The Camper & Nicholson 55 yacht Adventure is a renowned example of the classic 55-foot sailing yacht built by Camper & Nicholson, known for its robust construction and bluewater capabilities. Originally commissioned as a racing yacht, Adventure achieved significant success, notably finishing second in the first Whitbread Round the World Race (now the Volvo Ocean Race). This performance, combined with the yacht's proven seaworthiness, cemented its reputation as a reliable and capable vessel for long-distance voyages.
The Nicholson 55 series, of which Adventure is a part, was constructed with a solid fibreglass/kevlar sandwich hull below the waterline and cored above, a build standard that contributed to its durability and strength. Sir Robin Knox-Johnson, a celebrated yachtsman, selected this hull design for his fleet of eight adventure yachts used in global circumnavigations, highlighting its exceptional performance and reliability. The series was also popular with the UK Ministry of Defence, with twelve of the twenty-six 55s built being purchased for sail training, further demonstrating their toughness and suitability for demanding conditions.
Adventure is a masthead cutter rig, a configuration that provides excellent sail handling and performance in a variety of wind conditions. The yacht's design allows it to handle both light and heavy weather effectively, with a smooth ride even in big waves due to its classic hull shape. The vessel is known for its spacious accommodation, capable of sleeping up to ten people, and features a large cockpit, making it ideal for both cruising and racing.
