WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

they used to have them until global warming has made the winters a little warmer. Me and my friends used to go ice skating on many golf course water hazards on Long Island around the 5 towns near Far Rockaway.

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

My childhood was on Long Island (Whitestone). Can't remember, do they have "Caution - Thin Ice" signs up there?

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

Hate to brag, BUT...

After most of the year of having our (Suncoast Scale Model Boat Club) regular model boat site (Lake Seminole Park, Florida, USA) was unusable due to weed infestation and algae. Finally cleaned up we had one meet (hot!) then hurricane damage to the floating dock.

Well, blessed be! The county moved on this pretty fast and repaired the dock, even better than when it was installed at my request eight years ago.

Today (Sept 17, 2023) EVERYTHING was in tip-top condition. The trimmed grass, clear water, repaired dock, and even the temperature was down to a decent 88°F. This was perhaps the best shape the site has ever been in my 50 years running model boats there.

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

True enough Lew, but our boats( and operators) don't get eaten by alligators, bit by poisonous snakes, AND... we have ice boating!😁

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

Hello RodC!
Your Words : "a Inuit friend from Baker Lake brought one down one time for Christmas dinner. It was all dark meat and extremely dry, not pleasant to eat at all"
It's all in the preparation! You can also leave it in the wine for a few days, then prepare it with a good sauce. . . similar to venison pepper! Meal time!
Served with mashed potatoes or fried potatoes and vegetables . . .
Sorry guys, this is a model boat site!!!🙈🙈🙈

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

We have "Snow Birds" here in Florida. (Seasonal residents that come down during the winter.) They help clutter up the roads. I guess one could call them protected.
Florida is the third largest state in the United States.

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

Oh yeah!!!
They have the same problems as we do!
The Canada geese have taken up residence here and are chasing away our ducks. Some of them are now shot down and the eggs in the nest are pierced, so the numbers are slowly decreasing. Since we have pike in our pond, they also contribute to the reduction in numbers. Mostly the chicks are the victims.
Again, feeding is strictly forbidden and, like you, we have a number of illiterates among the people. It's enough to make you pull your hair out. 🙈🙈🙈

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

Canada geese are a protected species here as well but the Inuit are permitted to kill them for food. They are not Canadian geese, the species is called Canada geese. Do you have any other protected birds in florida? I have relatives in Florida but have not talked to them in 30 years to ask. They are half english, half Seminole. When my grandmother died in the 1990s I lost contact with that arm of the family. During the very worst of Canadian Winters I used to feed the Ducks down by our public boat launches where we sail our models however with the new city bylaw coming in prohibiting interaction with wildlife, which included feeding ducks geese and Canada geese and Schwan's I immediately stopped doing it

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

In the USA Canadian geese are a protected species and you can not hurt them or eliminate them. Why? They are good for nothing but shitting up the environment. It cost money to clean up their mess on the ground and water. It's about time to thin out their ranks and make it more pleasant for the environment again. Sorry for the rant.

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

It may take another miracle on the Hudson to happen here in Toronto for something to be done about the Canada geese population. They don't even make good eating, a Inuit friend from Baker Lake brought one down one time for Christmas dinner. It was all dark meat and extremely dry, not pleasant to eat at all

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

The problem seems to have worsened with the ever increasing population of Canada Geese !!.
I recall reading a paper some time ago about the damage , nuisance and public health problems that these wild birds cause when 'domestically'
encouraged . Just how much of this is fact I wouldn't know , other than nothing gets done untill there is a serious incedent in relation to the "Problem".

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

We had similar problems here in Florida earlier this summer. The county (parks dept) said that nature would take care of it. Well, after several months the finally mowed, trimmed, and treated the pond and perimeter.

We had one good meet and then the recent hurricane came thru and damaged the dock rendering unsafe.

Hopefully our backup pond is still usable.

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

Len1 using an airplane prop is noisey, the props for drones tend to be quieter...But I don't know why. Must be the airfoil versus the rotational velocity. A 4-motor drone shud be 9db (almost 10 times) louder than a single-engine aircraft with the same diameter prop, but they aren't. Drones are stealthy things.

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

when things really get bad here with the weeds and algae the only boats that can be used are air boats but I hate the loud sound they create. Anyone know of any that are not so loud?

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

We had similar probs on our water in Chateaulin several years ago, we bought 6 weed/algae eating carp, they were about 6" in length, they are now about 12 - 18" and the weed problem has been solved.
We have lost one for what reason i have no idea but it was surface bound for several days, poisoning? non of the others died so don't know!
We have a large immigrant Czech population, there was a worry that they would find the pond and fish them out, apparently carp are a delicacy for them, but it hasn't happened to date!

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

We gave up last Thursday and brought our boats in after repeated fowlings by weeds. Yes, people insist on feeding the ducks and geese regardless of signage. Toronto City Council passed a bylaw this year prohibiting interaction with wildlife, that includes coyotes and wild geese ducks and birds. Feeding bread to birds results in a disease called angel wing which results in the birds not being able to fly. It has a hideous appearance, it is caused by the sugar in the bread. Canada geese can produce up to a kilogram of poop per day and of course this is a rich nutrient for the weeds in our public boat launch Lagoon. The Lagoon is not flushed regularly by Lake Ontario, it has a single Inlet / Outlet and the Lagoon is primarily to protect the shore where the launch ramps are located. We try to stay close enough to the convoluted Shore that we can use the lifesaving aluminum j poles to pull our boats back to shore. Even our rescue boats get fouled by late August

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

I hear that Phil! For us it happens about every 5 years. We have 5 tributaries entering our lake and as a result invasive species of plants (especially millfoil) come with it. It'll cost out lake membership $80,000 to have it treated next spring.

Exeter Canal is green with weed and algae.
Councils answer is “it’s not a priority due to cost”

Similar issues for us at our lake, especially with regards to feeding bread 🍞 to the ducks etc. People don't seem to be able to read the signs.

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

Sunshine, low water levels, heat and an abundance of nutrients all combine to promote the growth of algae and water plants. In deeper water dyes can be used to restrict the growth and aeration by fountains etc help by introducing oxygen. Waterfowl can in large numbers also add to the problem, especially when fed excessive amounts of bread. Normally we see the situation start late June and continue until mid October but temperature, especially frost can kill and stop the spread of most of the plants.
It's an annual and costly problem to control. Possibly why councils are keen to close and fill any ponds and lakes under their control.

WEED PROBLEMS !!!!!!

Usually the annual weed problems come and go - but this year things look worse than ever in many areas around the UK.
Is it that Councils and Park management consortiums don't know what to do - or do they need help ???🤔
