US Coast Guard 44'
I saw this boat in Montauk, NY. she is called the rollover boat as she can right herself when rolled over or pitch-poled in heavy seas.
https://uscg44363.com/portfolio/44-foot-motor-lifeboat/
The USCG would do routine rollovers just to train recruits.
She could also survive a pitchpole!!
They don't do that anymore as a rollover would cost over 10 K US
The tragic demise of 44300, February 12, 1997, in she which survived three roll overs and a beaching with the engines still running
I picked up a box of scrap from a partially completed build.
This is a Scrap Build not a Scratch Build.
There is enough template scrap left over, so i was able to fabricate the necessary parts. Time will tell
Now that she is finished, a couple additions:
Mast and running lights.
Working radar
Flags and decals of USCG Patches
Water cooled ESC and Motors.
I bought this vessel on a whim, I have grown to love her

This is a model I picked up at a Tag Sale some years back.
I think I paid $2.00 for it.
It is as I bought it, I did nothing to it.

The directions say it may take 9 months to a year to complete.

Fantail Launch Kit bought on ebay.
Only problem was, the box only contained scraps and the plans.
Being stubborn as I am I decided to build it any way
The plans did not call for a mahogany deck, I decided to dress her up

USS BlueFish
While I am waiting for the epoxy to fully harden on the 44, I am embarking on the Bluefish build.
I bought this on ebay only because it was 1/4 of list price, and I did find it interesting.
Seems like a nice little kit.
Fitted the hull together, using CA, not Duco and tape as is called for. I used the CA so I can see and secure each area of the seam as I go along. The hull is very thin on the bottom., will require some filling and fairing,

Thanks for the compliments, Mates, I hope the final result does not disappoint.
I do struggle with these clear finishes.
At least 3 more coats of varnish to be applied.
I'm having trouble with dust particles in the finish even after carefully wiping with a tack rag.
Maybe better tack rags?
I would rather not have to rub out the final finish as the captain's varnish lays out nicely.

Hello Mates,
2nd coat of varnish.
The first coat was a disaster, the varnish crawled badly.
I went by the manufacture's recommendations.
Wash the hull with diluted ammonia followed by wiping with brushing thinner. In Lew of brushing thinner I used mineral spirits.
The problem arose because I did not leave enough time to laps for the spirits to evaporate.
The second coat I wiped the surface with denatured alcohol, since it would leave no reside and evaporate readily.
I couldn't resist a few pics of her partially assembled.
Sorry for photo quality.

Hello Mates,
I just received an email that Dumas is closing on May 15, 2026!
I find that very sad as they have been in business for over 70 years.
I wish I had the financial resources to stock up, as I am sure that the prices on Dumas's products will skyrocket.
Just noticed that they only offer the Mt Washington plans not the kit, glad I was able to purchase mine when I did.
I just noticed that this subject has already been addressed, sorry for the duplication.

Hi Julian,
On my Ways I have the Chris Craft Commuter, Chris Craft Triple Cockpit and The Ulysses.
I am anxious to start the Commuter.
I know I am a glutton for punishment. The mahogany boats require a lot of work to achieve the proper finish.
the Typhoon took two coats of epoxy and 14 coats of varnish.
I could have shortened the process by applying more coats of epoxy.
I am on my 5th coat of epoxy on the Runabout. Time will tell how many more finish coats I will need๐ฎ
Sorry for the picture quality๐

Julian,
Thanks for your kind words, I hope the end result turns out OK.
As I stated before I am not very pleased with the mahogany that Dumas used, I prefer a tighter grain as in Honduras.
I also love mahogany, my favorites being Honduras and African.

๐ Testing LED diodes
16 days ago by
๐บ๐ธ pressonreguardless (

Hello Mates,
Just adding my two cents,
In my some of my boats that have multiple LED lights (Mt Washington, Seguin) I use boards that step down the voltage. The reason being multiple lights can be powered from one source. if they are of the same voltage.
On my HO train layout, I use boards as I have multiple lights. some boards have three voltage outlets. Some of the boards are adjustable so I can control the output, as in my carnival rides.
The railroad passenger cars that I have installed LED lighting in, I have used resistors because of their cost and size.
I do admit that I have limited knowledge on the subject, although I do find it fascinating.

I haven't posted lately as all I have been doing is applying epoxy coatings then sanding them off to achieve the finish that I desire. ๐โน๏ธ
I used the Interlux Chris Craft red mahogany filler stain, that is used on full sized boats, due to the porous quality of the mahogany.
The first coating, after the stain was an epoxy that is used to penetrate wood. the reason being I was afraid of lifting the Interlux filler stain.
On the Interlux label there is a warning that a two-part epoxy may lift the stain, which I found not to be a problem in my case.
I am now on my third coat of Total Boats High Performance epoxy resin and the hardener.
The first coat was at full strength applied in my basement which was 47 degrees Fahrenheit, big mistake, the label on the epoxy stated the minimum temp. was 55, so i had some curtains in the finish.
The second coat was applied when the epoxy was heated to 80 degrees.
The third coat was heated to 100 degrees.
the fourth coat was heated to 120 degrees.
The epoxy was heated to thin it.
It can be thinned with alcohol or acetone, but I preferred to use heat, so I did not compromise the integrity of the resin (just my opinion).
I found the 120 degrees to work well.
The pictures show my progress of lack of.
The epoxy was heated Sous Vide, so I can control the temp.
(Good thing I am not married, what wife would put up with my shenanigans)๐๐คฃ๐

HI Chris F,
Funny you should ask.
It was the second attempt.
The first install was good to the first layer of planking.
When i tried to locate it from the final Mahogany planking, i couldn't locate it.
So, I had to re drill and reinstall the conduit.
(No cure for stupid.)
Yes, it is for the bow lite.
On the Typhoon, I had to install the wiring as an afterthought, ie between the two layers of planking. if the wiring fails I have no recourse.๐โน๏ธ
