On the subject again a group of model boaters has to become an entity also carry insurance and have a purpose. Otherwise you will be ignored or excluded. Even a local park with a 'Model boat pond' named as being there and controlled by the council. Some years ago they wanted us to leave, go away etc.

There is slight improvement now but little or no acceptance.
Our models are electric or yachts there is a speed limit but owning a house nearby has a price premium and the said owners do not want you there.

Some things here are unbelievable but money has a very loud voice.
It is the dearest place to live outside central London. Average house prices are 17 times average yearly earnings and triple that to live adjacent to the park!

Hi wcmbc, your reference to restaurants. You trust the restaurant to treat you well supply a good meal and you will not be ill afterwards. Of course restaurants are regulated but you may not want to organize one yourself just for a few meals and clearly it is an activity that can exist on its own. You have trust in the restaurant and that is their selling point.

If you want to sail yachts there is no local 'shop' to go to as it is a niche interest and you have to do some things for yourself. The rest follows A committee in a club you belong to works on trust and doing what you want it to, they are elected or should be. Sometimes requests for an action need a reference to the 'real world' and are not persued.

I joined a Bridge club 30 years ago which had been in operation for less than a year. It had the usual 'committee' all self appointed not the best but they set it up. Gradually losses due to age etc brought in elected new blood and we then got to be a good and well run club.

I still know people who say we should be doing this or that but do not offer themselves for the job. If you contribute you will get a good return.

Looking at your last paragraph ponds here get users straight away. In my area we have gravel extraction and lots of holes with water in them. Most are owned by fishing clubs or controlled by sailing clubs. You would not be made welcome to bring a boat along and sail it.

We have lots of water locally but not much to suit our hobby, I am afraid money talks and excludes!

    regards
    Roy

Hi all, re the thread on committees. They fulfill a purpose I am one of those that end up on committees. If you take part in something that needs organising then someone has to think ahead and plan so that you get what you want.

I want the things I like doing to happen, and so you need a say in this. A committee member should always represent members interests and I have no time for the cliques that sometimes form.
Because of my own position in a club (Secretary), I was approached by a group in another club and they represented 40 odd disaffected members who wanted to up and leave and start again elsewhere. They were unhappy with their own committee who treated them with disdain! One afternoon I overheard 2 of their committee talking and was genuinely shocked with the attitude they had to the members.
Apart from that I said I would consider their situation and think of the plight they saw themselves in and respond a week later.

I spoke to the group again and said you have to accept that it is your fault that you have such an awful committee. As good men, you did nothing and were taken advantage of.
Get together sort out who is willing to stand for various positions on the committee and at the up coming AGM use your block vote to elect them.

A few months later they did this and it is now a happy club which I also belong to now!
So if there are just a few of you why have a committee? but when there is administration to do not everyone finds this easy. For me I have experience in admin and management and hands on technology, not to any real depth but enough to see gentle ways of doing and achieving.
So do not knock committees, as in life they can be mixed in their abilities and effectiveness.

If you do have a vote use it and weed out the self important guys who love the power.

I agree with Admiral Doug! Power to the people! But use it wisely.
    Roy

@Roy. I hear you and can relate. However, this clinging to the committee idea is WW1. Everyone loves a good meal, yet nobody has a say in how a restaurant is run. As long as the meal is good and the price is affordable you may be a regular soon. Why should RC ponds be any different? Here's water; bring boats; have fun.

Hi everyone. Just to tell you that South Africa is shifting focus as more people start to realize the old school clubs are doomed. The last 4 months have seen the opening of four new sailing venues in one province and it wasn't a committee decision. In fact, the committee all agreed it will never happen. And here we are. 20 years of "growing the hoษ“by" has come to an end in just 4 months. Now we are growing the rc Boating hobby. Time to kick the habit of committee-religions and take action. ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

" by the members for the members."

    Whereby all members are equal.
But some members are more equal than others.

    Sound kinda familiar?
Maybe a shorter Term of Office would help. Quarterly elections?

