As Dave correctly pointed out, there are different materials and styles of thrust washers. As you have not indicated what the application is, we can only give general guideance. The requirements of scale models is quite different than say gas or high speed electric monos and hydros. Those will often require and use three part caged ball bearings. On this side of the pond Octura came out with those first,( i am dating myself) but here are quite a few available brands now.

Hi Maverick
I use brass or stainless steel but on a scale model Nylon would be ok.
As ToraDog says they are there to protect the prop and UJ but also to protect the motor. When going forward the prop shaft is pushed against the end of the proptube and will also push the motor shaft if not supported. The opposite happens in reverse so the washer acts as a cushion at both ends of the prop shaft. The bearings in motors are designed to support the rotating prop shaft and have little or no support in the horizontal plane.

I supply stock 12" length Shafts with ShaftTube, plus custom make any length needed, threaded for 4mm, 5mm, and 3/16" prop threads.
My shaft lengths are measured in overall length.

I am assuming that you are asking about the washers...? they should fit the shaft, ie, 1/8th " shaft get a 1/8th" washer. The washer should be the sacrificial piece so that your prop does not suffer wear, likewise the u-joint and or shaft lock/reverse thrust bearing on the inside should be protected from wear as well. Personally, and this is because my shaft do not turn at really high rpms, but do bear significant thrust loads, I use nylon washers. Cheap and easy to replace. others will have their own solutions so you should continue to ask around and find what suits your needs the best.

How big and what are they made of please?

Great point Dave, I missed that. I put a thrust washer behind my props on large models as well.

Agree and don't forget the thrust washers between the prop and shaft and u-joint and shaft.

Kinda, sorta, yup. The easiest way to measure it is to mount, even temorarily, your motor with it's u-joint in place. Then, measure from the prop, as previously mentioned to the inside of the u-joint.😀
PS: measure three times, cut the shaft once.........don't be like me and buy extra shafts🤣

So basically, the case runs from the prop to just into engine Bay, and so long as the shaft is long enough to go from the prop to the universal joint leaving some exposed is correct.🤔

Well, no. The required length would include that part of the shaft that is inserted into the propellor, extending thru the keel into the engine compartment, and further extending onwards to and into the universal joint, figuring that the U-joint is properly positioned relative to the engine/motor mounted position. I hope that makes sense.

Is a required propeller shaft length, measured from the actual propeller to where it enters the engine Bay having passed through the keel.🤔
