I have used Callie as well for my boat names. I did have a gal in Florida who did the blinds printed to clear plastic. She is no longer. I was going to make my own by using pinstripe on the lexan to size.

Commodore! Callie did these off of my art template. She is the greatest!!! And each window pre-cut to boot! She also knocked out a new set of Caltex decals for the kit for me as well. Couldn’t get along without her of late. I am happy that she has caught on big-time with the r/c airplane crowd. 👍
As for the radar, I have three versions that I’m testing. Pix will follow on those. It’s a grand experiment, but am trying to borrow/kitbash some age appropriate radomes from other kits to see which will work best. Stay tuned! 😉

Hello JumpUgli! Hi all,
What a cool idea with the window blinds! Now my supplier has something to design again. . This time she has to find the material herself and submit a test. That's what you call teamwork.

Thank you all for all the great ideas! 👍👍👍

Having the windows printed was good idea, I like it. Solves 2 problems, appearance and waterproofing. I use a service called Callie Graphics for things I want printed. They are sympathetic to the needs of model builders, inexpensive and easy to work with. I know they can duplicate the original Caltex logo for the stack, if you would like. Soon I will post some pictures of the PCF now with graphics installed

I don't see the custom radar. I was hoping you wouldn't use that silly thing that came in the original kit

A bit more progress. Gingerbread, decals, custom radar, ape-winch, and railings still to be added, plus rest of the crew. Running gear and electronics installed for bathtub ballast test next week. Window treatments applied. Yes, I had decals made as I was way too concerned about water issues on the lake this Spring.

Captain and 1st Mate taking in the view. Just playing around in the shop as I tore my meniscus ripping out my old porch deck. I think when all is said and done gingerbread work, correcting mistakes and weathering the Lumba will take quite a bit of time, but I have all winter. The porch won't wait. My wife says I look like Captain Ahab hobbling about the place. Sheesh! But, I guess if I look like Gregory Peck that's ok? 😂

Hi Jumpugly... sorry I am a weekend late. These were done many years ago. So it was just plastic that was laying around. I bit of black tape cut to accent them. Now I use the elastic or ribbon (last pic in my CC 63) you can buy in craft stores, etc.

Moving along...a weekend of painting in the garage with (thankfully) clear dry weather I must offer a "shout out" of thanks to Brightwork: the Krylon Fusion worked beautifully! It dried super glossy and hard as stone.

Although halfway through the application I noticed some of those "unforgivable" mistakes in my fiberglass application. So, I hit the brakes, wet sanded them out, and reapplied the Fusion paint without any trouble, further recriminations, or throwing myself in front of the local train to Grand Central Station. There are mistakes, but will quietly put them in the "forgivable" box. 😂

Also my 1:24 merchant marine figures arrived from Spain and although they may not be 100% accurate for a crew, their scale is spot on. I'll put a helmsman in the pilot house for sure. But, that's a long way off.
There is still much to do. 😊😉

I do like the Krylon Fusion paints! Thanks so much for the tip! And you know what…from past r/c car experience the Fusion paints could not be removed by the venerable paint remover ScaleCoat! I will hit the hardware store tomorrow for sure.
Awesome running gear set-up and that’s some ballast you have in there. 😉

PAINT..... Jumpugly. I recommend very deeply you use "Krylon" fusion paint. It is primer in one. The colour which is perfect for the Lumba Lumba (although I did not paint mine with it back in the day... thinking it needs a redo after all these years. ) is Krylon Dover White Gloss. I paint my CC's with that. It doesn't chip and bonds very well.

Here is a pic of my running gear. Original motor, but new sound module lighting and ESC

Hello Friends!
Thank you for your support and kind words!!! They are an inspiration!

Here's some pix and history...

