I picked this up from the estate of a young man. As with most of my boats, it is sort of a "rescue". It is basically sound, but somebody before me cut all the wiring out of it.
It is equipped with all the lights the kit is supposed to have, as well as a bow thruster. I have started resoldering all the electrical connections, still working through what kind of wiring harnesses I will need to build for the various light circuits.
Some of the railings, etc. need rebuilding or re-attaching.
It should be a nice boat when finished.

USCG 44' Motor Lifeboat
A lady about 30 miles away is downsizing in preparation for a move to senior housing.
She told me her husband built this back in the late 60's when they were living in the San Francisco area.
She believes it was scratch-built, but I think it may have been (a very nice) kit. Does anybody have an opinion?
When he built it, he modeled it after one that was stationed in San Francisco at the time.
He passed away 15 years ago, and this boat has been sitting in its storage box in her garage ever since.
The batteries are labeled "good" and are dated 1991.
My first thought was to rip out all the vintage electronics and update it. But the more I think about it, it would be fun to see if these vintage parts can be resurrected. Thoughts?

I seriously need to stop looking at FB Marketplace ads ....
But this one was only miles away from me, has never been in the water, and if I didn't buy it he was going to give it to his grandson to play with.

I am told this boat has been a "Shelf Queen" all it's life.

47' USCG Lifeboat - Rebuild
I was "gifted" this USCG Lifeboat at our club's annual swap meet. As I was walking out with my new "prize" I was informed by one of the members, with more history in the club than I, That I should be aware that the hull "leaks". Upon inspection, there was indeed signs of water intrusion (aka mold!).
I decided that before I use it, or invest any time on cosmetic upgrades I should find and fix the leak. Here are some before pictures, and I will post progress pictures as I go.
As you can see, the hull was filled with spray foam insulation, which had to be removed before I could see any signs of leakage. Once I was down to the actual hull, I could identify seveal areas where I believe water could be coming in. I am trying my best to get back down to bare wood using picks scrapers and my Dremel.
At first I wasn't sure if it was a wood or plastic hull. However, as I dig in I have discovered that it is indeed a wood hull. That makes me believe that it is a Midwest Products 986 kit. My current plan is to expose problem areas, and coat the entire interior with 2 part epoxy.
This is my first "build log", so please be patient with me. Being a newby, If anybody has suggestions or comments as to how I should proceed I appreciate any advice ... but please be kind.

It's pretty easy to get at least one correct, when the exact same question is asked 2 days back to back, LOL
Since the answer was painfully obvious, I got it right BOTH times!!
Interesting that even before answering correctly, my score dropped 7 points. Answering correct twice did nothing to raise it.
EDIT: I just realized that the 30 day score and the running total score are both shown. I actually went UP to 100% for 30 day. I wonder how long that will last .....

๐ Paint layers

Be careful with lacquer. I am attaching a part of an article on this topic below, as it explains it better than I can:
(Bottom line, Lacquer can be "redisolved" by solvents from anything painted over it)
I'll add some input here. I'll kind of oversimplify but cover some basics. All finishes fall into one of two categories: Soluble or Insoluble. Soluble finishes dry by evaporation of the solvent that was used to make the paint thin enough to spray. Lacquers fall into this category.
The opposite of this is obviously the "insoluble" type of finish. Insoluble finishes are typically finishes that have been catalyzed with an isocyanate activator or hardener. The drying in this type of finish happens through a combination of evaporation of the solvent and a cross linking of the molecules. Once dry and fully cured they can no longer be redisolved and have very little ability to soak up a newly introduced solvent such as in a repaint. Enamels, Epoxies, and Urethanes are typical examples of insoluble finishes.
The problem with painting anything over a refinish lacquer (or soluble finish) is that they will forever absorb a solvent no matter how long ago it was painted. Whether it is the basemaker from a urethane paint, more lacquer paint or the solvents in a sealer, the soluble finish will soak up the solvent that is in whatever you are spraying on top of it. This causes the soluble paint to swell up as it absorbs the solvent. Problems may not show up initially but as these solvents once again evaporate back out, the soluble finish underneath the new repaint shrinks. Maybe a few months down the road, maybe a few weeks. You might see sandscratches, checking, crazing, etc.

๐ Could anybody help identify this boat?

This has popped up in an online marketplace. It is a relatively distant location from me.
The boat is described as being built approx. 30 yrs ago. It is 54" long with a 15" beam.
As you can see, it lacks a lot of detail (i.e. personality). But the general design and it's size intrigue me.
I've done a little looking, but have not spotted a match to this point.
If it can be identified, and details of how it "should" be finished, I might try to strike a deal for it.
Thanking you all in advance for any info yo might provide.

The Dec 5 question is totally subjective.
Any one person might use any one of those terms.
"Reckless Operation" is a more universally accepted term.
This is another question I simply cannot answer because it is a very ambiguous question, with the provided answers being personal dialect ... not official verbiage.

Do you have any "must see" suggestions for when we are in the general area?

๐ Boat storage case

Now that I have shown the examples of my much more talented club members designs, it's time to show my solution (maybe more in line with the OP's notion of "simple").
I have taken a wheeled Sports Equipment bag, lined with with a PVC frame, and I strap the boat on its base to the bottom of the PVC frame. The bag has wheels and an extendable handle for transport.
Not elegant, but it gets the job done. It has the added benefit of exterior zippered pockets to hold batteries, etc.

This is not mine, but it belongs to a fellow club member.
He has done a beautiful job creating this case.
He has used piano hinges, and has 3D printed the cradles that hold the boat secure.
This is beyond my skillset, but should give you an idea of how a well built carry case is done.

We are on a road trip that included attending the massive Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, and spending time with our daughter before she has her first child (next week??).
While in Albuquerque, I checked for model boat clubs, and discovered that the city has built a model boat pond for enthusiasts to use. We stopped by and checked it out on our way out of town. There were no boats on the water, but it looks like a great facility.
I snapped a few pictures to share.
