    You're right Colin. I believe I'm right in saying that next to the River Severn the Taw is up there as being one of the fastest flowing rivers in the UK. It must made for an eventful time for the bargemen.

    If you grew up in North Devon as I did, these barges were a common sight. They sailed from their moorings at the Brunswick Wharf on the River Yeo on the high tide out onto the River Taw down to Crow Point on the Torridge Taw estuary approximately 10 miles as I recall.
    There they moored and came to rest on their keels as the tide went out. They took on sand from bucket loaders parked nearby and sailed back to Barnstaple on the next high tide.
