    Mickey Finn
Purchased original Rojair Mickey Finn from Ashton Models 35 years ago - hull suffered damaged so made a F/G mould before repairing and sailing. Made spare hull from mould and there she sat for 35+ years. Original Mickey was sold many years ago but as retirement approached the burning desire to fulfill old challenges re-emerged. So , after putting out calls for help, diagrams, photos or information on the model boat forums, thanks to "John Dowd" and a couple of other guys, I finally got round to resurrecting this fantastic 36" yacht.
    "Genie"
"Genie" was classic Marblehead design from Vic Smead.

All these photos were sent to me a chap called John Dowed.
I made my own fixtures and fittings mainly from, I think it was 1/2" ally tube bent to shape, goosneck turned from polypropolene. Radio box was a "ferraro rochette"plastic box.
Sails were flat (no pannels)"Rip Stop Nylon " But needed batton stiffeners to help hold the set - I may still have a plan for the sails ? - Tried both pocket Luff and Eyelet Luff .
No longer have the model but still have my master F/G mould . Happy Days !

Hi Guys, great website but still getting into the forum posting and navigation aspects , (post stroke grey cells dont always work as they should) - so as they say "if in doubt ask" .

    1.What is Flag status ? .
2.Can i put photos & video in same post ? - (I have just worked round it by posting video and photos separately in the Media Category - is this good practice ?).
3.Does it matter what category you chose ?.

Thank god for cut & paste and spell checker otherwise this post alone would take hours !!

"Genie" was a classic Marblehead 50" long. Designed by Vic Smeed, she had a hard chine hull construction.
This was my first "home brew" model yacht and I ended up building 4 of these in total - so pleased I took some picies.

Long gone now, but not forgotten !.

After starting sailing with the Robbe Optomist at Lower Hut in Wellington, Kiwi ingenuity started to rub off onto me and my first "Home Brew" Genie was built using scraps of what ever I could get my hands on,- then came my 2nd, my 3rd, then the 4th !. Happy Days !.

It all started for me about 60+ years ago. General Jumbo was my favourite character in the Beano, being able to control and communicate with models fascinated me to say the least.

At school we all took the academic subjects in our stride, Maths, Science, Physics were tools to be used โ€“ but for what?. Geography put me in a world of my own wanting more to travel.

As for History! โ€“ Well if it was swash buckling, pillaging pirates or conquistadores searching for new lands, it had my full attention! , coupled with a blend of Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure Island, Mutiny on the Bounty and Robinson Crusoe โ€“ I guess these were to be my seeds of destiny.

Does it ring any bells ? ๐Ÿค”โ›ต

Cenbeth - great write up with picys, the process can be daunting when casting - I have tried 3 metods to produce a keel bulb - thought i would also share my experiences .
    (1.Casting 2.Shaping 3.Filling)

    1. Shape a wooden keel bulb and from it produced a concrete 1/2 mould (*leave concrete to cure/dry) then cast as two lead halves.

2.Cut lead sheet profiles to diminishing templates, glue together and shape to bulb profile.

3.Used 1/2 wooden keel mould to Vac form two plastic keel bulbs which can be filled with lead shot/or concrete - then stuck together.
    Mni tnx

Again tnx fer comments, its nice to share our experiences and hopefully encourage new blood into the hobby. (Young or Old) !
Having not yet posted in the "Forum" department as a newbi to the website I am just testing how the "comment, share and post" selections work and how they interact with the "Forum" and the "Boat Habour" etc. - any advice would be kindly received !.

Just one final comment on the Wee Nip - even with just rudder only, its forgiveing, satisfying and connvenient plus with "artistic licence" its a great project to learn all about sailing, materials, design and how to have fun.
Well done to designer Graham Bantock
    Enjoy

Tnx fer comments re interest in the Wee Nip, I must admit that "Uni" rigs do appeal to me.
Since I resurrected an old "Mickey Finn" a few years ago , I also fancied a Laser and managed to acquire one last year - but in terms of grab and go fun sailing, more often than not its the Wee Nip !.

Am really enjoying the website and thanks again for the comradeship !
