Having just the hull of the first steam launch.
I looked at what to do with it.
The lines of her are long and narrow leading me to look at narrow boats and barges.
Finding a few contenders for the project all of them would suit my plan.
Changes to the bow and stern may need to happen.
My biggest concern is the boat is not flat bottom. Builders license may be where I over look the bottom.
On the water it will not show up as much.
Need to choose one of the options then on to rework and new build.

Hi Martin Good idea.I have looked at that and do be-leave it may be the way to go.
The bow is easy as its a block build I can reshape.

    Hi Rick,
    This could be interesting.
You could possibly convert it to a flat bottom boat if you have a good bandsaw.
She should hold her shape long enough for you to glue a new bottom on.
    Just an idea.

The barge narrow boat or something in-between starts. Cleaned off the top and pieces inside the hull. Cut the bow and stern took the keel down. Used filler to bow and stern. Filler needs to dry before able to work the profile.

    Thinks!๐Ÿค•
That chopped off bow could be the start of a model of the Sydney Opera House Rick ๐Ÿ˜‰
Doesn't mean you have to rush off and decapitate the rest of your boats though ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Thanks Martin Yes it is drastic. The good thing is I built her in the first place. The other is I didn't have any other plan for her. If it shouldn't work out only time and work lost.Nothing ventured nothing gained.

The build up of the bow has been a few days as the filler needs to cure in between coats. The product is LePage's plastic wood. Has been a good product for me building my boats.

I remember this product in the UK back in the 60s, it was in a tube. It is available today but as common, I bet its not as inflammable as I remember

Started the upper structure to be able to fit in the hull. Need to work out how far to have the accommodations sit into the hull. Getting the structure in and out when running the boat. The frames are done for the windows. Every thing needs final clean up and fitting.

Back ground when I first started in boat building seeing other members of my boat club use styrene my thought was how hard can that be. I purchased .060 and .024 styrene. Turns out styrene for me has not been kind. Wood became the medium for my building so much easier and less hassle gluing it together. With this project an experimental build the upper structure built in wood decided to also build it in styrene. Will continue to build both and see which one I like the best .

What glue do you use? When using styrene I found Gorilla glue had more fumes than Lepage brand. For wood it is generally Titebond III though I find it runny not thick like some other carpentry glues.

When I decided to do the narrow boat I had the hull from my first steam build as I had taken the steam plant out of it and built a new hull for the plant. A narrow boat had intrigued me. Having started the project by stripping out the hull and giving it a reshape I built the upper structure in two products one in wood one in styrene. I'm waiting on wood product to be shipped so I can keep going. Two problems I'm having First golf season is here and getting down to the work shop has taken a back seat. The second is the boat looks to bulky and big. With the project on hold will rethink the whole project . Will find and order a narrow boat plan .

    Hi Rick,
The old saying 'paint and putty will hide a multitude of sins' is as true for wooden models as it was for wooden ships.

Hi Nerys I much prefer wood to styrene. I find with wood I can fill mistakes or blemishes much easier and gluing wood a lot easier than trying to glue styrene.

Wood, wood, wood, every time, I've tried that styrene stuff a couple of times and regretted it. Both times I had to supplement it with wood to finish the job. Never again and I am dsure some people will say the exact opposite. It takes both worlds.
