Picked up this box of scrap.
Was able to fabricate the skeleton from the patterns of leftover scrap

When I do my planking I start in the center and work outward equally. Maybe itโ€™s because I do the yin/yang thing (need more balance in life). But it works for me.

    Thanks for the feedback, Gillman,
This thing is a walk in the Park compared to my Typhoon.
The Typhoon had Mahogany Planks 1/8 wide.
Each plank had to be tapered and edge set. Hard to hide flaws in brightwork.
Since the 44" is painted I will glass the hull, and coat the inside with penetrating epoxy, as i did with my Typhoon.
The old saying in the Boat Yard was "Putty and Paint Makes them what they Ain't"๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚
And you are right, whether planking a full sized boat or model , you have to plank both sides at a time to avoid distortion.
Did you build the 44', I would love to see pics.

The strip planking will take up most of your building time. Just do one plank at a time on either side so the frame doesn't get skewed or twisted. Use 1/8" x 1/2" balsa wood. Once it is all planked, epoxy the inside of the hull, let it try, then sand the outside smooth. I have built several.

Nice find- those classic 44 footers were great here in Atlantic Canada also, having an enclosed wheelhouse here.
If anyone was interested in building a large version of these cutters, I have a mold to lay up a 44" (1:12 scale) hull.

Good thinking Trev, I bet most people throw those handy internal 'profiles' away without thinking! ( I still have a bunch from old kit planes) At least it's a good start.๐Ÿ‘

    Planking progressing.
I am tapering each plank to avoid "shorts". Not necessary but good practice for me on my next build, Cris Craft Triple Cockpit Barrel Back Runabout. Since the 44 is going to be glassed and painted I can get away with murder.๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
I am using CA as it speeds production all I have to do is hold the plank in position for a few minutes and it is set. That is what I did with the Typhoon. you can't pin Mahogany planking, it will show in the finish.
I am developing quite an affinity to the 44 after learning some of it's history. especially the tragic demise of 44363.

    Hi Martin,
You are right. Initially it seems daunting but when you get into it is rewarding. Although I have to be in the mood, no other pressing matters to distract me. Sometimes only a couple of planks then I have to stop. this is especially true when the final planking of Mahogany as on the Typhoon, no hiding the mistakes๐Ÿ˜ญ.

    Hi Trev,
I found planking a nightmare when i first started but once you get the hang of it, it can be very rewarding altho time consuming.
    Keep up the good work.

Great comment on planking, which I'm currently doing on my Seguin Steam Tugboat (Blue Jacket, Inc. of Searsport, ME). Grew up at New York Harbor (Staten Island). Seguin actually worked there for part of its life.
First plank on frame from kit for me.

65 years ago, did plank on frame of my own design cabin cruiser, powered
by my still owned Atwood .049 nitro+
powered outboard motor. My R/C was
27.25 single channel from Citizen kit.
    Huge expensive batteries.
Was large enough to run in salt water bay off Staten Island, on glassy
    calm day ๐Ÿ˜Š. Much funโ€ผ๏ธ

So, mates, I haven't been lollygagging with regard to the 44'
She is basically assembled; she just needs Putty and Paint to make her what she ain't.
Then to propulsion, twin motors, direct drive (no reduction gears) provided by Mack Products in NJ in the US.
    Then of course trimming out.
Yes, I am down in the dungeon, my shop, my cellar of my 200-year-old house, ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
Nothing fancy here just the basics Mam. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
But it is nice and cool.
Another episode soon to be seen/heard on your favorite channel (here of course)

One application of epoxy and microballons.
After sanding, applied glazing putty to the obvious problem areas.
Next a coat of primer to disclose the not so obvious problem areas.
Then another application of glazing putty, sanding and the beat goes on---