@Scamp. Yes. That sounds about right but the reality is affected by personalities. You walk into the AGM to elect the members to act for the members and a month later two of them change into Hitler and Mogabe and you are stuck with the tyranny until the next AGM. I get you. ๐Ÿคฃ

I had sane problem after a dozen years in Puerto Rico I became accustomed to weather. Moved back to Massachusetts n I freeze in summer.

Iโ€™m just about done with my DE1040 Garcia 5 foot ship. I have printed the side stabilizer paddles n will put on next. A few paint touch ups n itโ€™s finally done. I need to build the DASH drone as final part.

At the risk of being labelled an old timer fanatic ๐Ÿ˜Š I have to say that cars like that were built with pride and outlasted many of their owners. Sadly this is not something we can say of today's cars where "replacement" is as often as a plug change on a 1960 Impala

    Hello all,
So that your questions are answered, here are the data
    Opel Rekord 1700 1961
    Tabbert Comtesse 395 1958
    Both original 95%

It is always amazing how many of these old carriages can be seen. Look and dream ok, Do I have something like that myself? I don't have time for that!
    One more thing:
The Opel is not mine, we have the white new motorhome next to it.
Either you have a classic car or you make model boats! I've decided in favour of model boats! All right?
    Read you soon,

    Cheers from Madrid!
Last Sunday (2024-04-21) we had a pleasant spring day. I went to our local pond to watch some fellow modellers sailing their ships.
A Type VII U-Boot, a Guardia Civil Patrol and Rescue Motor Boat and a small fast craft were there.
Unfortunately, weather was warm for one month, and water was not as clean as desirable, causing issues with small pumps. I will add more pictures and some videos in other sections.

Here on the west central coast of Florida, this has been a crazy winter. Much cooler than an average winter, about two weeks ago we had a break with a few days setting record highs (into the low 80's F). Back to the cool, damp, and occasionally breezy weather.
The tourists and recent transplants don't seem to mind. I moved here 60 years ago and my blood has "thinned out". Those tourists walk around in shorts, tee shirts, and flip-flops while we are bundled up.
Today, another "front" moved through bringing a lot of rain, cancelling the meet as Kevin mentioned. Prior to this we had several days of good weather for model boating. Why is it the weather seems to be at its worst on Sundays?.

    Funny you should ask.

The weather where I live has been quite abnormally temperate this winter.

In spite of that, my wife and I decided to take a winter road-trip south.
We left the tundra in Minnesota on 1/31. We headed south for some winter warmth. Yesterday we were traveling west on I-40 in northern New Mexico with 38 to 50 mile an hour crosswinds. We looked at the weather forecast for our destination, and discovered that we would need to โ€œre-winterizeโ€ our motor home if we stayed the course โ€ฆ as the overnight low was going to be 20F. We altered our course and are now only 20 miles north of Mexico, where the overnight low was a balmy 35F.
The scenery is beautiful, but the weather is NOT what we expected.

    Hello all,
It is a real pity that so many people register here and unnecessarily burden the HP of our admin.
One example of many: registered 2010 last time in 2011 in July. See printscreen
On other websites you are contacted after a year and removed a month later if you don't use it.
I know that this would be a somewhat unusual request . . . But with over 7000 members . .
    Just one question. ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”

The other thing to bear in mind, is not just the number of members on the site, but also system storage. Just storing a new members details, even if they never use the site is a miniscule amount of storage, and hence costs. So the time taken for Stephen to clear unused accounts is probably far from cost effective.

    Hi Mike, very fair observation.

It's not just a problem of this forum, many register just for a question or not even that.

I might think that the administrator (in an intelligent and far-sighted way) prefers to have many members even if not very participatory and to encourage the spread of naval modelling.

Maybe they don't create a big IT inconvenience, but only our administrator can answer this.
    I wouldn't cancel anyone.

    I quite agree Michel๐Ÿ‘
    I too have noticed that.
Particularly in such as the 'Birthday This Week' Notifications.
Names crop up that I've never heard of. When I check them out I usually find that they signed on several years ago and then went AWOL after a few months, without ever posting anything.

