A Billing Boats model of Norske Love that I had in 1986 and never finished was supplied with steel nails but the same applies as you say Martin the heads will sand off when contouring the planks.

Hi Garth,
I think the idea was that the nails were made of soft brass so that they could be sanded back flush to the wood to just leave a very small circle of brass visible. Martin555. ▲