Alessandro, I am still trial fitting my drive gear, but I am using almost all of the running gear from a destroyed Kyosho Viper that was split stem to stern. I found it laying at a local Salvation Army store and paid $5 for it, if memory serves. To me it looked like the original owner ran it once and crashed it into some sort of solid object; dock, abutment, or rock, whatever. But, all the gear was pristine and I always liked the tub set-up of the Viper (as I already own one) so I just transplanted it into the Lumba. The only difference is that I dropped the Kyosho LeMans racing motor for an 80T 540 on advice from Rod C. as I just want to cruise it on the lake.

Many thanks in advance to Brightwork for the window help!!!
Your Sport Fisherman is GORGEOUS!!!!
As for that kit, it was a high water mark for Lindberg and sadly does not look like it will ever be reproduced as the hull mold was destroyed decades ago in some sort of inventory move and subsequently packed away and lost, possibly trashed. A gentleman from Revell mentioned this to me years ago at an IPMS show as I was researching another lost "Holy Grail" kit:
the 1/8th scale McLaren M23 by Entex that James Hunt drove to the F1 WDC in 1976. Another modeling mystery that remains unsolved. it seems that Revell purchased the molds for both the M23 and the Lotus 72D, but only received the Lotus from Entex and the M23 was lost in shipping. The mind boggles. BTW: the M23 can go for almost $2000. Sheesh!

As for the Chris Craft, I went a bit crazy on the flying bridges for Marlin fishing, but my dad had a buddy who had a CC Fisherman and it was set up in a similar fashion. I have another that one is unbuilt, but damaged in an awful house fire in 2010. Not by the flames, but by fire hose water damage. I lost about 30 kits, planes, cars and boats (including an original Marx Chris Craft Constellation). Uggh! Someday I'll salvage my extra Sport Fisherman...I think. However, it can still be found on ebay from time to time.

As for my Lumba...trying to make a proper decision on the paint I'll use. I am leaning towards a Rustoleum rattle can paint....we'll see.
More to follow!

Well, here she is in primer. Mistakes, both forgivable and unforgivable have come forth. But, nothing that I would put in a box and shelve for a decade or two. 😉 So I forge ahead.
Electronics and drive system bench tested. Just building a cradle in the hull for the running gear next. More sanding and finish coats before a bathtub test for ballasting. Windows, figures, and pilot house details are still down the road. Thank God for Shapeways! More to follow! Honestly, just love stealing away to build.

Brightwork! The very thought occurred to me last night, but I failed to follow through. Of course, when the primer goes on all the remaining issues will spring forward. I learned the painting trade from my Grandfather when I was a kid and the darker the color the easier to highlight a bad spackling job. I do hope when the white finish coat is applied the "issues" will fade. You live and learn. 😉

Positive progress.
After a day of sanding outdoors with gloves and mask I was able to even some of the rough spots with the main fiberglass application. After tossing all my clothes in the washer machine and a shower I rubbed down the hull with some denatured alcohol to remove any trace of dust and applied a top coat of finishing resin with a VERY stiff brush to keep the top coat thin. After overnight curing I was happy to find that the majority of my (somewhat) heavy-handed fiber glass application had eased up and evened out. Now it's just a matter of a light sanding and then primer. Inching our way towards greatness. 😂😉

Hi Alessandro! Honestly, it’s a good question. A large part of my using fiberglass is for strength as this kit’s balsa planking is flimsy compared to what I like best: strip basswood. But, the strip basswood idea would have taken quite a while to apply on this monster, plus a bit expensive. I also have a cabin on a lake so I plan to have this boat on the water quite a bit so a fiberglass outer hull appealed to me.
However, when I got up this morning after a night of curing I realized that maybe a second coat of Z-POXY finishing resin would have been ok. As it stands now I will sand the high spots and brush on one more thin layer of finishing resin, rough that up and prime and paint. 😉

Hello Jumpugly.

Even if you haven't used fiberglass for a long time you're doing very well, great job.

Why do you use fiberglass and not other types of resins? Is it an economic question (in any case an aspect to take into consideration) or is it a technical choice?

