This appears to be the Billings kit of the Calypso. I have recently had the MM2384 plan Navy Yard Minesweeper blown up to 150% with the intention of starting a build and conversion to the Calypso. A long term project of my favourite vessel. ๐๐

๐ 3D Printed Models

On a personal note, I use the mixed modelling approach. I find it difficult to see how the modeller with an average workshop space and budget could make the complete variety of parts needed for a complex and detailed model without 3D printer involvement.
I still applaud the modeller using bottle tops, wooden coffee stirrers, and things found on the beach to come up with fantastic models. One thing I think is important though is that youngsters, who are taught the skills for CAD and 3D printing in schools now, get to use those skills in a way we can appreciate. If we want our hobby to continue, then we need to embrace the new techniques and materials that allow it to progress, especially for those younger modellers, and hope that they too see the advantages of "mixed modelling" before creating the masterpieces of traditional building, themselves. After all, most modellers now will include simple plastic parts bought at the shop, whereas our grandfathers would only ever know how to make a boat from old cupboard panels, etc.
Just my thoughts, but you continue with your own build excellence, however you do it. ๐๐

Hi SimpleSailor,
Have you thought about raising the centre of the hull bottom, leaving a side wall. This would maintain the looks and mobility characteristics. You would, of course, have to vent the section to allow air out, and importantly, to prevent suction when removing from the water.
Just a thought!

You could use BECC vinyl numbers in the UK. Available from many model outlets.

Nice model. Obviously armed, but of noticable relatively shallow draft for the size. Is she actually a "Q" boat?

๐ 3D printer choice?

LewZ, I used "Molotow liquid Chrome", but also have "Green Stuff World, Chrome Metal". They are Alcohol based, so the pigment lays flat as it dries. Easy to use, but not tolerant of any alcohol based cleaner or of added lacquers, where it lifts the pigment and turns to normal silver paint effect.

I would also say that I use AutoCad Fusion 360 for fittings design, and Blend3r and meshmixer for figures. All of which have their free versions.

๐ 3D printer choice?

Hi Steve,
The choice of manufacturer is down to you, and I expect that you will hear of several good budget printers here.
I've found that resin printers match my requirements for fittings, because of the detail required. They do have an odour that means they may not be suited for in the home. They also need a little more clean-up and a separate curing machine.
My choice on budget system is the Elegoo Mars series. Anycubic also do a matching system. Both excellent.
There is a learning curve, but I'm not a young man and it's not too steep. There are plenty of helpful Youtubes, etc.
What ever you decide on, Best wishes.๐

Try giving SLEC a call. They are really helpful. If not, come back to me and I'll see if I can CAD an stl for you to print. It may take a couple of weeks though.

I was always taught that, if you roll your hand into a fist, with your thumb straight out, your fingers point in the direction of rotation and your thumb is the direction of movement. Thus RH works with the right hand and LH works with the left hand.

Very similar to the Schilling rudder idea, which improved low rev manoeuvrability.

Are they what we used to call "Lash barges"? If so, I didn't know they were still in use.
