Expert Advise Required - Swamp Boat Refit

    Good Morning Shipmates

Took my newly aquired swamp boat (second user) for a test yesterday - unfortunately it did not go well so some advise needed.

The problem - if chugging along at half power things are great but the boat is a little slow - so I increase the throttle and affter a couple of seconds the motor cuts out :-( . This is easily reset by just giving it a little kick astern. On trying againg exactly the same thing happens everytime.

Hardware - The Speed controller is as in the picture (unfortunately I have no knowledge of these as on my standard models i use either Mtronics or FTX ESC's) - I am using a NiMh battery rated at 7.2v 8000mah (sourced from Aliexpress) - so far I have avoided LiPo batteries - as I have a collegue that has had two workshops burnt to the ground with Lipo batteries although I have no more details than that.

My thoughs - Either the ESC is naff or there is a problem using a NIMh battery with the ESC/Motor combination - what are your thoughts - I dont know where I could source another ESC in the UK and how expensive it would be - I dont want to spend a fortune as I cant think of where I would use another ESc of this type. As regards Lipo batteries as I said so far I have avoided the due to the fact they are expensive and I would need to buy a new Lipo charger again an expensive option in the UK but this could be used in other models.

Anyway guys what are your thoughts, any advise appreciated.

    Have a good weekend everyone

    Pat

Hi Pat, it could be a simple problem. My first thooughts would be that as you increase the esc speed the power needed by the motor drops the voltage from the battery and this cuts out the BEC receiver voltage to turn it off. If the set up works with a smaller motor then that's it. You may have an old battery or a too low capacity one for the current needed for the battery.

Another possible solution is to power the receiver with a separate battery, remembering to disconnect the red wire in the esc. The easy way to do this is to use an extra servo lead and cut the red wire and connect the esc to the extension lead and then into the rx.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
I've Seen this before. When you Open the throttle this increases the amp, the battery can't deliver, the voltage goes down. Because of Low voltage the esc shuts down.

    Sorry Pat,

I first replied to your question before looking at your photo of the ESC that you are using.

I have modified my reply since to be more appropriate, but fitting a large capacity Cap could still help?

    Hi Bob

Thanks for the reply - would be noce if its a cheap fix as if I have to replace the Esc or by some Lipo's it could be expensive and I only brought it as a little bit of fun so I dont know if I would spend a lot of money to sort the problem out. I will give your idea a go when I get chance.

    Many thanks

    Pat

It was nice watching you drive your swamp buggy around the club lake yesterday Pat - it reminded me of the basic ones that I used to make when I was much younger and spent many enjoyable hours running them.

Mine were home made and powered by the Cox 049 glow engines - the type that came with a built-in fuel tank - (making them easy to mount).

The water cooled ESC that you are using is the same type that I often choose to use on my classic model power boats - albeit mine all have a higher capacity (180amp on my Rapier).

Maybe you need an ESC with a slightly higher capacity to feed the motor as it draws more current at higher speeds?

โ€ฆ..and maybe you donโ€™t need a water cooled ESC either?

Basic ESC are quite inexpensive, and I may have some spare from my Thursday night 1/12 car racing exploits.

If you havenโ€™t cured it by the time I go home and back next time, I will bring one with me for you to try.

I also have other larger types from my scale tug days that have bigger capacity and may be more suitable?

Next time I see you I will take a look with you to see if I have anything that can help?

    Bob.
