USCG 44' Motor Lifeboat
A lady about 30 miles away is downsizing in preparation for a move to senior housing.
She told me her husband built this back in the late 60's when they were living in the San Francisco area.
She believes it was scratch-built, but I think it may have been (a very nice) kit. Does anybody have an opinion?
When he built it, he modeled it after one that was stationed in San Francisco at the time.
He passed away 15 years ago, and this boat has been sitting in its storage box in her garage ever since.
The batteries are labeled "good" and are dated 1991.
My first thought was to rip out all the vintage electronics and update it. But the more I think about it, it would be fun to see if these vintage parts can be resurrected. Thoughts?

But this one was only miles away from me, has never been in the water, and if I didn't buy it he was going to give it to his grandson to play with.
I couldn't say no.

I am told this boat has been a "Shelf Queen" all it's life.
i.e. Never been in the water.
It was a long drive to get it, but I'm happy to have it.
It needs a good cleaning, but looks to be mostly in good shape.

47' USCG Lifeboat - Rebuild
I was "gifted" this USCG Lifeboat at our club's annual swap meet. As I was walking out with my new "prize" I was informed by one of the members, with more history in the club than I, That I should be aware that the hull "leaks". Upon inspection, there was indeed signs of water intrusion (aka mold!).
I decided that before I use it, or invest any time on cosmetic upgrades I should find and fix the leak. Here are some before pictures, and I will post progress pictures as I go.
As you can see, the hull was filled with spray foam insulation, which had to be removed before I could see any signs of leakage. Once I was down to the actual hull, I could identify seveal areas where I believe water could be coming in. I am trying my best to get back down to bare wood using picks scrapers and my Dremel.
At first I wasn't sure if it was a wood or plastic hull. However, as I dig in I have discovered that it is indeed a wood hull. That makes me believe that it is a Midwest Products 986 kit. My current plan is to expose problem areas, and coat the entire interior with 2 part epoxy.
This is my first "build log", so please be patient with me. Being a newby, If anybody has suggestions or comments as to how I should proceed I appreciate any advice ... but please be kind.

π Are Motorized RC Scale Model Boats Hazardous?
4 days ago by
πΊπΈ DWBrinkman (

Lew,
Our club works closely with the park management regarding the usage of the pond.
Last year we did have a couple incidents where a fast electric boat struck and damaged and/or sank one of our scale boats.
We decided to be proactive and approached the park manager to establish rules for pond use.
The park management while they liked the idea, didn't want to take on added responsibility for policing or enforcing park rules.
We came up with the following rules, the park had this sandwich board sign made (at our club's expense), and we have access to it in the park maintenance building whenever we are using the pond.
We kept the rules as simple as possible, and agreed to help remind other users of the rules.
So far, this co-relationship with the city park management has worked well.
Wishing you the best of luck in your efforts.

π Question of the Day?

Nick,
I believe the reason it is the Langley is because it was the first ship that a plane took off AND landed on.
Previous ships allowed a seaplane to take off, but the plane had to land in the ocean and be fished out.
At least that is how I understood the question.
I can understand how "recover" could be interpreted to include snatching them from a sea landing.

My friend who ended up with this boat decided to part with it.
He gave me the first shot at it ....
It is unique, and I already have 2 USCG boats so thought this would make a nice addition.
And, yes, this boat initially came from the same collection as the others I posted recently.
Members here have identified it as a 30' USCG Surf Rescue Boat, and I agree.
I have asked previously, but now that it's mine, I'm asking again. Does anybody know if this was a kit, and by who?
It does not look scratch built.
Thanks Again,

Obatzda sounds wonderful!! 2 parts cheese, 1 part butter, add beer! Garnished with onions, garlic, horseradish, cloves topped with cream cheese .... sounds like heaven (or a recipe for heart attack, LOL).
I'd love to try it some time.
RC boating, with beer and Obatzda sounds like a wonderful way to enjoy retirement
