Aeronaut Jonny
Hi all, I started a new build during Christmas and I'm just about ready to start painting the haul so I figured its a good time to get the build log going.
I've had this kit for about a year now, purchased from Bauer in Germany along with with the recommended equipment including their Schottel Drive system. The plan is to have the two Schottel drives, a bow thruster, one working Anchor (possibly two in the future of off the same winch), a sound system, two working radars, working spot light with pivot in pitch and yaw, always on nav lights and interior lights, RC working main winch and manually operated bow and side winches, tow separate working fire monitors able to rotate individually, possibly a smoke generator and final an auto bilge system This comes to a total of 18 RC, unfortunately I only have 16 available so we will have to see what ends up in the ship.
So far I have the drives and bow thruster all fit and ready for assembly. I then built up the frame work and made the holes for the fire pumps and bilge. then had to build the lower deck house so I could fit the deck in the right place on the ship. Once the deck was dry fit I cut the scuppers then glued the deck down. I then set to work making the deck splash proof by installing and extending the kits coaming. I also add a drop floor under the aft hatch that I'm hoping will allow me to keep the water that gets on the deck from leaking down into the haul. Now I've got the Bulwark stanchions and handrails just about complete. I also started work on some of the deck items as I need the locations to work out some of the modifications I'm working through.
I hope to start painting the haul soon, I'm going to try brush painting this ship as I was able to find some nice paints at an Art supply store and I don't have much access to a place to spray paint in the winter. I do think I will spray on the primer first and hope it helps absorbed some of the brush marks.

E.F.S. Surveyor
After sitting on the shelf for about a year I decided to start my build of the E.F.S. Surveyor kit by Deans Marine. She is a 1/20 scale representation of a fisheries research vessel, measuring 780mm in length with a beam of 250mm, she's wide and should be pretty stable on the water.
First step was to trim the hull and apply a layer of Bondo putty to smooth out the fibreglass that will be above the deck. Next the twin stuffing tubes needed to be carefully aligned and again Bondo, the a layer of fibreglass on top for added strength. Once all that was satisfactory I cut out the freeing ports, then installed the deck supports and motor mounts. Then it was time to install the rudder shafts and I ran into my fist problem, the brass tubes for the rudders supplied were the wrong size, about .04โ to big, fortunately I had some scrap tube that was a perfect snug fit. With a bit of grease I should be able to keep the water out, next I noted that the kit did not include a way to support the tubes but did indicate I could solder a scale a brass to the tube and epoxy it to the hull. I elected to cut up blocks of wood to insert the tubes through and epoxy them in place, before carefully drilling my holes for the tubes. After this was completed I installed the two skegs adding an extra sheet of plastic to make them each three sheets about 5mm wide and again used Bondo to take up the gapes created by a badly designed cutouts. Last I installed the bow thruster and bondo and sanded it all smooth. After a quick leak check in the tub I will fibreglass the hull along ware the skeg pins are located and cove the interior part of the bow thruster in marine sealant. That is it for this week, cheers

M.V. Dante
Hi All, just thought I'd share a few picks of my current build. The kit is the M.V. Dante by Deans Marine. The kit is a representation of a fire/rescue boat serving the Euro-Holland port. Interesting first for me is using the guts of two standard servos as the motors for the props.

I Have 3 Deans Kits, I've built 2 of them. The kits contain a good assortment of white metal molded fittings, plastic molded fittings, formed hulls, and wooden parts. I found they use the same molds across different scales. IE the same RIB boat used on a 100 scale boat and a 72 scale boat. I found most of the plastic molds to be full of bubbles, very brittle and very sticky. The kits I had required much part replacement and manufacturing. The scale 1/1 scale drawings are very nice to have but have some inaccuracies in them. the kits have the usual water decals and stickers that look to be printed from a standard laser printer. In one of my kits the decal sheet was printed on what looked like card stock instead of the normal water decals or stickers and were unusable. I replaced the props on the bigger boat with brass but used the rest of the drive components supplied.
However once completed the kits make for very nice looking boats that sail great and look scale. I built the Dante and the Surveyor and then needed a break from Deans, lol. I have the Bulldog yet to be started.

Hi Rockbag, I have started using acrylic paints from my local hobby store something like this, it has tested well in the water so far but needs to be thinned with water before use.

Here is a pic of the boat under construction, it is a fictional model, no real world counter part that I know of. I have 20 or 30 tires I can use around the boat, I was thinking of using rope or chain to attach them but I want to avoid drilling holes in the side. Any pics of members models would be great

Hi Isaac
I'm using a FrSky system its a bit pricy but I use it for my helicopters and planes. I can combine two 8 CH RXs to get 16CH and redundancy so if one fails the other will take over. my setup is and X10S radio and two RX8R Pro receivers. I think you can get up to 24 channels with their newest systems.
As for the drive system I'm using the recommended setup from Bauer Models, see link below. the plan is to use two forward only running ESC and Two 360 deg servos. Through mixing on my radio I will get forward speed above mid point on my throttle stick and when below mid I plan to have the 2 Schottel drives rotate 180 Deg in opposite directions and apply throttle to the motors thus driving the boat backward I will have to use a V curve in my throttle set up, and I will have to program a Mix into my steering channel that will allow this and still provide left and right steering capability. In theory it should be possible, but if not I will have to get ESC with forward and reverse functions and limit the steering to 90 deg left and right.

OK I've had this boat for almost 10 years a thought maybe its less then 2000mm so I did a bit of research, she out of production now but this is what I found on a thread at RC groups
It's one meter long, about 39.4".
RC Ocean Going Racing Yacht 2.2m
Spec.
Length : 1000mm
Height : 2200mm
Weight : 3565g
Area of Sails : 0.52m2
Ballast weight: 1.3kg
Water depth: 50cm+
And to Answer RodC
I can get the boat in my SUV with the seats down and the mast laying down. there are not a lot of spots I can sail her, she needs a lot of water and catches a lot of weeds but I do get her on the lake once in a while, and unfortunately she is in a class of her own. I don't know of any one with a boat this size.
