I picked this up from the estate of a young man. As with most of my boats, it is sort of a "rescue". It is basically sound, but somebody before me cut all the wiring out of it.
It is equipped with all the lights the kit is supposed to have, as well as a bow thruster. I have started resoldering all the electrical connections, still working through what kind of wiring harnesses I will need to build for the various light circuits.
Some of the railings, etc. need rebuilding or re-attaching.
It should be a nice boat when finished.

USCG 44' Motor Lifeboat
A lady about 30 miles away is downsizing in preparation for a move to senior housing.
She told me her husband built this back in the late 60's when they were living in the San Francisco area.
She believes it was scratch-built, but I think it may have been (a very nice) kit. Does anybody have an opinion?
When he built it, he modeled it after one that was stationed in San Francisco at the time.
He passed away 15 years ago, and this boat has been sitting in its storage box in her garage ever since.
The batteries are labeled "good" and are dated 1991.
My first thought was to rip out all the vintage electronics and update it. But the more I think about it, it would be fun to see if these vintage parts can be resurrected. Thoughts?

But this one was only miles away from me, has never been in the water, and if I didn't buy it he was going to give it to his grandson to play with.

47' USCG Lifeboat - Rebuild
I was "gifted" this USCG Lifeboat at our club's annual swap meet. As I was walking out with my new "prize" I was informed by one of the members, with more history in the club than I, That I should be aware that the hull "leaks". Upon inspection, there was indeed signs of water intrusion (aka mold!).
I decided that before I use it, or invest any time on cosmetic upgrades I should find and fix the leak. Here are some before pictures, and I will post progress pictures as I go.
As you can see, the hull was filled with spray foam insulation, which had to be removed before I could see any signs of leakage. Once I was down to the actual hull, I could identify seveal areas where I believe water could be coming in. I am trying my best to get back down to bare wood using picks scrapers and my Dremel.
At first I wasn't sure if it was a wood or plastic hull. However, as I dig in I have discovered that it is indeed a wood hull. That makes me believe that it is a Midwest Products 986 kit. My current plan is to expose problem areas, and coat the entire interior with 2 part epoxy.
This is my first "build log", so please be patient with me. Being a newby, If anybody has suggestions or comments as to how I should proceed I appreciate any advice ... but please be kind.

According to the National Centers for Environmental Information (and others):
Magnetic declination (sometimes called magnetic variation) is the angle between magnetic north and true north. Declination is positive when this angle is east of true north and negative when it is west. Magnetic declination changes over time, and with location. Declination value is needed to determine true north, because compasses point toward magnetic north.
Whereas:
The term for the angle between the magnetic north and the direction of a ship's course is called "magnetic course"; the difference between the magnetic north and the ship's course is considered the "magnetic deviation" which is caused by the ship's own magnetic field affecting the compass reading.
AI is wrong again, which drives my score even lower .... sigh

Alessandro,
"White Metal" is sort of a generic term for:
"A metal alloy that may include antimony, tin, lead, cadmium, bismuth, and zinc (some of which are quite toxic). Not all of these metals are found in all white metal alloys. Metals are mixed to achieve a desired goal or need."
Another common name for it is "Pot Metal":
"Pot metal is typically made from a combination of common, less precious metals like zinc, lead, copper, tin, aluminum, magnesium, iron, and cadmium; essentially, a mix of scrap metals melted together in a "pot" which gives it its name, making it a relatively inexpensive alloy with a low melting point, often used for casting parts due to its ease of molding"
It is not common for white metal to contain (much) lead in recent years. Even our (US) wheel weights, shotgun shot, and fishing lures no longer contain lead.
Hope that helps,
Dave B

The answer to the 9/11 question is "none of the above".
The Kyrenia sank around 400BC and was discovered in 1965.
The Mary Rose was discovered in 1971 and raised in 1982
Since no answers were correct, I chose not to answer.
I'm sure this is a recycled question.

