Scratch Built on a Fleetscale GRP hull. Drive to all 4 props and illuminations. Built her over 20 years ago but still looks good (Motor: MFA RE 385 x 4) (ESC: Mtroniks Viper Marine 25) (8/10)

    Well done that man ๐Ÿ˜Š

What a great model and as Doug says, must weigh half a ton. Do you hire a crane to launch her? Pleased to see you are still around Doug, thought you'd gone off on a world cruise or something.

I envy your talent as a builder, scratchbuilding at it's best.๐Ÿ‘

    I heartily agree Nerys ๐Ÿ‘
I also have a soft spot for the the (much later) County class destroyers, predecessor to the Type 42's, cos I worked on a couple in Chile from time to time in the late 80s and nineties. Haven't found any kits or plans for one yet though. Maybe Deans do something?
    Cheers, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž
PS I'm still around but up to me neck (in muck an bullets๐Ÿ˜ฎ) at the moment!
More later in Night Watch! World cruise would be nice - do you have any CONNECTIONS !!๐Ÿ˜

Yes Doug, the County Class Destroyers were nice looking ships too. If I remember correctly only eight were built and four were eventually sold to Chile. A friend is selling his model of HMS Glamorgan, I have contemplated buying her.

    Hi Nerys,
Quite correct๐Ÿ‘ And one of the four sold to Chile was Glamorgan.
I worked on her, then renamed Almirante Latorre, in Valparaiso during her refit in the early 90s. Happy memories ๐Ÿ˜Š
If the model is halfway decently built GO FOR IT๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
I'm envious๐Ÿค” Post some info and pics please if you do go ahead with it.
    Cheers, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž

    First class build.
She looks really good both on the water and on the stand.
    Congratulations.
It would be good to see some internal shots of your wiring and motor set up.
    Well done.

Yes, I'd like to buy HMS Glamorgan, I've emailed the owner but haven't heard back. I've seen her sailing, she's not the best model in the world, but I'd like to have her in my fleet (Blow the Chileans). I'll keep you informed.

Good luck with the purchase Nerys ๐Ÿคž What size/scale is the model?
BTW: Don't knock the Chilean Navy๐Ÿ˜‰
From the late 80s til about 2008 I worked with all sizeable navies in S America from Columbia down to Chile and Argentina, with the exception of Peru. Didn't fancy the cholera risk in those days!
Of all I found the Armada de Chile to be the most professional, their ships much better maintained and, although not the largest (on paper๐Ÿ™„ which title went to Brazil) probably the most effective if push came to shove, which they have proven many times in their history.
Not too surprising as their origin goes back to Admiral O'Higgins and close cooperation with the RN.
I was impressed with their conversions of two of the Counties to upgrade aviation facilities to Heli Carriers. Came out of the radio room, along a transverse gangway, stepped through the W/T door at the end and found meself on the edge of a dark sea grey football field ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
My job was to update and upgrade the COMMS, esp. radio systems, HF & V/UHF to include DATA transmission, LINK 11 etc. And together with a colleague from Siemens (who became a life-long friend) to design a modern digital Tactical Command Intercom system which was integrated with the radio systems.
On my first ship survey my ghast was absolutely flabbered to discover that that the Command Intercom 'Switch' still consisted of an Able Seaman with a telephone standing in front of a huge panel of sockets on the bulkhead and an equally huge cabinet on the deck housing cables with mating plugs. Phone would ring, someone requests a connection from A to Z or to radio Y ; ABS hauls cable A from cabinet and plugs it into socket Z or Y as appropriate!!!
We replaced that with a 19" rack unit about 18" high containing an automatic ISDN switch. (Later versions were Giganet LAN) Ancient Plessey? 4" cube modular user terminals (min 4 modules per station!) were replaced with compact 1/2 19" 2 height unit Intercom Boxes providing one touch connections. Don't know what the ABS did after that๐Ÿ˜‰ Practised his snooker perhaps ๐Ÿ˜
Similar with the radio systems. I surveyed the Radio Room and adjacent HF Transmitter room. Conclusion: with modern units we don't need the extra TX room anymore (it was full of huge valve amplifiers) - but it's just about big enough for a half-size snooker table with coffee bar on the port bulkhead ๐Ÿ˜‰
The COMMS Officer kept a straight face but the Radio Techs / Operators looked happy!
Great fish restaurants in Valparaiso; tuna and swordfish fresh off the dock just across the street ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹ During lunch I used to enjoy watching the antics of the Pelicans basking on the shed roofs in the harbour. Oh Happy days ๐Ÿ˜Š
And Antarctic Crab just has to be tasted to be believed!!! Used to cram as much as poss into my case on the way home. Costs a fortune here, IF you can find it.
Have also eaten Beluga Caviar in Moscow and fresh caught salmon in Canada and Norway - sorry - very nice, but no comparison to that crab๐Ÿ˜‰

    Good Morning Fleet,
I can't remember what scale the Glamorgan is, but the model is about a metre long, I've only seen it once, a while ago. Still no reply from the owner.

I certainly wouldn't knock the Chilean Navy, loved your reminiscences not only of the ships, but of the 'seafood dishes I have eaten around the world'. Would make a far more interesting TV food series than many existing ones. I remember an intercom service in Chatham Dockyard not unlike the one you describe.

Talking of fish dishes, I had what I think was the worst fish and chips I have ever seen in a fish restaurant in Swansea the other night. I say seen, because neither of us ate much. Ugh!!!!

    Cheers, Nerys

I heard from the owner of the Glamorgan model that was for sale this morning and unfortunately, I've missed out, she's been sold. However he still has a Fire Tender available, so, I'm having a look at her next weekend.

    Cheers, Nerys

He's bringing it to the lake on Saturday, it's an unfinished project which will suit me fine but it will have to take it's turn on the shipyard. Should be number four or five. I'm also looking at his Dragonforce 65. Already have one, but if we had two, Alice and I could have private races. That needs a couple of repair jobs, new steering servo etc. We will see!
