Caltex Lumba Lumba
Ahoy friends! I found this pristine Sterling kit from Old Model Kits, and since it's a boat I have wanted to build since I was a lad, I knew I needed to get my grubby little hands on it! It is a thing of beauty, everything is still in bags, undisturbed since 1980 or thereabouts.

It's the old Sterling kit, light as a feather, sans plywood, but now that I have the hull glassed and looking great, I can say it was not too hard.
)EDITOR)
This is a colossal lie, one of the biggest ever told...let's face it, is was more sanding than anyone can imagine. This is the first kit he's built since 1975. So I can tell he is learning, sometimes he just turns to this AMAZING website, picks up some gigantic tip that he will use now, or on the next build, a Shelly Foss, it will go together that much quicker and smoother.
This hobby is truly too much fun!

I have inside knowledge.
This is her story, at least the parts that make me look good.

Re The Mutiny on the Bounty box art: Some of this film was made at Catalina Island, in a place called Fisherman's Harbor, or Fish Harbor as we called it when I worked at the island. In the seventies, you could still see the remnants of the ribs of the Bounty from where she rested on the edge of the cove.. It was part of the lore of the Isthmus, Western end of the island. The Isthmus is also where Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood used to spend weekends until she mysteriously drowned one night! John Davidson used to anchor his yacht, Principia, far out from shore. I used to captain/drive the Salad Bowl for one summer and he was very paranoid about my seamanship and small boat handling skills, but I left nary a mark, I got his 2 bits, and his garbage and he was a happy movie star, stogie clamped in his teeth! The island is famous for it's Hollywood links for sure!

Hi, jumpugly, I wanted to take a good snap of the state of the art of my CTLL. I will post more things now that you are building one. I am sure yours will turn out better than mine, and I am chuffed at how it came out, considering all things. I still am looking forward to running the measured mile, but I have all the internals set up, huge motors, nice batteries, it's all pretty skookum thanks to some help I got here on the site on batteries. Good luck, I look forward to seeing how she builds! I think it's such a beautiful model! One of the most interesting I have ever seen.

Hi everyone, I hope you all have a great holiday season!๐
I have done some detail work on the Lumba, still have a few things to polish and add, still haven't figured out what to do to put in the windows properly on the sides. I need a 3D printed bezel to make the line perfect...I want this as perfect as I can make it. If anyone knows someone who could print them for me, I would appreciate any ideas you folks might have.
I removed the lead-acid 12 volt battery and am using two 7.4 volt NiMH now, it is so amazing. The boat is balanced now and I can move it pick it up without throwing out my back again. This boat is going to fly, I will be very careful with it, as it is overpowered. You can tell she is much happier boat now, not ponderous and plowing like she did with the lead acid.
I will be posting images of her on the pond as soon as possible, side windows or not. I guess a router might do it for me on the windows, hmmmm...but I am looking for perfect edges. It is very important๐ค๐๐๐
Peace everyone, thanks for your time!

๐ Source for 3/32 reed accent strips
2 years ago by

Hello everyone! I hope good things are in store for you all, a new boat, a new love, something grand.
I have a question:
Does anyone have a source for very thin, 3/32 or thereabouts strips which in the Sterling CTLL kit were identified as "reed" strips, 3/32. They are perfect for edges and accents and they can take a bend without being steamed. If anyone knows a place that has this type of material I would really appreciate any info you can provide.
Thanks!๐๐ค๐๐

๐ Battery Placement

As per advice, I am trying this configuration first as it seems to have the best return from roll. I removed a lot of the material from the keel in a section, taking one rib out with it to get the battery CG as low as I could. I am happy wioth the result so far. I will make changes as needed.

Wow! That is so awesome, I appreciate all the items in your comment. I notice she has a tendency to roll, and her cute tumblehome does not help, so I am going to be trimming her out by keeping things as low as possible. I put the motors midships as far forward as I could and almost on the hull, I cut through 3 or 4 ribs. I didn't get the low angle I was looking for, but f there are any ride problems I will move things. I am working on the details trying to get the curves in the cabin, the rain channel that curves down. I want it to be so perfect, I am getting lost in every detail, but damn it's a blast. Once all the hard work is done, I don't feel the pressure of do-or-die things like the planking, I approach it with caution!

I have a question that I could use some advise on. If I use lock nuts on props, do I need to also use Locktite? The screws are part of a rather high powered system with 800 motors driving 1.5 inch props with dogs.
Thanks!

๐ Speedy Lumba!

I decided to over power her since she has so much displacement and rides so high she can really carry some cargo. Two 800 motors and nice props give her the speed I was looking for, and if I want to re-motor her, that is no problem. She rides perfectly draft wise, so I am chuffed with the sheer power I have in my hands, almost too much to even hold back. I am interested in how she will ride under power in the lake. I may have to trim a bit but I think it's a very positive development.

Thanks for the advice, I will get some asat, as Ricky from Trailer Park Boys used to say.
Your Chris in your thumbnail is great. I want to build one, and I am also always trying to find a good sized model of a 1970's Hatteras or a Chris Craft Constellation. I have never seen a good model or hull for a 1970's on Chris Craft. They are so awesome, the big ones from the seventies! They filled a slip, there was no space left. Big serious boats. Your model is superb, I want a big Chris like yours!

I am over here, and I don't want you to miss the Lumba, she just got paint, and I hope you will follow the blog, not sure how this works, I am not good at tech! Peace!
ere's the results of the second application of Total Boat resin or the well sanded first layer.
I tried Bondo, which helped with leveling and was easy to sand. I am always looking for something sand-able.
