Robbe Sirius - 1st RC Model Sailboat
My 1st RC yacht, a Robbe Sirius.. Looking a little worse for wear but she sails really well. I have installed a Battery Voltage monitor (green/red lights). The first model I saw sailing had to be recovered because the guy's receiver battery went flat!!

Guys.. Keep things in perspective here!!
1) Specs for Flaxby's ESC....
Model: A-SW090006
Continuous Current: 90A
Burst Current: 540A
LiPo Cells: 2-6S
BEC Type: Switch BEC
BEC Output: 5.5V/5A
Weight: 102g
Dimension: 57x49x18mm (excludes water pipe)
This is a serious ESC for his setup and it's rated 90A for 2 - 6s Lipo. I can't see how, this side of Christmas, running 5s lipo's would cause the thing to go do-lally! It's perfectly fine in this installation. The "Cutting power to the motor" is more likely to be 1 Fuse or holder going high resistance and screwing up the feedback for the ESC speed control!!
2) AS I commented above.. I do agree however the impedance imbalance of the 3 Motor phases with blade fuses installed, may make the speed regulation a bit 'iffy' for the poor thing. For this reason and for them being an unnecessary point of failure, they should be removed!

I am using an MFA Torpedo 800 surprisingly rated at just 38.7W; compared to your 870W brute, it's a mere flea!! But when you multiply the figures out it looks closer to 60W!!
I have considered the option of the MFA Torpedo 850 which at 150W output, has considerably more grunt!! I'll wait and see!

Hi Flaxby.. I would again question the need for the 3 blade fuses.. You are getting to the max rating of them at full throttle and should 1 pop leaving 2 of the 3 phases live, the motor and ESC will struggle to continue!!
In every Heli and Aero operation of Brushless Motors I know of, Fuses are not included!!
I was just curious on your motor RPM. I am in the process of a refit of a cruiser myself, (in my harbour) but have gone a different route using a big brushed motor and a 3 blade x 60mm Prop. I am driving the same on a pair of 3s x 3300mAh lipos in parallel and a 50A Mtronics Brushed ESC (No Trips/Fuses!). This setup gives me a max RPM of 5600 so it's to be seen what the performance will be like..

Flaxby, I am guessing you took the 3 Blade fuses out of the the 3 Motor phases?? and you are well within the capacity of the 40A Breaker!!
A Watt meter is a great investment to check out a model when you make any changes!!
Quick Question... What RPM do you have on at full throttle??

Flaxby.. You have done this all this pretty much by the book. As I commented before, I would replace the 3 blade fuses in the Motor Phases with links as they are an extra single point of failure and maybe a liability rather than a help. The 40A breaker on the Battery Positive will serve to protect the motor.
I say protect the motor, because the motor you have chosen is the weakest link on the propulsion chain (if in fact there is a weak link!) What you have there is an 850W motor, which at 5s will get really pissy if you exceed 42ish amps (850w/20v = 42.5 amp) The battery will give you virtually unlimited current and the ESC will pop at about 100A Peak so that leaves the motor at risk should you stall the Prop and give the throttle some welly! The 40amp breaker may protect you but I would go lower say 35amp (as they trip slowly) or even remove this if you don't want it to trip just because it feels like it and leave your vessel stranded somewhere. (BTW - 850W on a 1M scale boat is a LOT of push! - for more push get a bigger motor)
The above is all theoretical as there will be wiggle room in most of the components. On the big Electric Helis we have no trips or fuses. The biggest failing items are the batteries as they do work hard and get hot.. You can't water cool anything on a Heli!!
Just so you know where you are, to start (as is suggested elsewhere in this thread) you should invest a recording Watt Meter and you'll know exactly where you stand on the power consumption front.
As far as your battery care regime goes, you are over and above with your handling. Remember, never drop them and if you do, quarantine them out doors for a day or two to make sure they are OK. Last thing.. NEVER let the batteries get too hot to hold after a run. If they do, you need higher capacity battery, a smaller prop or LESS throttle!!!

Flaxby.. Still curious; protection against what??
The Internal resistance of a good Lipo is virtually zero, therefore the available current is almost infinite!! This is the value of the lipo/3phase (Brushless) motor.. The available torque is (as electric car drivers will qualify) colossal. Putting 25A fuses in line with each phase, could leave your model without motive power at the mere flick of the (throttle) wrist.. (5s lipo has a lot of grunt!!)
I would be inclined to leave out the 3 fuses if you do anything. Should you get 'high resistance' on one of the 3 motor phases, the ESC could blow it's brains trying to compensate for the unequal load!!! (this could be the 'odd' noise you heard under load)
If you are concerned about onboard fire, ensure you charge your Lipos' out of the model. Charging is their most vulnerable operating phase..... Other issues generally require you to puncture the lipo and short the internals..

I am curious.. Why do you have 3 fuses on the High Frequency (output) side of the ESC, when a better option surely is to have just one fuse on the DC (Input) side.
Another question.. Why do you have fuses at all?? After all, they will be the biggest single point of failure. What are you trying to protect??
(Edit).. I have just read through this whole thread again and all this seems to have been asked before, without answers. I do believe with fuses you are introducing solutions to problems you shouldn't ever have!
DG..
