Martin's a man of many talents, the sculptures for example are amazing, and he's not too bad at furniture renovating and ship building either (I'd let him do my couch if he was closer) 😁

Hi Trev,

Yes, the clock is approximately 2m tall. I built it from a plan starting with some rough sawn mahogany boards. The finished clock is french polished.

It is fitted with a German movement with Westminster chimes.

Hi Guys,
Thank you for your nice comments.

Thanks Dave,

The highchair was made for my granddaughter in 2020. The teddy is my first attempt at the technique of 'Intarsia'. The woods used are what I could find in my woodpile and include mahogany, ebony, purple heart and sycamore. None of it has been stained.

In order to cut out the shapes, I had to buy a scrollsaw (second hand). It's amazing just how useful that saw has been since when building boats!

Many years ago I used to build and fly model gliders. Gave it up eventually as I got fed up bringing them home in a bin bag. The flying was fine, it was landing that I couldn't get the hang of! 🤣😂

Since then, I've been making things in wood. Bits of furniture and toys. These are a few, shown in date order from the early '80s to 2020. The rocking horse was built for my children when they were small. It is now being played with by the grandchildren. Same with the fork lift truck.

While travelling through Arizona I found the Dwarf Car Museum. Two older gentlemen build cars and boats in 2/3 scale. These things are incredible! These are street legal cars! I would consider this modeling. Thought I would share with you. You can't tell their size unless you stand next to them. Thanks,. Dave RR

Hey JB, The engine model is the classic Visible V8. I added the two four barrels, made the intake from Lego parts. Kit bashed the headers, trans and a few other parts. It has a 1000 rpm motor with a variable throttle tucked inside the trans. Firing order is correct for the led spark plugs. It is 1/4 scale and still available. Thanks,. Dave RR

Mainly steamy stuff, but also I have a 3d printer, a cnc router, a laser engraver a small lathe and a small milling machine. I know they are not models, but I still get wndless hours of fun 'playing' with them, and they do produce models. Apart from boats I have steam engines. Look out for the Chief Engineer inspecting one of the engines...

What other types of models do our members build/refurb?

Hi Len, 40 coupes were rare here, - 39 and 40 were the best looking models. A friend of mine bought this ex NZ top show rod (late 60s) in late 70s in well used condition (had a ford Y block with 3 carbs then), and what a piece of rubbish it was behind all the chrome. It was (till butchered) a rare 1940 B8 convertible, (probably the only one in the country) Most car nuts in NZ nearly cried when he did that to it. Things like the chrome grille 'buttons' were bathroom fittings, and the work underneath was deathtrap stuff. Side pipes were fake with hidden take-offs at the front. Home made front end. Awful fake piece of rubbish, drove like a pig,- never liked it.

Recent pics, possibly a complete rebuild to original look, or a replica.(on second mag cover 2021)

Hi Dave, your collection looks pretty impressive. The see through Olds motor is cool, what scale is it ? Looks like those demo motors Wynns used to have in the 70s, I was into cars and bikes (full size as well) but I found the models a bit too addictive so had to stop before I ran out of room. Bought a number of Ertl, BBurago and Maisto die casts on 1/2 price sales (can't go past a bargain) but you need space for a decent display cabinet like the ones you have, and didn't have the room. Also didn't want to collect too much while renting. Now I have my own place again you can see why 😁

What other types of models do our members build/refurb?

Stephen. long story cut short.
I have built completely from scratch and still have a 3 1/2" gauge 1/18 scale live steam Shay locomotive from a design by Kozo Hiraoka.
1/48 scale 3 foot narrow gauge electric trains. No longer into this
A 1/24 scale tug boat based on Dwight Hartman hull and design.Recently updated to modern electrics and controls. Still in use.
1/14 scale hull blown R/C Tamiya Knight Hauler 18 wheeler. Still in use
1/14 scale full blown R/C Tamiya Fuel tanker. Still in use
1/14 scale full blown R/C Tamiya modified Grand Hauler with a roll back bed. Currently in line as my next build in a month or so.
Machine shop builds that include a magnetic mantle clock design by Weston Bye and a Otto Langen pillar flame sucker engine.
And not to be left out, my full size street rod. 1940 Ford coupe with a SBC 383 stroker motor and all modern running gear and creature comforts. Used around town and out of state excursions.
I guess this long story was not as short as I thought😁

What other types of models do our members build/refurb?

I've been into planes since 1977 when I worked on Norfolk Island for a couple of years, Kits like Graupner were all duty and tax free so were 'expendable' while learning to fly. I've re-created 2 70s Graupner planes from the original assembly plans which I still have,- a Super cub and a Terry. (Still Have the box for the cub.) Had to make my own built up wings, as the originals were foam cored- obechi covered.

Started with the cub, then Terry, Taxi, Bell 47G heli then other models from DuBro, Soarcraft, Fliteglas and jack Stafford (Super Minnow pylon racer x3) Came back home and made a number of other planes and boats from UK and US manufacturers who no longer exist. Oldest kit -pic 9- is a 1975 Saturn models Cloud Dancer, (UK) -E/ converted which I still have, and which flies as well as anything today. Also still have the Fliteglas Bird dog from 78, (pic 8) which I fitted with large flaps to suit small flying sites on Norfolk Island.

