Not quite ready to start building yet as I must progress my other builds a bit more first but I'm chomping on the bit to get going on it so thought I'd kick off anyway.
Not the most exciting of boats but it is one that I've been planning to add to my Fairey fleet after seeing a small photo of it in a book I have which also provided the inspiration for some of my other builds.
Anyway, it is a small river and lake cruiser, 16' 6" long and is based on the hull of the Falcon daysailer which is of hot moulded construction, like many other Faireys.
Like my other builds I'm building at 1:12. The only drawings I could find were from a brochure showing the top and side views and it is those that I've used to start my drawings. The hull lines have been arrived at by trial and error and I hope they work out!
Most Fauns were fitted with an outboard, which was my original intention, but I've decided to do an inboard version first. Maybe an outboard later?
Because of the hull shape I've decided to do plank on frame which will be a first for me, so fingers crossed!
Hopefully it won't be too long before I can post progress of the actual build.

Yes, though I have been doing a bit on the Swordsman on and off during the last few weeks. Must get back to it before I start on this one in earnest. Motorbikes are tucked up in the garage so it's on with the winter hobby again now! I don't know how you do it in the workshop, especially the fiddly bits. At least I'm in the nice snug, smallest bedroom, though I can't swing a mouse nevermind a cat at the moment! I've just finished the keel/longitudinal frame so all systems go now and can source parts and materials required. I shall follow my usual method and draw up the other parts as I go along. Chris

Hi Chris,
It sounds like we will be venturing back to our model boat building for the winter season at about the same time! The snow has been washed away here by the rain, and it is still very cold - but I did venture out into the workshop (shed) last night and it was "bearable" (with a few layers of clothing) - so I will make a start! Finished drawing the half-frames to the point that the frames can be produced for building. This involved some more tweaking, removing all the construction lines etc. and then joining the two halves of the frames together.
As well as plank on frame being a first for me it's also the first time that I've built by extending the frames for fixing them to the building board. Just got to finish off the longitudinal frame and I think it's ready for building. Will then draw up a list of timber required and then order what I haven't already got. Chris

Will - yes, I do have some space. Was thinking about a small servo, as not much force required and a rod fixed to the rudder shaft but hadn't thought anymore than that yet about the mechanics of it, but your idea could work. I've got a small servo as used in Huntress and River Cruiser that will do so will dig it out. I want to avoid having the servo at the front of the boat and using snakes if I can. I can always make more room if required. Chris ▲

That looks good Chris, fair play.
Just a thought, is the stern thwart going to be tight up against the inside of the transom? If not, could you pass a solid fixed rod up off a servo horn to the underside of the tiller? Being close to the pivot point, you wouldn't need much travel of the servo to produce a decent amount of rudder angle. Will ▲

Spent a little more time off and on with progressing the drawings. Bit of tweaking as I go along - alter one thing and it affects lots of other things! Just a mass of lines at the moment but will be clearer once I've tidied them up.
Bit of searching amongst the suppliers I generally use sourced a 2mm shaft/4.76mm OS dia. tube as I wanted the smallest practicable dia. I could find to suit the small external keel. I then drew this along with the motor and mount and then positioned it until I was happy. This is a small hull at only 16.5" and the installation of the components is going to be tight. I've managed to position the battery across the stern which is good as the motor is quite far forward though it won't be very heavy. Just got to give the positioning of the steering servo some thought and how to operate the external rudder and then will have done enough to finish the frames/bulkheads and the keel etc. and begin building. As long as I know (I hope!) that the overall design will work I can follow my usual practise of making a start and dealing with the design issues and methodology as I go along. Chris

Yep, same here. I'm terrible with names, but (usually) remember a face (or a vehicle 🙄)
I can also relate to the going upstairs, or into the Kitchen for something, then wondering what it actually was. Google is used regularly in our house, as is Alexa (other devices are available) Will ▲

Bit more progress, all frames/bulkheads now drawn up. Next job is to draw the keel including where the motor will mount. Also think about where the various components need to go, how the rudder will be operated and access for cables etc.
Can't do anymore until early next week as doing my stint at my mother's tonight and tomorrow and going for a walk on Tuesday. Chris ▲

😀 Well guys I think many of us are in the same boat, pun intended!
I've also never been very good with names but am very good with faces, but often can't put a name to them! And many a time I've gone upstairs and can't remember what I've gone up there for! Films that's another one. My wife and I struggle to remember actors names or "argue" over who it is in a TV programme. We often have to turn to Google to settle it! ▲

Hi Bob, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a bit of optimism and suffering with word blindness, I think it comes to all sooner or later. A thing that really bugs me is seeing someone in an old film and you recognise them at yet can't think of their name. I think my favorite is going into a room to get something, except you can't remember what it was you came for. All part of the joys of getting old and becoming irresponsible. Regards, Gary.

