As I did with Annie P you could replace the stock r/c system with a 'proper' one, using small components / pieces.
My tug has been in my possession for 30 yrs and still works well.
I do not know its age when i acquired it!

This would be a great model to put in a saddle bag on your motor cycle the go sailing. Just wondering if you can run two or more of these boats together with out any radio interfearance

Small boat @ small size = tiny model. Range 50m. 9 inches (230mm) long. Not my slice of cake. (My opinion.)
