Well done EdW first to get it right - of course it does not work everywhere - the Solent spring to mind but it is a good approximation

The Rule of Twelfths applies to tidal changes which are not linear but follow a sine curve.
It states it changes by 1/12 in the first period, 2/12 in the second period and 3/12 in the third and fourth periods. The fifth period it reduces to 2/12 and in the sixth and final period it reduces again to 1/12.
This gives you a 1-2-3-3-2-1 giving you a total of 12.