A glassed-up with nowhere to go! Fiberglass applied to hull. I have not applied fiberglass to anything since 1983. Far from perfect in my book, but workable. Let the sanding begin! 😜

I must post a correction. The photos below that I posted of a finished Lumba-Lumba where actually from BRIGHTWORK's build and not Dumaspittman's. This was a foolish error on my part. Especially considering that this build by Brightwork is my inspiration and quite frankly, my pictorial instruction manual.

Commodore!
Great stuff and very helpful!
I did in fact make a window template and then transferred it onto a thin piece of illustration board which I used to mark up the hull. At this point I am torn about cutting them out and putting window treatments in like BRIGHTWORK did on Lumba. (pic attached). He did a novel thing and encircled the window frames with styrene strip so they look perfect. I learn a ton from the guys on this site especially being primarily a airplane and car guy.
Thanks for sharing! It is a great looking kit, but like all Sterling kits, at times I wake up screaming at night. 😂😂😂

The Sterling Lumba Lumba (porpoise, in Malay, the language of Singapore) was the second RC model I built. That was a long time ago, probably 60 years! I still remember it well. Years later, I took the boat from Singapore to Macao, I half expected to see the Lumba Lumba. They speak Portugese in Macao.

Yes, lots crushed and mushy balsa wood. Also had a few vacuum formed parts which if you have them are likely dried up and cracking. It had very high freeboard which made it very tippy Mine was powered by a single giant cube looking Pitman motor and a small liquid filled lead acid battery which was common at the time. It was good looking but not a great running boat. Nice to see it is still around. Sterling, the company that made the kit was Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which is near where I currently live. Many great model boat manufacturers have come and gone. No one ever made the Lumba Lumba again.

I think the sticking point for your build are the windows in side. They are difficult to get right. You can, of course, just paint them on. I would be tempted to build a template to cut them. You could also build a separate plywood strip outside the model then cut that entire section out and replace it with pre-cut insert.

Years ago I saw someone build this boat and power it with 90 size nitro airplane motor. Then the old Lumba Lumba could really go!😂🤣😂😁.
It was a little too much, in terms of scale speed I think it hit Mach 3.

It's a great build. I am looking forward to seeing it run.

Lucky you Jumpugly that you have plenty of space.
I had to choose metals or alloys with a very high specific weight.
When ordering I had to choose between brass, lead or gold.
Nobody (I repeat no one) wanted to give me gold (the heaviest of the three), hahahaha.
I ended up buying brass.

Most of my comments are tongue-in-cheek in my last post. In the past I have taken other Sterling kits like this and tossed most of the wood out of the window and substituted my own. This time around I chose to wrestle with what came in the box. 1/8th thick 3” x 36” hunks of balsa create their own set of problems to warp. 😂

Hello Jumpugly.

The work is progressing very well.

I no longer use hot water or steam to bend the slats but instead use pliers created specifically for the purpose. If you don't know it, I'll show you what it looks like.

What worries you about ballast? Can I help you?

Honestly Ed, it's been a brutal build. The instructions are lacking, the usual die-crushing, tons of hot water and steam warping exercises, but once she's formed up a bit, it's a good looking boat. I am a bit concerned about balance and ballast layout. Will go to the local gym and buy some dumbbells. 😂😂😂😂😂. It'll be an adventure all the way to the finish.

Always good to have the "6-Foot Man" to assist in scale. In this case checking the actual scale of this ship through the Scale Converter and then printing a 73mm 1:24th 6 foot man to match. Looks good to me. This will assist in purchasing a 3D printed crew for the Lumba-Lumba from a great sculptor I came across who works in multiple scales. Oh, and added some trim and a quick coat of finish resin for another round of sanding.
BTW: Here's my favorite online tool. 😊😊. https://www.ginifab.com/feeds/cm_to_inch/scale_converter.html
