Hello everyone, hello Cash!
Wow, we have some really great posts here! Soon some members of this homepage will become real authors! Yes, and luckily we have no duties on these great contributions! One day, one of you will surely write a book here with the title: My crafting stories! You all are just great, I can't say that often enough. Your Michel-C. ▲

Doug, I have a much lighter blue very close to what you posted, should be here Wednesday. If there’s no reaction to my paint test piece then I’ll redo the blue on the hull.
Frühschoppen, huh? Sounds good! If I’m ever up that way again I’ll take you up on it. And if any of y’all are down my way, we can do all sorts of different cuisines…but I’m going here when I hit 65 next year.. ▲

Hi Cash,
Sackville started her career as a short forecastle Flower. In 1944 she was refitted and heavily modified: new propulsion and a long forecastle. Which is the version you are re-creating as used for 'Greyhound'. Attached are the appropriate deck plans. The deck plan in Ron's pic is as she was built with the short forecastle. Z62 is the designation she was given in 1944 when she was converted to a 'loop layer' Workboat following a boiler failure, and used to lay induction loops across harbour entrances to detect submarines. Re Camo paint You are right, the blue you've used is much too garish. It looks more like 'Flight deck blue'. See pic 2. What you need is Western Approaches Blue, which is more like a pale turquoise. See pic three. Camo colours should 'fuzz' the image of a warship, not highlight it! For this reason it should also be matt or most likely a satin/eggshell finish. To avoid sunlight glinting off the ship attracting attention. More info on authentic paints and sources, and links to zillions of Sackville photos tomorrow (later today🙄) coz it's now almost 3am here! 😴💤💤💤 Ciao for now, Doug😎 PS If you ever make it to Munich I'll buy the brunch, 'Frühschoppen'😉😋 ▲

DFW = Dallas Fort Worth, eh? Never ventured into Texas, with all them open carry folks, someone might not like my Canadian Licence plates on my car. Not you, but there are some radical ones out there.

My son sent me this, “ getting the grey right” 😵💫
The photo below is taken from a recent Today’s Defense article showing these problems to be industry wide. The U.S. Navy warship is painted with the newest paint from various manufacturers that all “meet the spec”. The traditional “haze gray” is variously being described as “dim gray, light gray, tannish gray, pinkish-gray, and green-gray”. Although the new paint is extremely weather resistant and environmentally friendly, it does not seem to hold its colour well. Clearly, we are not the only ones having colour challenges, the U.S. Navy’s “Sea Gray”... ▲

Cash,
Looking good! Two paint comments. 1) Is the Tamiya a flat or a shiny finish? If the latter, a layer of dull coat will soften the color a bit. 2) Blue contains Red, the fastest fading color found on ships. As such, Blue's dull quite rapidly and often chalked. All that said, the color at the ship yard, vs even 3 months at sea will look appreciably different. It has been interesting to follow several museum ships that have recently been re-paint in camo scheme. The comment most often heard is "they don't look right". 😁😁😁 ▲

Hi Ronald. To my knowledge, or at least in my experience, neither ca nor epoxy has any ill effects on styrene, as they don’t melt plastic together like plastic cement does. Now, if your talking about heat developing during curing, and that can be mitigated to a degree, depend on fillers used and how much one uses, and how much accelerator. The styrene used for the hull is pretty thick, so it would have to get very hot to affect it.
As far as the portholes go, I’ll do what I did on my Vosper, which has some portholes in the hull. I’ll glue in the portholes with plastic cement or canopy glue, then I’ll glue a piece of the thin clear plastic that covers say, one bank of portholes, wide enough to get a solid joint between the plastic and the hull, making sure to not get glue on the portholes proper. That way, even if one or more of the portholes came out of the hull, that hole will still have sealed plastic around it. I try to build for reliability. My methods my seem different, but they work for me. Only time I’ve had a problem is when I try ro get something finished for the weekend, and I have a cavalier “I’ll do that after the maiden” attitude. It’s bit me twice, no more. Cash ▲

You are fortunate that none of the styrene has melted or deformed from any of those adhesives.
What are your plans for keeping water from coming in at the portholes? ▲

Hi TD,
As my last foray onto the site for tonight😉 let me huff in your ear and blow the fog away! In the case of this thread, the Revell 1to72 Corvette, the scale factor is 72. Decimal, no fractions😉 Cheers, Doug😎 ▲

Attached is a link to a Scale speed calculator using the formula I posted below, from Froude's calculations.
It doesn't offer knots as a unit but that is irrelevant as we are looking for the result of a ratio - the scale factor. If you enter the knots value of the full size vessel, 16kn in the example shown, the answer given will be in knots. To convert the answer to mph multiply by 1.15087😉 Happy number crunching All. Cheers, Doug😎 ▲

I am attaching scale speed chart that I save from an old Ship& scale magazine. I have used it for 1/48th models, my scale, and it seems to provide a fairly accurate basis.
We need to remember that scale speed will almost always appear to be to slow, so some adjustment maybe warranted. Also, it is always nice to have just a tad more power, in one's back pocket, for those unexpected moments. Cheers All. 😊 ▲

Jump,
Your model is going to need SOME GRUNT!😮 Scale record speed = 276.33 / root 10 = 87.383 mph (or 76knots!!) Bon chance mon ami, and don't flip it😁 276.33 was the highest official record recorded. On practice runs she was clocked at 320mph until ...🤔☹️ Scale speed ~320/3.16=101.2mph. Go for it Jump😁 Don't forget to add her RYA registration number, see attached pics. Cheers, Doug😎 ▲

Hi Ronald,
Based on William Froude's experimentation with models, producing the same wave form as the full size ship, the consensus is scale speed = full size speed / the square root of the scale factor. In your case: 16/root 72. or 16/8.485281374 = 1.885618083kn😁 Call it 2 knots (~2.3mph) and you are close enough. Cheers, Doug😎 ▲

I am also building this kit, though as a Canadian post war research vessel. No guns, they were removed and scientific instruments were added.
I researched the top speed of these vessels and found on a good day it was 16 knots. Question? What is that at 1/72nd scale model? 🤔 Here was the response from Google: 0.256 mph that’s maximum speed! I will be using a brushed motor and probably geared to keep the model moving along in a stately manner. Research photos and the model in various stages of development. ▲
