Inshore fishing boat

The plans are out of MB Dec 2010 by James Pottinger, I have altered the stern to make it flat and the curve of the foredeck was altered later in the build, I am also building it to 1-24th scale.

As this is my first scratch build from drawings I studied Bluebirds builds on Mayhem before I started.
First job is to trace the frames and the keel and transfer them onto the plywood.

I will follow this one with real interest Alan - I am looking to do a scratch build after the Waveney lifeboat. Mind you given the cold spell at the moment all work is still at a standstill, been banned from the dining room 👎

The build board was marked with the frames and the keel was laid on these to get the prop shaft in the right position, the keel was cut and the prop tube glued in position. The frames are fitted to the building board making sure they are all square and perpendicular (love that word 😀 )

Time to start the planking, the wood I am using is Lime cut from Ikea wooden blinds, cut to 6mm on the bandsaw and sanded, it has a fine grain and bends very easy.
The frames were faired (if thats the right word) sloped to take the planks using a file and strip emery

Not only is there paint on that particular bench Roger, there is also Araldite, P38 and the ends of tooth picks stuck with super glue 😁

Thought that this would be a good time to put the motor mounts in while I could still see through the hull.
Then some more planking, there is starting to get some real good bends on the planks now.
I find there is something satisfying about planking, until it goes wrong, then it's 😭

I cannot tell a lie, the nails are made with a very hard, sharp pencil 😯

The main planking of the hull now finished.
I had intended at the start of the build to paint the hull but because the planking had gone so well and no filler was used, I would sand, stain and seal it.
A coat of Z-Poxy was applied to the inside of the hull.

The hull has been removed from the building board and the pieces on the frames that fastened it to the board have been cut off. some pieces of wood have been screwed to the building board to clamp the keel to the board.

Two pieces of sheet balsa cut to the shape of the hull that will be used later to lay the deck planking on

Bulkward supports are made out of Oak and fixed in place with Araldite.

One side bulkward and hull up to the forward raised deck completed.

It was at this stage and after much thought, that I decided the hump, sorry, the curvature of the forward raised deck was to much, so using a hacksaw blade, two elastic bands, straight edge, and a sanding drum it was altered to my liking.

The drawing has now been discarded and I am working to photo's of trawlers of the internet.

For those that have been snooping around my workshop (grin) where the blue plastic and drawing are, a stoothing wall has been built with a door in it, the dryer and freezers are now behind it, this keeps the workshop a lot warmer, and the wife has to knock to come in (with my cup of tea)

I like the model. 👍 I see you have to live with the washing machine, as I do. Also had the boiler which meant washing drying on wet days. The boiler has just been moved upstairs, my shop is in the cellar.

The next job was to make a capping for both sides out of teak, the two pieces of balsa that I cut to the shape of the hull where used as a template. the last photo shows one side completed

The hull has been sanded down and stained, then a coat of sealer.

The rudder support is made from brass strip and a brass nut filed to suit, then all soldered together, cleaned up and fitted with two brass 2.5mm nuts and bolts.

Me again. I was lucky enough last year to visit the yard where the Pilgrim ( wooden trawler was being rebuilt). Look some shots of the planking. Can't post them here, so a build blog. That will only contain them so you can see them . Bob

Alan, the hull is a real work of art 😎 Being relatively new to the hobby and certainly on one very steep learning curve it never ceases to amaze me at the inventiveness of some of the ideas that are used to achieve a result. 😱

The next stage is the bow protector, this was made out of strip brass, the pieces were cut to shape and tinned, clamped to the bow and a large soldering Iron used to melt the solder, this way ensured a good fit, no I didnt set fire to the hull.

The rudder is made out of a block of balsa and sanded to shape, then given a couple of coats of Z Poxy
