Let me give you an example: in Italy, "skylight" is translated as "osteriggio." I believe the words "sky" and "light" have a strong connection with an object that allows you to see the sky. "Osteriggio," on the other hand, in everyday language means absolutely nothing to ordinary people.

You're right about everything, Bob. I have to say that linguistic differences and peculiarities amuse me greatly and I consider them a treasure. I've noticed something (but correct me if I got the wrong impression) about nautical terms: you Anglo-Saxon speakers use terms that everyone can understand. In Italy, however, nautical terms are completely ignored by people who aren't in the industry. They are words with no connection to common words. If you don't know them, you can't arrive at them through deduction or analogy.

I am pleased that you found the thread OK Alessandro, and thank you for letting me know that you found it interesting.
Technical terms often fail to translate well into a different languageโฆ..and sometimes they fail to translate at all.
Before I retired, I worked with several different German ๐ฉ๐ช engineering manufacturers who each had their own description for the same technical process or machined partโฆ..and often even they didnโt know the terminology or name that was used by their fellow engineers in different engineering companies for the same part.
Needles to say, that very few of their individual technical descriptions translated into English (!) so I can easily understand how the technical term โStrakesโ failed to translate into Italian.๐ฎ๐น
On top of all that, the English ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ language has several oddities, so many that I fail to grasp them all myself โฆโฆ.and I live here, and speak it as my native tongueโฆโฆalbeit not very well !
Bob.

Yes, Bob, I found your thread right after you pointed it out to me and read the first few posts. I liked it to let you know. I can confirm that I found it interesting. I've never built a hull with those triangular pieces; it was a completely new problem for me. If I manage to change the title (but I don't think so) I'll let you know.
P.S. The translator doesn't translate STRAKES into any Italian word.

Hi Alessandro,
It was Fireboat who kindly advised me that I could change the typo that I made in my STRAKES blog title .
Unfortunately when I tried to change it I could not access the actual title line - only the narrative .
I can still access and make changes to my original wording, but I cannot access the title line to make any changes to it.
Like yourself, I have chosen to put it down to my own incompetenceโฆโฆ.or not being able to understand a simple instruction?
To save myself some embarrassment (about by computer incompetence) I have chosen to believe that I have perhaps left it too long and the opportunity to correct my โtitle typoโ has expired ๐ค
So if you should ever develop a passing interest in STRAKES - try searching for SRAKES ๐คฃ
Bob.

Thanks for the reply, Bob. I actually couldn't do it, but I wasn't sure if it was my own incompetence or the user simply couldn't. I might try sending Fireboat a private message.
