USCG 44' Motor Lifeboat
A lady about 30 miles away is downsizing in preparation for a move to senior housing.
She told me her husband built this back in the late 60's when they were living in the San Francisco area.
She believes it was scratch-built, but I think it may have been (a very nice) kit. Does anybody have an opinion?
When he built it, he modeled it after one that was stationed in San Francisco at the time.
He passed away 15 years ago, and this boat has been sitting in its storage box in her garage ever since.
The batteries are labeled "good" and are dated 1991.
My first thought was to rip out all the vintage electronics and update it. But the more I think about it, it would be fun to see if these vintage parts can be resurrected. Thoughts?

I seriously need to stop looking at FB Marketplace ads ....
But this one was only miles away from me, has never been in the water, and if I didn't buy it he was going to give it to his grandson to play with.

I am told this boat has been a "Shelf Queen" all it's life.
i.e. Never been in the water.
It was a long drive to get it, but I'm happy to have it.
It needs a good cleaning, but looks to be mostly in good shape.

47' USCG Lifeboat - Rebuild
I was "gifted" this USCG Lifeboat at our club's annual swap meet. As I was walking out with my new "prize" I was informed by one of the members, with more history in the club than I, That I should be aware that the hull "leaks". Upon inspection, there was indeed signs of water intrusion (aka mold!).
I decided that before I use it, or invest any time on cosmetic upgrades I should find and fix the leak. Here are some before pictures, and I will post progress pictures as I go.
As you can see, the hull was filled with spray foam insulation, which had to be removed before I could see any signs of leakage. Once I was down to the actual hull, I could identify seveal areas where I believe water could be coming in. I am trying my best to get back down to bare wood using picks scrapers and my Dremel.
At first I wasn't sure if it was a wood or plastic hull. However, as I dig in I have discovered that it is indeed a wood hull. That makes me believe that it is a Midwest Products 986 kit. My current plan is to expose problem areas, and coat the entire interior with 2 part epoxy.
This is my first "build log", so please be patient with me. Being a newby, If anybody has suggestions or comments as to how I should proceed I appreciate any advice ... but please be kind.

Doug,
Sorry for interrupting, I'm sure the component you referenced is a great product.
But ...
Your comment "But if you want good solid reliable British engineering" made me chuckle.
I have been an auto enthusiast for many years, and this quote pretty much reflects my gut reaction to British electronics ... "Lucas - earned a reputation as the โPrince of Darknessโ in not only Jaguars but in all manner of vehicles produced in Great Britain. Rovers, MGโs, Triumphsโฆ anything that had Lucas in them.. Austinโs you name it if it had Lucas Electrics in it.. you would be most fortunate if the switch you flicked on - actually worked.."
I am aware that times change, and you were making reference to entirely different components. It just struck me as funny, and I thought I'd share my reaction.
Now, "Back to regular programming".

๐ Fundraising for clubs
17 days ago by
๐บ๐ธ DWBrinkman (

Rudy,
Our club is primarily funded by Membership Dues. The dues are $40.00/yr for a "Family" membership (i.e. domestic couple). Our club has an average annual paying membership of approx. 50 paying members. With the exception of the club funded Spring breakfast, and Fall "Dry Dock" meal, we have never turned away somebody from events for non-payment of dues.
We also have had boats and gear donated to the club, mostly from the estates of deceased members but sometimes from people who have simply heard of us. These donations are sold to club members at several events per year, and the funds go into our treasury.
As mentioned, club funds are used for the Spring breakfast meeting, and the Dry Dock year end party. We also use the funds for equipment such as an LCD projector, a tent canopy which is used when we have displays at non club events, funding the club website, and this year to buy and build 2 vac-u-tugs which we intend to make available for youth to use during club events.
We are fortunate to have a good relationship with the City of Edina who let us use a storage cage in the city's park maintenance garage, as well as use of a room for meetings, and also the use of the Hughes Pavilion at the park ponds for our 4 major events each year.
We do have a Commodore, and board members, monthly meetings (the last two had 21 & 29 persons in attendance) where we briefly discuss club business and then open the meeting up to anybody who wants to show a boat or project they are working on, or ask for advice from more seasoned modelers. This part of the meeting has also had members give presentations on battery types and care, soldering techniques, planking process, etc.
Although we are structured to the point that we have a Commodore and board members, monthly scheduled meetings, and events we display at ... It is a pretty laid back club.
I hope this gives you some ideas for your club.

I have attached last months newsletter, and the 2024 Calendar of Events .pdfs

Nice pictures! That cruise IS on my "Bucket List".
I'm sure we are all familiar with the acronym B.O.A.T - Break Out Another Thousand.
The Averilla might have "potential", but I'm thinking if somebody attempted it the acronym would need to be changed to B.O.A.T.T. - Break Out Another Ten Thousand or maybe B.O.A.H.T (Hundred).
It would be a beautiful boat if done right, though.

Great video, thanks for sharing. And, yes, that is a LOT of boats!!
Even 75 boats this past year is an impressive number.
It looks like an awesome pond to run in.
Our club has a nice venue, but ultimately it is a storm water runoff-fed pond. So no gradual beach and certainly no wading to set up the boats, that would be nice.

I am not familiar with the brands of ESC and Receiver you are using, so this is an "educated guess answer"
1) have you bound the receiver to your transmitter? That is necessary for them to communicate.
2) from the picture, it appears you have the ESC in channel 3 and the steering servo in channel 4. On all the receivers I use, channel 1 is steering and channel 2 is throttle (ESC).
3) I cannot see from the pictures, but be sure the JST plugs going into the receiver have the black (ground) wires towards the proper terminal (on mine, it is the pin towards the outside edge).
Hopefully one or more of these helps.