In some unfortunate cases Birthday This Week is announced for much respected members who have left us, departing to the Great Model Shipyard in the heavens, and are sorely missed.
Latest example being our dear Fleet Admiral Nerys, who would have been 91 last January 28th had she not sadly died last March after a long and courageous fight against illness.
A lovely lady with a consummate knowledge of sailing barges, especially Thames barges which she captained during her long maritime career.
Pic shows her Avatar, a Thames Sailing Barge of course.
    Gone but not forgotten.

Hi all further to my comment 6 months ago. My friend Guy never made his 104th. birthday, He died just a few weeks short of 19th. June. Not sad at all, as he had enjoyed a good life and he told me he was ready to go anyway.

We had a planned party for him at the Model engineering society, but we decided to carry on with the day and remember Guy. Some of his ashes were sprinkled over the outside Gauge 1 track he had contributed to. Nice idea and I shall pass by him every time I visit. (He did build a couple of boats as well)!

Like many of us, not in anyway famous just one of those that keeps the world ticking over and working. This is the bit the vociferous amongst the population forget, but someone has to keep the lights on.

Where can I find the plans of a Cherokee class brig sloop of HMS Woodlark (90' x 24'7") with took part in the American War of Independance. Hopefully to build a model about 12" long 1/90 scale. My 3 times great-grandfather was in command of her during that time.

    Hello all,
I have looked to see who from Switzerland is participating in this forum.
Disappointing, some have stayed on as recruits, 2 are current but have not responded to my request.
It would be cool to meet someone from the forum in our own little country.

I have only been a member of this site for a couple of months now, and I have never come across such a wide mix of people and skills, who are so friendly, with never a bad word said. The support and friendliness is quite brilliant in this day and age, when half the world is either fighting or arguing. Long may this frindliness and worldwide harmony continue.

Ah, you young guys bragging about being 74, etc.

I mention age because I find it very relaxing working on my boats, from research to finally in the water and all that good stuff in between. Yeah, there can be some frustrating times but overall I think this is a good hobby for "staying young" - we have a few members well into their 80's. (This is Florida where a lot of people move to when they retire.)

I've been living here for 59 years and 50 of those years have passed since I scratch built my first RC sale model boat, a 42 inch long tug boat.

I am happy to be a part of this forum and read just about every post. So, ๐Ÿ˜‰WELCOME ABOARD๐Ÿ˜‰!

    Roy, et al.,
I don't know much about the model railroad sales here in the US. Here in Florida most homes do not have basements. Also with mild winters (tee short and shorts today) there's no need to go into hibernation and work on a hobby in a warm area of one's home.
Last year another hobby shop locally bit the dust. We now have two hobby shops serving about one million people in Pinellas County.

Hi, yes it is a thinking hobby, solving problems and assembling the drive train has many options and I include sails here as well and then deciding what is a reasonable spend and also to utilise what you have to hand.

Much of the thinking that goes into models is unnoticed by others but is the main reason for the building.
When I start a new model I start with a new page in my 'Notes on Boats' diary. Dates are important as well. I do a fanciful list of what I would like to have in the model, some things look impossible but then a few weeks later a possible solution pops into your head.
Everything gets listed including the build order and ticked off or crossed out as it all progresses.

Over the Covid period I often wonder if the now woke term BC could now be repurposed as Before Covid and 'the now' can be PC as in Post Covid.
Sorry side tracked. I believe sales of kits increased during lockdown but from here it is difficult to detect many new members coming into our area of interest.
Model railway sales increased by 20% in UK did the same happen in USA?

Anyway age was mentioned. On Friday afternoons I go over to see a long term friend he is mostly blind but otherwise active looking after himself with a little help. He is working on a Gauge 1 simple electric loco using his engineering workshop.

He should make his next birthday in June 2023 when he will be 104 years old. At my age of 84 going on 85 I feel a mere stripling!
    regards

Over recent months this Website has proved a real boon at a rather difficult phase of my life. Now well into retirement from UK Forces and then academia, I have since tried a number of model aircraft and boat clubs with far from perfect results.

It really seems that less and less air and boats enthusiasts no longer build models at all - but are merely content to sail new (almost ready-to-run new boats or even "toys") or past-on and used models from former (or even deceased) members.

