    Hi Shippers

Here we go this was quite difficult to do by myself holding the camera and operating the transmitter.

Sorry but the are bits where I had to put the camera down whilst I operated the transmitter, this model took quite a while to do, same if you think I should have done something different or any suggestions if I do another model like this

    Good luck with the building

What is wrong with good old Fashioned Books - on of the best sources of information one warships is not availble online but if you get chance look at Janes Fighting Ships.

There is nothing wrong with the Internet if used correctly - the is so much s h one t on there sometimes it is difficult even for an hardened surfer to tell the difference.

The internet should never be a substitute for personal knowledge / memory.

Point noted about other Navies but lets face it the Royal Navy was once the biggest and best Navy in the world, nowaday, sadly, it may not be the biggest but its still the best.

    Right Oh Shippers Here Goes

    Here goes

    1. Most of you that answered got the answers 90% right - with one exception - the blue sign is NOT flown by the RFA !! it is in fact a defaced Blue Ensign - like many organisations that have an aphilation to the RN a lot of organisation fly the defaced Blue Ensign which normally has their cypher on the lower quadrant of the fly.
The Blue Ensing CAN be worn by merchant ship IF the Captain and a proportion of the Officers are members of the Royal Naval Reserve.
Strange to note however both ships and shore estalishments of the Royal Naval Reserve fly the White Ensign.

    2. Now the one you have been waiting for.........

    a. "You Have The Ship" - used when relieving someone of their Duty two examples in common use are listed below - the correct reply to this statement is "I Have The Ship"
Use One - when a new Captain is Relieving an Old one and is assuming Command - normally quite a sort process.
Use Two - When The Officer Of The Watch is changing and a correct hand over has been given by the off going OOW to the new OOW.

    b. "You Have Conduct" - an order given by the Captain of the ship only to someone who is Command qualified(normally the XO) or occasionally to someone is is doing the Sea Riding bit of the Command Course to indicate that they have total command of the ship and responsibilty for the whole ship, crew and safe navigation, responsible for the safety of any ship bourne aircraft operations. In fact this can be given when the Captain leaves the ship for any purpose whilst it is underway.

    3. The White Ensign can also be worn by members of the Royal Yatch Squadron - a very elite sailing club based on the Isle of Wight in Cowes, you cannot apply to join this club you are invited !! Membership normally restricted to the Noble Gentry, Senior Officers of the Armed Forces and MP's

That question was quite challenging, I would welcome any comments on the content.

    Thanks

    Hi Shippers

Here we go again - three parts both relating to the Royal Navy.

    1. Whats is the significance of the date 09 July 1864 to the Royal Navy.

    2. One which Mr google may not help you with - what is the difference between the command on the bridge "You Have the Ship" and "You Have Conduct"

    3. Who is entitled to fly the White Ensign on a non Royal Navy ship.

    Good luck

Doug your never a nuisance - it a pleasure to meet someone so knowledgeable with similar interests

I do like the old traditions and values which of coarse is what the Royal Navy is based on - unfortunately the younger generations do not seem to have the same values

    Right Oh Shippers, here goes,

    1. Scotman - these are metal plates (normally of a softer metal) on the f'castle of a ship that that anchor chain or to give it it's correct name the anchor cable runs over to prevent wear on the desk - off the top of my head the best place to find these was on a Leander Class frigate.

    2. Naval Pipes are the hole that the anchor cable goes down from the f'castle to the cable locker.

    3. The Berma Way is the main passage way on a ship sometimes down the centre somethimes down one edge of the ship depending on the class of ship.

    4. Robinsons Disengaging gear was used when ships carried proper seaboats rather than ribs, the purpose was two fold, as Doug rightly points out because two teams of people were used to lower the boad to ensure the boat was kept level, the second reason was in rough weather to ensure the boat was launched at the correct time so it did not get hit by a large wave.

    5. Futtock shrouds were in fact used to support the fighting tops and also provide a means for the crew to climb around the top in ships that did not have hole in the top.

Will do another one on obsure parts of a ship later.

Well done to those taking part.

    Pat