There may be some improvement Bob but alas I don't think our verbal skills will return to previous levels, well not as far as not struggling for words goes anyway.
Even in my last year or so at work where I interacted a lot, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues, I noticed that on occasions I couldn't think of the word that I wanted and it was just due to just getting older. At least when writing no one would notice! I used to write quite a bit at work, which always helps with spelling, grammar and word choice, but now I'm retired I write a lot less though as you've probably noticed I do like to have a bit of a ramble! I do enjoy writing. ▲

As well as blaming it on old age, I sometimes wonder if two years of lock-downs and self isolating, along with having a hobby like building and restoring model boats (also done in isolation) has taken away my ability to communicate as freely as previously ? Now our restrictions are "easing" and we are all communicating more with each other on a daily basis - I am hoping that my ability to remember the words that I need to find in daily conversations will slowly return as I practice the art of talking more often? Thank you for your kind comment. Really looking forward to doing the plank on frame, though with some trepidation as well as was the case with doing things for the first time on my other builds. I really must update My Harbour as the builds have moved on, albeit not as quickly as they should have done and there is another one to add - in addition to the Faun! It's the one in the foreground which is a Huntress Long Cabin. As well as the longer cabin the side windows are different and more modern looking and it's fitted with a stern-drive. Unfortunately the full-sized craft never progressed beyond the drawing stage. Photo attached of the current 5 Fairey builds. Chris

The other thing about remembering things is I can be having a conversation and stop because I can't think of a word and sometimes it's an everyday sort of word. At least I can blame it on old age and laugh it off! Good thing about doing the drawings, and building of course, is that it keeps the old grey cells active. Only got 2 more frames to draw. Smallest boat I've ever done and it's got the most frames at 11 compared to the 5 or 6 with my much bigger Faireys. What I won't probably be able to do with this build is to have my usual lift off superstructure. Thoughts are to have a removeable cabin roof and seating/floor. Water ingress isn't a concern though as the boat will only be used at slow speed and under calm conditions as if using an open boat. Chris ▲

Continuing with the drawings but it's one step forwards and 3 steps backwards at the moment!
Was cracking on with the frames and realized that when previously working on them, 12 months ago, I hadn't finished altering the cockpit from outboard to inboard which meant the frames were in the wrong position. Also I've now decided to change from diagonal planking to longitudinal (something I'd considered earlier) which means having the frames closer together to reduce the span of the planks. I've introduced 2 extra frames to accomplish this and moved them all closer to one another. This has of course resulted in quite a bit of redrawing and alteration but I'm making progress now. Chris ▲

Producing bulkheads for hard chine hulls like the other Faireys is not too hard if you have the top and side views. Not so easy for rounded hulls as you only have the points at the deck and keel to start from. Having a photo of the transom is good though as I tend to start there and work forwards using photos for reference. And it's certainly easier producing drawings using a computer drawing program as making changes is easier and quicker. I had years of experience on the drawing board for building projects though so I could have done it by hand if I'd had to. There is some trial and error involved and tweaking as you go along. Easier with a hull lines drawing! I won't know if it is right until I build it though! I'll see how the motor performs but it would be good to go brushless. I don't have a clue how to approach that though especially as the motors are completely glued together. Bob - I did see a KK motor on EBay but silly money was being asked and I think it was a bit big. As you say not many around nowadays and hard to find for a scale of 1:12. ▲

I remember seeing a small electric outboard motor in the various Keil Kraft catalogues that I bought over the years.
My memory is not that good any more, but I think it was offered as an option to be paired with a small KK speedboat kit called the "Cresta" (?) Small electric outboard motors have always fascinated me, but I don't see as much choice as there used to be. ▲

Chris, would converting the Gakken to a small brushless be an option? Not so much for gaining speed, but for reduced weight and also, because you could find a small, slim ESC that may be easier to fit/hide away? I definitely agree that's the more correct/period looking outboard for a Faun.
How you guys manage to produce accurate drawings for bulkheads etc from a single side view, or even a side and overhead view, is beyond me at present. I'm sure it's going to make a lovely alternative Fairey model which will go nicely alongside your other Faireys. Will ▲

Not been able to spend much time on the boats this week, but some time was spent sorting out the bits required for installing the prop shaft and rudder into my Swordsman build and today I'm back on the drawings for the Faun.
It took some time to understand what was required but once the fog had cleared I'm now making some progress and have produced one of the bulkheads near the stern. Now that I've done that I should be able to move on fairly quickly with the others but will no doubt have to make some revisions when I start thinking about the hardware and RC equipment etc. and access to the various components. I spent part of today going through my cupboards to find the outboards bought if I pursue that version. The Gakken looks more period but isn't as well made as the Yamaha and would require painting etc. to make it acceptable. Both will need modifying so that they can be steered. They are both 1.5 to 3.00 volts and should move the boat along quite slowly, which is what is required and will be simply turned on or off. I'm going to concentrate on the inboard version though first.

I am sure it will come back to us once we get started again!
My own target is to get started again sometime next week after I have moved my Super-7 and got everything tidy again . I had to shift a ton of suff to make some space to work around it and be able to lift the machine tomorrow when it is being collected. Once the garage is "tidy" again ( I am sure the wife won't agree with this statement) I can get back out into my workshop and make some more mess again! 🤣 ▲

Just been looking at the drawings and was amazed to see it's been almost exactly 12 months since I last worked on them having made good progress at the time!
Trouble is with leaving it that long is that I've got to get my head around what I was doing and what my thought processes were, especially as I find it hard to remember what I did last week! Anyway it appears that I finished working out the shape of the hull and had started on the bulkheads. Picture attached, sorry about the quality as taken off the computer screen. Chris

Definitely going to be an interesting and unusual one this Chrisot a Fairey that I have seen built as a scale model before. I doubt many/if any others have either.
I'm sure that I have seen plans for a VERY similar looking model before, but definitely wasn't referred to as a Fairey or Faun. I will have a look to see if I can find them, or even if I downloaded them at the time. Will ▲