While on Norfolk I had large Hornby and Lima train sets (also duty and tax free,- made a killing when I sold them back home!) Built a lot of boats (starting around 1965) mostly own designs (diesels and glow motors) plus the Graupner Commodore and the 'Optimist' one on cup yacht. First plan built boat was a Vic Smeed MTB, - bought the plan in 68 and took about 40yrs to finish it😁 (full sized boats and RC planes got in the way)

Since joining this site, I've built 5 boats,(Stiletto on the stocks as well) 1 barge, restored 1, (Fairacre) re-motored the MTB, and the Fairacre, built an amphibious truck, converted a toy to an RC Jeep and made a number of improvements to some of the models. All boats are electric and all planes have been converted or made for electric.

Recently sold a collection of old plastic kit planes from the 60s and 70s. Went mad and collected 1/18 scale cars, Hot wheels etc by the dozen for a few years (all in boxes packed away for years)- No idea how many I have,- was going to give some of the smaller ones to the kids hospital to save the hassle of trying to sell them, but the staff would probably take them for their kids.

You can double pics 3 and 4 (current models, - tow boat and barge missing) for the number of models over the years, some sold, crashed, worn out, given away etc, -same as most modellers I think, (know a Chinese guy who has well over 100 kit planes in his house,- one large room full !) Good to have a bit of variety 😁 Added - my experimental quad ducted fan 'Vortex liner' (KK board controlled) not a roaring success, sucked huge amounts of power giving little battery time for testing. Had some short hover flights which proved the concept.

Nickthesteam, I’ve some CAD drawings for the laser cutting and the buttons. Each button has a thin piece of wire underneath, along with an RGB pixel. The button wires connect to TTP223 touch sensors going back to the Arduino mega. So each button is touch sensitive and can be illuminated in any colour.

I then added a sound module, left channel goes into the telephone handset, right channel is external. Each puzzle is audio based using voice actors and follows the story of telephone (and radio) evolution.

Certainly quirky but I’ve enjoyed making it and watching other people trying to work out how to solve it 😁

That sounds hilarious with the 6 rotor drone too! I don’t think people realise how naturally unstable drones are when relying solely on the operator! Thank goodness it was only the daffodils and not next doors cat that copped it 😂

Built and crashed a few control line airplanes in my teens. Had some HO trains, broke up the layout (still most of trains and accessories packed away).

Been into operational scale model boats for about 50 years. About five years ago my son got me involved in RC Armor in 1/16 scale. My four tanks (all cheap-o Heng Longs) are completely re-done correctly, painted and detailed. My US captured "King Tiger" (photo) is based on a WWII video of the same. Have some WWII non-tank military vehicles (including truck in the photo). 3D Designed and printed and assembled some M10 ammo trailers (thinking about selling some). Have a Greyhound armored car in the works. Currently am working on a major modification to a US half track. Made buildings and backdrops for armor meets as well as many figures (photo) , mostly from kits.

I have a 1/16 crane (with many mods) and plans for a RC conversion for a 1/16 flat bed semi truck (ERTL Big Farm)

However, my mainstay are my boats, which I plan to get back to soon.

Fireboat, I too have never had any success with these new fangled flying machines, they always came home in a bin liner. As for drones, I swapped a 3D printer for this enormous 6 rotor affair, first time I tried to fly it it lifted off the floor, rose to around 4ft off the ground, flipped over on to it's back and decapitated swmbo's daffodils. I managed to stop it just as it was about to set off in hot persuit of next door's cat (at ground level and upside down) not for me, I think my reactions are too slow, I will stick to steam boats! The Arduino telephone looks fun, are there drawings available? I have several Arduinos kicking about, I could make good use of one....

Hi Dave,
I too like Triumphs.
I had a 66' 650 Bonneville that I bought as a basket case. Later a 69' 750 Bonnie.
Prior to that I had a 750 Norton Commando, punched out to 850 with a 3/4 race cam.
Now I have a 2013 Harley Breakout.

Hi Stephen that telephone is lovely. Arduino is something I havent got round to yet though really should. I'm not sure if I've more RC boats or planes. Possibly around twenty of each and I'd like to think I'll use them every year. Having to start a clear out though as new kits on there way. The RC eagle has an fpv system onboard so with goggles on you really do get a birds eye view! It thermals very well and has unlimited vertical climb.

This is my micro RC Heli that's just arrived for my plastic magic conversion

Sadly I've already ripped it to shreds as changing the fuselage to a super puma

I haven’t the greatest history with planes. Built two, crashed two! Although the second crash was after a longer flight time than the first!

Never tried helicopters, but I have built a drone from scratch. Incredibly difficult to fly when they rely solely on your stick controls (vs bought ones with software that keeps them steady regardless of wind etc).

I do like a good electronic project though. Completely un-model-boaty, but latest is an Arduino based escape room style puzzle “telephone”.

Love the 🦅 plane!

RC planes, helicopters and anything electronic related. Was introduced to RC boat kits and balsa aircraft from around 5 years old and been part of life since. I've still my first boat a little Nikko catamaran speedboat and my second which was a Tyco hovercraft. Both still work though are safely nestled away in storage. Put a kit in front of me and I'll build it. Want a boat constructed out of anything and I'll convert it 😅👋

Hey Stephen, I also build 1/8 and 1/9 motorcycle models and have approximately 60 built examples. I also will contract a build of someone's real bike. I have done several of those. I also fool with planes, trains and cars. (Lost all my HO trains in a basement flood) Also strip and paint hot wheels. Just love building and working out problems. Thanks, Dave RR
