ACE Nautical Commander 7-ch Gold radio

Great news.

I removed the Ace transmitter back and tested all the channels with separate servos. As before , the starboard throttle did not respond.

I took a closer look and found the the solder joint to the pot has completely severed and once I connected it temporarily it worked.

Yeh ………👍👍👍

I will have it reconnected properly and now will have the original three throttle control. One for each motor.

Isaac I agree that it may be time for a rewire. Len

Re post 7. A friend had a multi ch. RC set and he had a channel missing, I checked it over and it seemed to be voltage related. Never found out why, but as the battery came off full voltage the channel came back???

Oh! Just remembered. I was working on an old Tx and the problem was the old black wire syndrome. There was a negative wire from the battery into the electronics and it was black through out its 10 inch length.

However you say the battery meter indicates a voltage but it might be worth measuring it at the business end.

Issac,
That is great progress! Being a purely analog radio, the in-op channel could be anything from a bad wire connection to a bad potentiometer.

I removed the receiver from the boat and all disconnected.

I installed a separate battery to the receiver, removed the crystals to confirm that they are clean and matching. I then plugged different servos.

The transmitter has a brand new 9.6 battery pack which I Velcroed to the back of the transmitter for easy charging.

The good news is that the radio and receiver work on all but one channel ( the right throttle not responding).

So more checking.

I will have to rewire the entire boat. Too many “gremlins”.

All

Thank you for your in dept responses

Firstly, the radio transmitter and receiver both came with the boat. So I know it is a matched set. It was professionally installed.

I did glue back the transmitter volt meter. It just popped out of place.

A new transmitter battery pack brought it to life and shows voltage in the green.

I pulled out the crystals from both transmitter and receiver and visually they look clean and both marked channel 72.

I have a friend that still uses old radios for his RC planes and I will see if I can use one of his receivers with either my or his matching crystals.

I know that there is some sort of transmutbecause initially two of the servos were chattering when I moved the sticks. But then it stopped.

I will look further into your suggestions

The servos do work when I plugged them into my 2.4 GHz system

Thanks 😎

Isaac, I also have one of these Ace sets. (We have the Suncoast Scale Model Boat Club here in Pinellas County, about 78 miles north of you.

I noticed the voltmeter is displaced in the panel on the transmitter. Did you check the connections? Another check (receiver) that might work is to connect the receiver to a battery and a servo to see if the servo "chatters" or humms which is somewhat common with these older radios.

Issac,
Did the receiver come with the radio or did you acquire it separately?
Make sure that the receiver and the transmitter match for frequency band, ie, both AM or FM.
Check to make sure that the transmitter is using the correct frequency module. I believe, at least mine did, that that radio has two transmitter modules, one on 72/75 frequency and one on 27mhz frequency. Match it to your receiver. Check the labeling on the transmitter modules. Don't trust labels on the radio case.
Check to ensure that the crystals are a matched pair. The same frequency, channel, and BRAND. Different manufacturers used different shifts in their crystals, some positive, some negative. They don't mix.
What do you have plugged into the power slot on the receiver? It appears to be a servo lead? Is it JUST to a battery?
What happens when you power up the transmitter? Does the needle on the meter move?
Check to make sure that the antenna wire connection inside the transmitter is secure.
Just a few thoughts.😐

Hi Isaac, very impressed with the Tx. Do you know if the meter is showing battery voltage or strength of the transmitter field?

As you have been inside for the battery it should be easy to see where the meter is connected. A couple of my old Tx,s measure the RF and not the voltage of the battery and I think older Tx.s do this.

Is the RC set on AM or FM? I have old multi-channel sets on AM but the UK frequency was 27Mhtz then.

Have you any other equipment that works at this frequency? Previous 27mhtz sets and 40 Mhtz sets could be either, but do not respond AM to FM. The crystals should be marked AM or FM.

It might be worth checking with a local club to see if anyone has a working RC set at this frequency, a 4 or 5 ch. rx or tx will operate some of the channels.
Good luck

Isaac a good morning
have you cleaned all the contacts of the cristals as the equipment hasn't been used for years. Is there any corrosion visible? just to make shure. In Europe we used 27 and 40 mhz for boats
Hopefully this helps

ACE Nautical Commander 7-ch Gold radio

I have an original ACE Nautical Commander 7-ch Gold Series Radio that was not used for many years. The batteries of both the transmitter and receiver have long died.

I am refurbishing a huge model ( 6 ft long ) of an American torpedo boat from the 1890's.

However, after replacing with a brand new transmitter battery pack of 9.6 V, I am unable to interface with its 8 channel receiver.

Not sure if it is the transmitter, receiver or crystals no working ( channel 72 on 75 mhz ).

I would like to keep the transmitter if possible.

1- Anyone has any ideas as to troubleshoot it?
2- How about recommending a new receiver that would work with this radio ( I am willing to change crystals ). And can I purchase one new on Amazon?

3- Lastly, some folks have converted to the newer 2.4 Ghz system. How do I have it converted?

Thanks
