Back out of the "Zen" woods yesterday and in the Lake. I put another (much needed) two pounds of ballast in my old Sterling Caltex Lumba Lumba and put her through her paces. Still a bit "high," but I am very happy with the results. I hope to move the C-2 Freighter up here soon.

(Re: Pitman)

Are you kidding - back in my day, Pittmans were Cadillacs, and I could only afford Volkswagens! 🙄

Also will put this old Kyosho Viper through her paces that I restored as a side project this winter. The "Hardee's" paint scheme is a one-off and a good reason to use an old set of r/c car decals I had laying about in my decal stash. 😂

Yes, Good idea, definitely needs some railings on upper deck. When I build a model I don’t always adhere to the plans. I make whatever changes I like to please me.

Remember I said I remember building the Lumba Lumba many, many, many, many years ago ago.I looked around and still have the motor that was in it. Anybody remember these motors from Pitman? Ancient history

Brightwork!!!!!!!!!! These are absolutely Astounding!!!

Notice that the new owners in BC did the one thing that I fretted over more than anything during the build: they put RAILINGS all over the aft deck behind the stack! I did put a series of diamond plate catwalks off the rear hatch (see below), because I couldn't get past the fact that the folks at Caltex were ok with a 35 foot deck with no rails in heavy seas. When I decide to retro fit her that's the first thing that's going on and these two posts are invaluable.

Thank you! 👍😊

There are Bridges and Bridges JP😉
I even looked on Google Earth for a bridge over the Strait of Malacca🤔 like the Great Belt Bridge between East and West Denmark or the Rio-Niterói bridge spanning the Guanabara Bay in Brazil😁 Got stuck on that bridge for over an hour one evening, on the way back to Rio from a day working at the Submarine base in Niterói.☹️😠

😎

Perhaps riding the rail in front if the pilot house would be more of a thrill ride RN! Change noted. 😉😊

Good Lord Brightwork!!!!! You're right! But, somehow not surprised that you'd know! A ride on the rail across the Straits of Malacca between Singapore and Dumai, Indonesia must have been a white knuckler! 👍😉

Jumpugly....

The real Lumba Lumba was very tippy as well. She really wasn't a great sea boat.

I like these courageous Jumpugly acts, but there is no point in risking a beautiful model without precautions.
You are a smart guy and you will have already thought about it.
When I tested my models in a very large lake many thought I was crazy because it was very large (I could no longer see the model well) and very deep.
However, I could count on the auxiliary engine and had a rowing dinghy at my disposal.
If you go out, make sure that there is wind for at least two or three hours by looking at the weather forecast, but if you have trusted friends who can help you, it's better.
I hope you will make more videos.
These long navigations are too interesting for me. I love them. As you say, these are challenges that must be faced.

No worries Commodore! I will trail behind in my old bass boat! I don’t think she’ll make the two miles. A quarter mile would be ok with me.

As far as the Lumba is concerned, another pound or even two may be in the offing. And yes, she does stand tall and I have seen them with an auxiliary keel skeg installed. For a second i thought she’d heel over, but she regained her composure. 😉

That’s a nice sailboat. You are a brave man. Two miles seems pretty far for a solo voyage.

It’s been years but I seem to remember the Lumba Lumba was kinda top heavy because of high freeboard and leaned a lot in turns but was actually stable.

Take lots of pictures we all wanna see

Thank you for your kind words Alessandro! An increase in weight may definitely be on order, but I will do some more sea trials as soon as I return to the lake. If the lake is calm I will put the Lumba through some speed runs and see how she does.
We have a cabin there; it's always a joy to come to on the weekends.

As an aside (and just for grins) I will also launch this very old Sterling "king Fish" as a free sailer that I just completed. In a good breeze I would love to see if she can make the 2 miles down the lake on her own. I will alert my neighbors if I loose sight of her. I love a challenge...from time to time!

Hi Jumpugly, finally the first "bath".
You did a great job, congratulations.
The navigation is very good. Considering it's the first, it's excellent. If you want you can increase the weight slightly, but that's fine too.
I also really like the place where you sailed your RC model, it's wonderful.

Still will have some things to sort (trim and ballast etc), but she's high and dry after her first paces on the lake. A really sharp looking, albeit ancient, kit. I think I put about 100 hours into the build and thrilled she did ok on her first time out. 😊

Finally managed my ballast test in an old tub I'm re-finishing at my son's place. I was thrilled with the outcome. Even without the iron pipe bits she sat perfectly. Dang! I wish this winter will come to an end so I can get to the lake! 😜

Big Jumpugly.
As a static display model it is excellent but now I would like to see it in the water. See how it sails and hear the sound.
I hope you will make videos of the navigation.
Of course it will be better to wait until the temperatures rise and the weather is good.

I will report back with ballast results and the usual questions.😉

Thanks Barry! 😉 My workshop looks more and more like a hobby store each year as I still tend to collect. My build stash is two boats and a 1/9th scale Sopwith Triplane deep now. Yow!
In general I will add rust here-and-there and some green patina for weathering. I will go easy with this boat and will send along some progress pix for sure. 😀

Beautiful job! It looks pristine and ready for its first shakedown cruise.
I enjoyed looking at the pictures and seeing you have managed to have your other projects displayed and the workshop looks good.
After you weather it show us some more pictures.
I have a dedicated 20'x22' workshop that looks like a tornado came through and left all the carnage and dust.

Other than a bit of weathering, aft railings (maybe), and some rigging line I'm in the home stretch. Overall pleased with the build despite some errors and difficulties, but you live and learn. Still behind on ballast testing, but either way I hope the next pictures will be taken on the water this Spring! And a big shout out to my friends here on Model-Boats for the practical insight, kind words, and never ending encouragement! It's made this particular build very fulfilling. 👍❤️

Hi Jumpugly

This may be the answer to your railing dilemma. Plastruct makes all kinds of railings. You can probably buy their stuff through Amazon or eBay, If you don't find an exact match, I won't tell anyone😋

I found this old picture of the Lumba Lumba which I believe was taken in Canada. Maybe you've seen it before, it may help you decide on the radar. Aside from that I vote for #1 as it is the simplest

Radar, Radar, Radar on the brain! I am posting 3 1960's style radar options for the Lumba Lumba. I am curious which one you guys like. 😉
Believe it or not, one of them is the same size as the really awful one they want you to assemble for the kit.

I purposely took a wider shot as not to focus entirely on the pilot house roof. BTW: I am still working on the ape-winch and Danforth Anchor davit slide. It's just a bit of modernization for the old Lumba. 😊
