Here's a good idea on what options expect to build with the standard 1200mm kit along an extra rake kit.
If one wants a shorter barge, you can build the 800mm one pictured on the bottom. If you want a short double rake barge, it will be 900mm with one center section.

At this time, barge kits will be limited to 1/24 scale starting with 3 kits:
Standard kit 1200mm. Consists of rake, center x 2 & rear sections.
Center kit 400mm. Used for longer or double ender barge.
Rake kit 250mm. Used to make double ender.
Kits will be ready to ship next week so if anyone is interested send me a PM for more details to join the group buy. After that, will be available on Aliexpress & eBay at double or more the price.

This new photo of Ken's build begs the question of what do old towboats & beautiful women have in common?
Perhaps its just me, but I have always thought the best view is always from the stern. ๐

Howdy gents!
Certainly no language issue with Ken as he speaks the King's language probably better than I do thanks to my West Virginia upbringing.๐
I've forwarded the site to him but you'll find him on several scale model boat groups on Facebook. Same goes for Cactus RC who makes the Juanita & others kid I've had him develop.

Yes, I have a high res copy of the same photo when Juanita was with her original owner. Not sure of the exact year but that undoubtedly was taken at the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta. Given there is a skiff on the weather deck, I would presume that she had one at some point of her long career.

As mentioned earlier in the Juanita kit thread, several 1/24 barge kits are currently under development based on common steel barges used on US inland rivers.
Both open hopper and deck barges are planned & these will be laser cut ply with deck hardware. Bolt-through bitts, cleats & kevels will be offered to afford enough strength for towing. We are currently working with a foundry to see if cost wise, can offer in cast brass. Fallback solution will be ABS or PETG 3DP parts with threaded rod epoxied in place.
Additional detail parts are under development for the deck barge for those who want to build a fuel barge or work barge with deck house & crane.
To allow some flexibility in size, the kit will be modular with front, center & rear segments so you can chose to build either 120, 140 or 160cm (47, 55 or 63") LOA depending on your choice of center sections to use.
Will post design renders and more details as they come. Scheduled release is planned late this month & as with the earlier paddler kits, I'll be organizing a group buy before the kits hit the agents on Aliexpress & eBay.

Love the Aussie paddlers - they are quite the eccentric lot compared to those I'm familiar with from the States.
Would enjoy seeing a separate thread devoted to the Murray River boats. Have considered developing a kit but now sure how well received they'd be.
I've been a member on Paddleducks for years but hadn't seen much traffic recently.

Having lived over the years in Tampa, Pensacola & Jacksonville, am well familiar with those Florida storms. Luckily, I dodged my share but still remember what the Panhandle looked like after Opel hit in 1995.
Sadly, I would not get any hopes up that additional FEMA or other funding will come from "cutting waste" - what we are witnessing now are nothing more than distractions while laying the groundwork for a massive tax dodge that our children & grandchildren will be stuck with for years to come. Senseless, if you ask me & I'm an old school conservative who is still shaking my head as to how we got here since 2015.
Back to model boats. They are certainly more fun to think about & build. ๐

Hi Michel,
Looks very nice!
I've been working with Sense Hobby to have them add marine diesel that would be appropriate for a towboat like Juanita as well paddlewheel smashing sounds into their catalog. I just spoke with one of their principals yesterday so guess sounds should be available next month.
Here's their website & you'll find a number of dealers in the EU.
http://www.sensehobby.com
In addition to the sound module tied in with the ESC, I am going to add another channel for calliope music that will play from a separate mp3 player & speakers. Might be a tight fit inside Juanita but am certain you will not have any problems with space to do whatever you want with sound or smoke.

Just learned of several other Beiyang Fleet warships that Cactus is planning to develop after the release of Zhiyuan.
Jiyuan (Chi Yuan) & Guangyi, were protected cruisers built in Germany by AG Vulcan Stettin for the Qing Dynasty. Drawings shown are of Jiyuan & both original and late versions of Guang Yi.
Will update more details as I come across them.

Agreed, far too few for such an influential period. Have seen several build threads on RC Groups.
Here's a link to Pat's thread on the Yorktown class & I see he's posting his work on Facebook, too.

๐ Pre-Dreadnought Era Models

For those who appreciate the pre-dreadnought era as navies transitioned from sail to steam, there are several projects underway on opposite sides of the pond - the Pacific, in this case - that should be of interest.
Cactus RC, who I have cooperated with to develop the Juanita & Major sternwheeler kits, is currently working on a 1/48 scale kit of the Chinese Zhiyuan (CHIH YUAN) built in 1887 by Armstrong & Mitchel. Zhiyuan was sunk in the Battle of the Yalu River in 1894 by IJN Yoshino, also of the same yard.
Kit will come with 3DP hull, ABS, brass, wood deck, photo etch & resin parts plus running gear with an expected release mid-year. With an overall build length of 5', will make a nice looking model on the water. He plans to offer both a full kit with PETG hull as well offer STL files w/detail kit to finish to save on S&H. Will post more details as he progresses on this project.
Pat Matthews who is well known in the modeling community, is in the midst of drafting plans for a USN Yorktown class gunboat which saw service in the Pacific. Three ships of this class were built & served from 1889-1919.
Given his past work, Pat be posting his work for open source use as he for starts his future build.

๐ 1/24 Juanita Sternwheeler Towboat Kit Interest

I wanted to thank all who expressed interest in the kit. Juanita was a fun kit to develop & get into the market for folks who appreciate these old sternwheeler towboats I grew up with in the States.
This will be my final post on this kit since it is no longer part of my domain after the initial group buy & is now available for sale on eBay.
We are developing several 1/24 scale barge kits due for release late March that will include both deck and open hopper barge for carrying bulk cargo such as coal or sand. I will post a new thread on that once we finalize details & I have photos to share.
Lastly, I can announce now that our next paddler kit will be Major in the same scale in her original late 1920s appearance. Release date has not yet been set but expect it will be later this year once several other projects Cactus RC is currently involved are finished.
Cheers!

Michel,
I'm 1/4 Swiss if you count my ancestry of a hodgepodge of English, Dutch, Swiss & Welsh (the latter is never considered English) but have never heard of "gruffty". My youngest will love calling me this instead of baba. ๐
Love your discourse on what is valuable when it relates to the meaning of a true life. We all need to do a better job at following this important creed. Life is too short.

No need to cut any frames given the available space inside the hull.
Battery for the proto sample is placed underneath the pilothouse while ESC & radio receiver is immediately aft of this in the next frame.
There is plenty of space to add sound & smoke modules. We didn't assign any trays for these so that's up to the builder to do as they see fit.

Thanks again for your kind words. Developing these old towboats from my home states into kits is something I enjoy doing. The quality & follow up communication comes with the territory since it is the minimum what I would expect if I was the customer.