As Simplesailor's chart shows, the only answer that is remotely correct is "Running".
The AI answer "Close Reach" is the most far from correct of the choices as it is by definition sailing into the wind.
My gut told me this was another of those questions left unanswered because Broad Reach was not a choice. So picking whatever choice AI thinks is the answer was a shot in the dark.
Running was my pick, because all sailing downwind is essentially some form of "Running" with the wind.
Frustrating .....

There is "almost" enough there to make patterns from.
Then remake ALL the pieces, and complete the "re"construction.
There is a wooden boat reconstruction business about 25 miles from me.
I know the owner, and he told me that in the majority of cases the boats brought in for reconstruction are used for exactly that .... patterns.

Re: Aug 22 question.
I have been there!
And, in fact have canoed on Lake Louise.
I agree with Ed that it has little to do with our hobby.
Having said that, it is possibly the most beautiful place in nature I have ever been.
Yes, Nick, you do need a lake to sail a boat. But this one is glacier fed, and mighty cold.
There is no swimming out on rescue missions here.

Redpop,
Sorry to hear about your bad experience.
I am actually surprised at your experience with them.
I have ordered bits and pieces from them, and always had superior service.
I have to admit, I am in the United States. Wondering if the international shipping thing is a factor.
My wife and I actually stopped at their facility Feb 4th of this year when we were passing through Tucson. They were very cordial and let us roam pretty freely.
I hope you have better luck with them going forward.

Dumas still sells that kit. I have found them to be very accommodating if you need parts and pieces to restore one of their boats. I suspect this to be especially true, considering they still sell the complete kit.
Here is the description from their website:
Description
We at Dumas are pleased to be able to take you back to an era of elegance. In 1946 Sparkman and Stevens designed a 66 ft. commuter boat for the express purpose of carrying commuters down the Hudson River into New York. What a glorious way to beat the traffic. These commuters were used by their owners as everyday transportation to and from work, and for pleasure trips to their favorite spots. The most famous of these commuters was the Dauntless. The Dauntless was owned by a prominent New York family. They undoubtedly considered the Dauntless a great diversion from their day to day business dealings. The days of the Dauntless are gone but you can bring them back. The Dauntless features top quality construction materials. The kit is made almost entirely of 1/8 in. poplar plywood. All parts are cleanly die-cut, and we have included a variety of detail parts including 38 cast metal fittings. The size of the Dauntless leaves the door wide open for different powering methods. The obvious choices would be scale electric power, high speed electric power, or twin gas power, but you may have your own ideas. Use running hardware kit #2341 for all twin screw, twin power methods in the Dauntless.
Length 49-1/2 inches Beam 14 inches Scale 3/4 in. to 1 ft.
*Additional parts required for R/C:
Running Hardware: #2341 For all twin screw applications
Power: Two Dumas #2004 6v motors
Speed Control: #8314 Speed Control
Battery: #8302 NiCad Battery
Charger: #8315 Battery Charger
Radio Control: #8812-2 2 Channel Radio Control w/ two servos

Also, these posts that are reliant on having lived in a country or region are not fair.
How would somebody in the US be familiar with a BBC TV series?
It seems like I am finding I simply need to skip answering a lot of questions either because the correct answer is not one of the choices, or because there is no way I could know the answer because it is locality specific.
Stepping down from my soapbox now ....

Since I knew "none of the above" was the correct answer, but not offered ...

That strategy kept my average at 100% (I wasn't sure if "no answer" would be counted as a wrong answer, but figured I had nothing to lose).

No choices for the July 12th question are correct. Mary Rose was found in 1971, Vasa was found in 1961, Whydah was found in 1984, and for the record the Titanic was found in 1985.
The Sao Jose Paquete was the first documented slave ship, the White Lion was the first to bring slaves to the US.
Unless the question is a strangely worded trick question, my vote is none of the above.
(Yes, these details are from a Google search. Because I knew none of them were correct, but wanted to verify my thoughts).
