I built a model of the Empress of Britain with my Dad when I was about 9 or 10, sadly gave it away to a scout group (I think).
My Grandad also sailed on the Empress of Canada out of Liverpool and both Dad and Grandad were on the Empress of Asia when it was sunk by the Japs in 1941 (They ended up in Changi).
So a bit of a family connection with Canadian Pacific Line!!!!

Hi
Just following the plans which show the frames to be attached to the keel first and then the well sides added. The chine etc will be added later. The well sides(provided by Sarik ) are clearly longer than the gap between the last two frames and I am reluctant to start cutting them up if I have made a basic error in the construction so far๐ค๐ค๐ค

Hi All
Just purchased the wood kit from Sarik for the above and have all the main bulwarks in place. However I cannot seem to fit the well sides also anyone any idea about the covering for the motor as the pieces provided seem to be to big! Do I need to trim them???

Thanks for that.
The plan seems to indicate that the hull should be planked. If I were to use ply sheets instead what thickness would you suggest??

I have just purchased from Starik Hobbies the Fairey Huntsman short kit for the 42" model and whilst it contains most of the main parts to assemble the hull it does not contain a transom..
Can anybody enlighten me on how to build and attach a transom????
Many Thanks๐ค

Hi
The current plan has timber sizes shown as 3/16in,5/16, 1/4in, etc so presumably when the plan is enlarged I would need timber double the size. Also the planking is shown as 3/32 x 3/8 spruce again presumably I would need to double this size??

๐ Building a Tug

I have built numerous boats over the years ranging from the small 'White Star' kit to plank on frame USS Missouri, MV Velarde, MTB's, Empress of Britain (bread and butter construction) a large scale Rea Tug Hazelgarth (GF gull and superstructure)and Royal Navy ships using Fleetscale hulls etc. Sadly all this came to an end a few years ago and all the boats were either given away, sold or sent to the tip!!
I now want to try again and was just wondering if the Mobile Marine way was good. It does seem to be a relatively easy and stress free way to complete a model!!!!

I remember going to a model boat club meet in Crosby Liverpool back in the early 60's ( cannot remember the name of the lake though) There were plenty of IC models plus one guy who had a steam powered trawler and he was busy stoking the thing with pine chips to get steam up. As I remember a beautiful boat. Maybe the way forward is steam????

Couldn't agree more. My first boat build by my dad and I in the late 50' also had an I.C engine. I think it was a Frog 3.5??
Anyway it was great fun and now such a pity these motors are being banned
