About this boat

Ahoy friends! I found this pristine Sterling kit from Old Model Kits, and since it's a boat I have wanted to build since I was a lad, I knew I needed to get my grubby little hands on it! It is a thing of beauty, everything is still in bags, undisturbed since 1980 or thereabouts.

Just a small video not very good but it gives an idea of the performance of 6 to 12 volt standard motors run at 6 volt if you wanted more speed then 12 volt would be quicker.

I will drop all the photos here for you. Let me know when you start and what guidance you need. I have a build log going on a chris craft you can follow if you like.

I assume you have her plans in the kit.

Last three pics are when she was decommissioned and wasting away in Port Edward BC before being scrapped.

Thanks for the info! The boat when refitted lost a lot of charm, her wheelhouse windows were redone and the airplane-inspired themes got more marine, I imagine for the cold climate. All that horsepower, I bet she was a loud bigger when you were aboard her underway! I want to make sure this boat moves to a good clip as well as being totally controllable twin screw capable of mooring anywhere. In the early 70's my buddy had one that went very slow...but I still was hooked instantly. So mine is going to go fast. Thanks again for the great info! Any foto's are priceless. I am nervous about building her, I have to do a good job and I am still getting my sea-legs modeling-wise. I am going to go slowly and not panic!

    This is her history..

The all-aluminum vessel was built at Erie, Pennsylvania in 1961 in the Paasch Marine Services yards for the Caltex Oil Co. She sailed between Malaysia and Sumatra for several years. The Lumba Lumba gained her name from the Malay for " Over the Waves". At that time she was known as Caltex Lumba Lumba, she is 75 feet long with a beam of 18 feet and a draft of five feet. She is powered by twin diesels with 1650 h.p. The sleek vessel has a speed of 18 knots. The vessel has accommodation for 30 passengers in aircraft type accommodation. When she came back to North America the vessel was transported as deck cargo aboard the Martha Bakke to Vancouver She was then lifted into the water and docked at Vancouver Shipyards Ltd., for an extensive refit then will deliver the Lumba Lumba to Prince Rupert. I lived in Prince Rupert and traveled on this vessel a couple of times as a teenager. I have added some photos of what she looked like back in 2014. She has been scrapped as far as I know now.

I paid an absolute fortune for this one. I don't even want to think about it. But waiting around is not a great option. The Old Model Kit site has another one, too, slightly less complete. Yours is really nice, graceful and eager as they say. It is a very unique and interesting boat, has a shape you don't see, a lot of style in there. Reminds me of the hydrofoils from the era, the aluminum construction has styling cues, plus the world had a lot more style in the old days ^8-)
