13" and 6" Rubber Duckies
I always wanted a fun "boat" to entertain kids during our events. I started with the 13" Duckie, and in the process ran into 6" ducks and decided "what the heck, why not".
Note: The thrusters use "Tank Steering" which works well for this. However, the setup on the 13" duck is WAY oversized! I have the transmitter set to 10% power, or Duckie does backflips when you add power.
The motors and electronics for 6" Duckie came out of a cheap Amazon toy boat. A friend 3D printed the housing to accept the components.

I picked this up from the estate of a young man. As with most of my boats, it is sort of a "rescue". It is basically sound, but somebody before me cut all the wiring out of it.
It is equipped with all the lights the kit is supposed to have, as well as a bow thruster. I have started resoldering all the electrical connections, still working through what kind of wiring harnesses I will need to build for the various light circuits.
Some of the railings, etc. need rebuilding or re-attaching.
It should be a nice boat when finished.

USCG 44' Motor Lifeboat
A lady about 30 miles away is downsizing in preparation for a move to senior housing.
She told me her husband built this back in the late 60's when they were living in the San Francisco area.
She believes it was scratch-built, but I think it may have been (a very nice) kit. Does anybody have an opinion?
When he built it, he modeled it after one that was stationed in San Francisco at the time.
He passed away 15 years ago, and this boat has been sitting in its storage box in her garage ever since.
The batteries are labeled "good" and are dated 1991.
My first thought was to rip out all the vintage electronics and update it. But the more I think about it, it would be fun to see if these vintage parts can be resurrected. Thoughts?

47' USCG Lifeboat - Rebuild
I was "gifted" this USCG Lifeboat at our club's annual swap meet. As I was walking out with my new "prize" I was informed by one of the members, with more history in the club than I, That I should be aware that the hull "leaks". Upon inspection, there was indeed signs of water intrusion (aka mold!).
I decided that before I use it, or invest any time on cosmetic upgrades I should find and fix the leak. Here are some before pictures, and I will post progress pictures as I go.
As you can see, the hull was filled with spray foam insulation, which had to be removed before I could see any signs of leakage. Once I was down to the actual hull, I could identify seveal areas where I believe water could be coming in. I am trying my best to get back down to bare wood using picks scrapers and my Dremel.
At first I wasn't sure if it was a wood or plastic hull. However, as I dig in I have discovered that it is indeed a wood hull. That makes me believe that it is a Midwest Products 986 kit. My current plan is to expose problem areas, and coat the entire interior with 2 part epoxy.
This is my first "build log", so please be patient with me. Being a newby, If anybody has suggestions or comments as to how I should proceed I appreciate any advice ... but please be kind.

Whatever the fix for the QOD was musta had a positive effect on the rest of the site.
Or, maybe, it was a simple matter that the system was longing for a reboot?
Whatever the process was, Thank You!!

Razor,
Congratulations on your early diagnosis and successful treatment!
I started getting the "manual" inspection at age 50 during my annual physical.
In 2117, at age 66, my doctor felt something worth investigating.
My PSA was elevated, and a biopsy was done.
The local health care "professionals" recommended some rather radical treatments.
Lucky for me, I live about 2 hours from the Mayo Clinic (arguably the best health care facility in the world!).
I got a referral, and was seen by one of their top cancer Dr.'s.
I underwent chemo and high dose Proton Beam radiation treatment.
To this day, I am cancer free.
I cannot stress strongly enough that any male over 50 years of age should be getting annual prostate exams. Mine saved my life!!!

We have several of those ProBoat Horizon Harbor Tugs in our Club.
They work pretty well.
One member has re-engineered and 3D printed a new attachment piece for the nose, to raise the Retrieval Arms a little higher out of the water. He has also upgraded the motor to a 775 which gave it a nice power boost.

Alessandro,
I don't really know how to answer which of the two choices is best for you, as I have no personal experience with either of those.
As I said, I do own tools from both companies, and have had good experience with both.
The Dremel feature of being detachable appeals to me. Although, as others have said, I don't know how often one would need that.
In my own shop, I have a larger, more commercial-grade Hegner Brand scroll saw of German manufacture.
They are quite expensive, but I got very lucky and found one used in a Pawn Shop at a reasonable price.
For my hobby use I would never have paid the price for a new one. But when I spotted this one used for a fraction of the new price, I had to scoop it up!
I am happy with it, overall. However, I wish it had provisions for a fence. I find I need to make jigs to guide the material if I want clean, straight cuts.
I don't have any really good pictures of it, but I am attaching what I do have. Maybe this will give you some inspiration .....

I have both Proxxon and Dremel tools.
Both are decently manufactured.
I looked at the Dremel website, and I see it has a "Detachable Coping Function", which I can see coming in handy at times.
I don't think you can go too far wrong with either saw.

๐ Wanted 540 Outboard motor
13 days ago by
๐บ๐ธ DWBrinkman (

Chris,
I just threw it out there as an option.
I know the person who makes them. I know that he has put a lot into the design and testing.
It has a solid shaft drive with metal gears and bearings in the lower unit. It is designed with an easy access cover to service the lower unit. It comes with 20+ props, so you can match the motor to your boat needs.
It is not inexpensive, but it is an option.
As I've said, I know numerous individuals who are running this motor, and have no problems.
He designed this motor to go with the 3D pontoons he makes. He has been selling RC snowblowers for years.
It's not for everybody, but may be right for somebody.

Scott,
One of our local club members has designed and is offering a 3D printed outboard.
There are several club members running these, and they are quite happy with them.
It is designed with steering servo and trim/tilt servo built in, so all it needs is an external ESC.
I'm not sure if this is close to what you are looking for or not, but I thought I'd throw it out as an option.

Thanks for all the insights.
I understand that the transom could be modified.
But, as Chris said, changing the transom and mounting an outboard would definitely change the character of the skiff.
It was a passing thought, but probably not a very good one .... ๐
After giving it some consideration, I think the Skiff will remain a shelf queen.
Someday, I will find a boat more suitable for hanging an outboard on.

Ron,
Here are some more details about the Skiff.
It is 30.5" long, and almost 10" Beam at the widest part. The transome height is a little over 4".
I have had delusions of mounting an outboard on her at times.
I have a Kyosho/Jackson 540 and a Graupner 600, both looking for homes. However, as you can see, the shafts on both motors are too short to work on this boat.
So, for now, she is a shelf queen. At least I have rescued her from being subjected to cooking grease ๐คฃ.

Chum,
Here are a couple of pictures.
I got 3 boats from a person on FB Marketplace, all 3 for $5.00.
One of them is a static Row Boat Skiff, another was a KNK Jupiter M401, and the third was the Corvette.
All of them had been sitting on top of kitchen cabinets over the cook stove. The Corvette suffered the worst damage because it would not fit the space above the kitchen cabinet with the windshield intact.
All of them had a very thick layer of dust-infused cooking grease as a result of years of exposure to kitchen fumes.
I spent countless hours cleaning all three boats. The Jupiter and Corvette were built as display models, and as such had no motors or electronics. The Corvette was in the worst shape. The Jupiter and Corvette are now both fully functioning RC Boats.

I've posted a number of "nature" pictures, but I don't believe I've posted any of our dog.
This is Hudson, a 10 year old Morkie.
This past October we inherited him from our daughter.
She has a very demanding job, and also a 1 year old child. Her relatively new husband came with a large rambunctious dog as well.
She was struggling to keep up, so we volunteered to take Hudson and give him the life he deserves.
We had "dogsat" him many times over the years, so coming to live with us was not stressful for him.
He is now the master of the house ....
