Mersey Ferry Royal Iris(Fish and Chip Boat)

Photo 1 A start was made to fitting the superstructure. to the deck which was fitted to the hull. Access was inside the saloons.Painting and interior fittings of the saloons had to be done at this stage as they would be inaccessible when completed.

Photo 2 The stern with twin props and rudders in place. Saloon and deck in position.
Photo 3 Most of the inner saloon door and window detail was done on the computer on Open Office Draw program.
Photo 4 You can see at this stage why all interior detail and painting has to be completed first as you cant get at it later.

Further work on superstructure all done in plasticard.
The complicated shapes at the bow were done with plasticard but the nose cone was made from balsa block and hardened with resin.
As the boat was fully Illuminated, all the wiring had to be built in as now way could it be added later.
The Illuminated Royal Iris sign on the top deck and starboard nav light.

WOW! this takes me back to my primary school days in Bolton, it would be late 40s, early 50s. We had a school trip to sail on the "Royal Iris" she was a new ferry boat of the day, I remember it so well, we went across to New Brighton and played on the beach. Thank you for the memory jog. What is the fish and ship boat meaning? I live in Australia now so this is a real treat. Harry (236674) 😀

Thanks for your kind coments. She was called the Fish and Chip boat because she was the only Mersey Ferry to have a Fish and Chip Bar on board. She had an extensive Dance floor and was great for functions especially with the fish and chip suppers available on board.