This forum shows that many of us still build from scratch and not just assemble far-from-perfect kits. They have thus gained far more satisfaction from completing and sailing their own creations that from running someone else's efforts.

It is also great to see such participation from overseas members who are countless miles from clubs or even other enhusiasts. This forum is great and these "lone wolves" are an inspiration to all of us in a better position to join with others in the love of our hobby.

In short we must remember that model boating is a mighty wide church - from static to tugs, from scale-sail to fast electric racing and even to complex "plastic magic" sailing conversions of display kits, -- there is room for us all.

Please make the very best of it and make full use of this invaluable resource.

Happy New Year and with best wishes John. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Well said John, ownership of ready to sail models is never the same as ownership of something you have made yourself, whether that be scratch built from plans, put together from your own design, or built from kits. And if you are a scratch builder, like myself, it's a much cheaper hobby!
For Christmas (and birthday) my sons and daughter gave me some plastic display boats to make. Some are so small I have to use a lighted magnifying glass to see and fit some parts! Apart from the continual pleasure of seeing them, the building of them not only informs of their construction, it develops the power of patience and keeps you away from brain stultifying TV!

    Hello,

My name is Greg and I am 74 so no Spring Chicken more like a Dead Duck๐Ÿ˜. As I recently joined this forum after it was recommended to me by your member Martin555 I thought I would introduce myself. Although I have been building period static display ships for a number of years I am new to RC boats. I started my first RC boat about three weeks ago. The boat I am building is Aeronaut's cabin cruiser Diva. I'm finding the build very enjoyable and when I got stuck on understanding one particular build instruction I received advice from a very helpful and friendly member Martin555.

I understand that sharing my building experience of the Diva in a Build Log is recommended so I will start that in due course.

Thank you for accepting my application to join the forum and I hope to be talking to many knowledgeable members, as I'm sure you all are, as the weeks progress into 2023.

For me a new year and a new adventure.

    Hi Greg,

Welcome indeed to this wonderful site. I am sure you will find the Diva mode a great challenge to build and very satisfying to sail.

I note that you are based around Exeter, so please try to find Model Boat Club not too far away. As well as this site you may like to check the forums on modelboamayhem and Model boats (linked with Model Boats Magazine) which could lead you to local club s as well as host of useful info.

With very best wishes and please ask if you get stuck - we all love our hobby and will do all we can to help.

Hi chaps, how has this website helped me. A little while back the question was posed, are their any stupid questions or problems asked.
Too a man l recall that everybody who replied to the question agreed no there is not. Everybody has to start somewhere non of us are born with a full set of wings ( sails) and are able to fly straight away, this community of very skilled and patient people enable the less exsperianced to produce a model that they can be proud of. And that is how this club of great people have helped me.๐Ÿ‘

    Hi Shipmates,

I have been a member of the web site for a few years and I like many of you, are little worried about the future of the Hobby, with that said.

This site is a God send for many of us who live in remote areas and have to travel a great distance to a club or water to meet other mad people, like myself who spend their time building and sometimes actually sailing model boats.

Thanks to all of the members who contibute and ask questions, give advice, provide enthusiasm and make people welcome to this little family.

    Kind regards

    Hi Ron,
I live in Cumbria, in a area of sparse population.

I belong to Darlington model boat club, but it is a 90 mile roundtrip away.

Carlisle model boat club is about 100mile round trip.

Lakes of the Lake District National Park are unsuitable for model boats.

There are no model shops selling boats /fittings etc in Cumbria, buy most stuff online.

Indeed is this ร  fantastic site for ant one who wants ร  solution or a question answered regarding building. Personnaly i joined thรฉ royal model yacht club when i was 16 years old. We do have ร  fantastic maken espacially build for us. Thรฉ complet pond is vuiltje in concrete and had ร  depth of one meter on top of that thรฉ pond is about 2 meters deep with thรฉ actual ground level si even when it is windy it doesnโ€™t affect out sailing. Having Saรฏd this we struggle as Many hobby clubs with finding or welcoming new and preferably young members. We know that we are not thรฉ only club with this problem.
