I have several model boat builder friends .One such friend had started the Billings Santa Maria years ago and didn't want to finish the model so I was gifted her . It's a static kit that I'm sure a lot of us have either built or thought about building her . I have a question Billings models supplied nails to hold the hull planking onto the ribs & I was wondering How to hide the shiny nail heads To find a filler the same shade of planks my be a challenge & I don't want to pull out nails either any Idea's would be helpful. P/S the print is stamped with 1962 thats 59 years ago .

A Billing Boats model of Norske Love that I had in 1986 and never finished was supplied with steel nails but the same applies as you say Martin the heads will sand off when contouring the planks.

Hi Garth,
I think the idea was that the nails were made of soft brass so that they could be sanded back flush to the wood to just leave a very small circle of brass visible. Martin555. ▲

I haven't posted for a while & I just wanted to send a photo of the Billings Row Boat . Billings older kits would have a block of Balsa wood in the kit box that had to be carved to make the tiny boat so finally got around to it as sailing hasn't been happening due to the rainy weather here in Ontario to bad the west coast in B.C. aren't getting our weather . P/S I am amazed I could make the row boat & I think a lot of people would give up on model boats because it takes a little bit of time to carve these things . Canada is metric now so I used the metric side of the ruler but I still think in inch's & Feet .

Every little row boat needs to have seats so between grocery shopping & cooking made the seats and installed them without burning up supper .

I mentioned that Billings boats used nails to install the hull strips . I realized that these ships of the 1492 era have side wooden ornaments or stand offs & I think by using these wood stand offs I can hide the nails & can any one tell me what there really called

Started installing these parts on the hull & I just wanted to know if any one knows what this part of the hull is called ?? I thought I could hide the nails with these things .

Got all those things mounted on the hull .I think back in 1492 they had no truck tires to protect the hull when docking so they used wood and it makes the ship look good to 24 things cut & mounted .
