Update on my Sterling Corvette

These original drawings are awesome. There should be enough information here to get the information that I need to continue with the Sterling build I have. I used to teach tech design in a high school, so old school dividers and calipers are nothing new. Thank you for your help.

These are a little wrinkly but do show what you need. I us a divider when I do mine. So I get it.

This site is awesome for getting information and I appreciate the pdf files sent. I have the instructions book with the pictorial drawings provided by Sterling when the original owner bought the kit, but your pdf's give me a printable copy I can use. The Sterling instruction booklet reminds me of the instructions I have for my Dumas Mr Darby tug that would freak out a lot of inexperienced builders.

I need the assembly drawing that must have been provided with the kit that shows the model's plan and elevation views so that I can fabricate the exterior deck and cabin details as well as the driveline and rudder details probably shown on the elevation.

Update on my Sterling Corvette

A couple weeks ago I bought a Sterling Chris Craft Corvette at a local auction. It just looks like the original owner had the model and like many of us just put it away and never finished it. The original owner did all the hard, time consuming work (hull and cabin construction). Nice that the Sterling build booklet and all the fittings are included, even though they are pretty heavy. Many of the mahogany cabin parts are broken and need to be remade.

It will need a lot of work to get it functional, but hopefully I can make some progress in the next few months. If anyone knows where I can get the Sterling drawing for this model, let me know.

wow...that is so cool. And very creative. I purchased my sound module from "Harbor Models" in California.

Brightwork,

Thank you for the kind words. Your Corvette is a beautiful boat as well.

To answer your question about the LEDs and fittings, when I got the boat nearly all the original fittings were missing. A fellow club member had purchased a complete original set of Sterling Corvette fittings off eBay and used those to make molds. He has made resin fittings for himself and two others of us from those molds. So, all my fittings are those resin copies.

In the fittings where LEDs are to be incorporated, he lays the LED and wiring in the mold before he pours the resin in. The end result is that the wires are hidden, and the LED is actually a part of the fitting.

I will attach a picture of the molds, I apologize as it is a low-quality copy lifted from a text message.

PS What sound module did you use? I'd like to add realistic sound, as well!
So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

I believe it is in the Chris Craft directory (Blue Book). I have recently moved so all my books are not unpacked, but I will let you know when I find it.

Peejay. I always believed that as well. I used to say that and have been informed a few times that there were 3 built. The photo I have posted is the only survivor. Love to see a record of this somewhere. Cheers

Update on my Sterling Corvette

There is only one in existence, because Chris Craft only built one. All the other hulls were built as 42’ Express Cruisers.

Sterling issued a plastic kit of the Express Cruiser, and Marx released two - the first as a ‘toy’ with a clockwork motor, and the second as a free running electric powered model on the same hull with few modifications.

Great restoration. I have toyed with adding lighting to mine as well. Did you just use the original fittings and place the LED against the nav light? This is mine. I have a sound module in her as well. Twin V8's purring away...respond to the throttle RPM. Ohh and I have added a photo of the real macoy. Only one left in existence I believe. The 50' was a prototype and only three or four were made.

A friend of mine has done a little research into the Flying Christine and believes that it would be possible to build all three variants of this well known craft from this one kit.
With some minor modifications this should be reasonably easy to achieve and would make an impressive trio.

Update on my Sterling Corvette

Thank you all for the kind remarks. There was a lot of help from a fellow club member. I think it turned out pretty well.
Here are some more pictures of the finished project and a couple of "before" for reference.

All doors and hatches now function, and lights were added.
It is fully functional, and passed sea trials before finishing touches were added.

Unfortunately, current pictures "on the pond" are going to have to wait. Yesterday, my son-in-law went out and checked our lake. There was 8" of ice at noon.

PS I am adding one picture of her during "sea trials" a few weeks ago.

Beautiful job, just as it as meant to be.

Sterling Models has been gone for a long time, nice to see that their boats live on. 😎
The sure way to succeed is, just try one more time

Update on my Sterling Corvette

My ex Sterling Kits Chris Craft Corvette is currently almost back in one rot-free lump, but it has taken so much time to get it this far, the comparatively simple matter of final finishing and detailing has not been given any recent attention.
I think it just "wore me out" :(

Update on my Sterling Corvette

A year ago I posted a picture of a B15M Sterling Corvette I had acquired.
At that time it needed a little TLC.
With a lot of help from my friends, It has come a long way.
It's time for an update ....
