Sterling Lumba-Lumba

Hi Alessandro. In this case I wanted to stay true to what came with the kit. But, truth be told, over the years I have substituted basswood strips for hull planking on my other Sterling Model kits. Considering the size of this kit I opted not to spend more money than necessary on a hull that will be glassed and painted. 😉

Hi jumpugly.

Nice image but you could put more.

A curiosity. Why do you use balsa wood? You're not the first one I've seen on this forum using this very light wood.
If it had been a plane I wouldn't have even asked you.
Anyway, good continuation.

Back in the shop and roughing in the skin. As per usual with Sterling I had to do some fancy footwork with forming the balsa planks. At one point I almost dropped the 3" wide planks in favor of something more manageable, but stuck it out all the same. Now to the garage for sanding this monster before I go down the fiber glass road and running gear test fitting. And a big shout out to Rod and Dumaspittman for the motor advice. More to follow! 😉

Hey There Dumaspittman!
I hope all is well on your end!
All good here and moving along, albeit slowly, on my Lumba. I was wondering if you could advise me on an appropriate motor for a single screw set-up on this kit. Also, how much ballast did you have to go with. A finished weight would also be a huge help. Any advice is great appreciated.

Jumpugly,
It's always good to have a project on the bench waiting on you. I have too many it seems!
I like the D7, I used to fly one of those. Nice job on the lozenge design!

Hi, jumpugly, I wanted to take a good snap of the state of the art of my CTLL. I will post more things now that you are building one. I am sure yours will turn out better than mine, and I am chuffed at how it came out, considering all things. I still am looking forward to running the measured mile, but I have all the internals set up, huge motors, nice batteries, it's all pretty skookum thanks to some help I got here on the site on batteries. Good luck, I look forward to seeing how she builds! I think it's such a beautiful model! One of the most interesting I have ever seen.

Hey there Dumaspittman!
Thanks for touching base! I will probably go single screw electric just for messing about on the lake. I have an old Kyosho Viper basket-case that I may cannibalize for motor and gear. Although I like your double-up as the boat was actually built for some decent speed it seems. I promise to keep the pix coming and will touch base for advice from you and the gang! Best -- Guy

She looks good so far! I built mine last year, I will post some better pics...how are you powering yours? I put waaaaay yonder too much muscle in the engine room! I still haven't run her in the pond yet, I will post a video, though. Have fun and take lots of pictures!

At last! It's a frame up I tell ya'. 😁 Hitting the road for about 3 weeks, but wanted to lay down the keel and position the bulkheads so I can dive back in when I get back. It's a habit of mine whenever I'm away from the bench for a while. Also, added a pic of the project that held me up before jumping into The Caltex. Both old Sterling Models kits, both die-crushed all over the place, but I have a weakness for Sterling's (generally) robust construction methods. More to follow on all of this. 😉
