Hello Shipmates and budding Master Mind Winners

Here are the answers

Part 1

1. Bumkins are structure that protrude normally from the stern of a sailing ship and where used to attach either running or stand ring to - today many modern sailing ships use them to hang the sea boat from ready for immediate use.

2. A fluke is the flat, triangular-shaped parts that dig into the seabed and provide the necessary resistance to keep the anchor from shifting or dragging.

3. A anchor stock is a bar at the top of the anchor, at right angles to the flukes at the bottom of the anchor - note not all anchors have a stock.

4. The chains are platforms on a traditional sailing ship where the shrouds are secured and indeed they were often used by leads men.

5. The Jiboom is indeed an extension to the bowsprit - used to secure the Outer Jib sails

Part 2

1. A nautical mile the the distance subtened by the arc of one minute of latitude - it distance varies the further north or south you go but is generally taken as being 6080 ft.

2. One tenth of a nautical mile is called a cable.

3. 0 degree of Longitude is called the Greenwich meridian - in nautical navigation and sometimes the Prime meridian in land navigation/geography.

4. The difference between True North and Magnetic North is called Variation in navigation terms and Declination in atronomical term and varies all over the world.

3. A gyro compass points to True North.

Who found those answer interesting ?

Well done to all those that take part

In that case, stock is the main body of an anchor...
If it don't fit, use a hammer to make it fit....

Bumpkins, aka dolphin striker, a short "mast" (for want of a better word) at 90degrees to the bowsprit.
Flukes are the "palms" of an anchor that dig into the seabed.
A stack is either a tall funnel or a tall rock formation on coastal cliffs.
Chains are small platforms on which to stand when taking sounding and act as supports to the shrouds..
Jiboom is an extension to the bowsprit.
2. A nautical mile is around 1.5 "normal" miles and represents 1 minute of latitude.
1/10 of a nautical mile is a cable.
0 deg long is the Greenwich or Prime meridian.
Declination
Magnetic compass.
Did you "mark" the last lot?
If it don't fit, use a hammer to make it fit....

Morning Shippers

Let see if this two part question generates a little more interest - first part on ship parts and the second on navigation, so here goes:-

Part 1

1. What are Bumkins
2. What are Flukes
3. What is a Stack
4. What are the Chains
5. What is a jiboom

Part 2

1. What is the definition of the distance of 1 Nautical Mile anywhere on the Earth
2. What is the name given to 1/10 of a Nautical mile
3. What is the name given to 0 degrees Longditute.
4. What is the difference between Magnetic North and True North called.
5. What type of compass points to True North.

These questions are a lot easier than those I have been posting of late - trying to get more people to take part.

Good luck

Pat
