"The first HMS Pickle (1800) was a 10-gun topsail schooner purchased in 1800, originally named Sting, and renamed in 1802. She was present at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 (but too small to play a part in the battle itself), under the command of John Richards Lapenotiere, who was entrusted with conveying the message about the victory and the death of Lord Nelson to England. She landed in Falmouth, Cornwall, setting Lapenotiere on his historic 36-hour journey by post chaise to the Admiralty in London. The route he took was inaugurated as The Trafalgar Way in 2005. She was wrecked in 1808 off Cádiz."

I have sailed in the replica of HMS Pickle when she was based in North Wales - she sailed very well and was fast

Taranto Night! November 1940. FAA officers get absolutely legless, smash a piano up and chuck the bits out of the window. I made up a pyrotechnic firing system for part of the "entertainment" for one such event at HMS Gannet.
2, HMS Pickle, captain was named Laphroaire (I think that's how you spell it). Whereas officers have a Trafalgar Day dinner in the Wardroom, Senior Rates ( Chiefs POs and Warrant officers) have Pickle Night in the SR'S mess. I attended one at HMS Raleigh, the walls of the mess were hung with backdrops simulating the decks of HMS pickle, complete with gunports. Very sore head the next morning!
If it don't fit, use a hammer to make it fit....

Hello Shipmates

Good evening - again a two part question for you.

1. In The Royal Navy on the 21 October each year the navy Celebrates the Battle of Trafalgar, however the Fleet Air Arm celebrates a different Battle on a different date - please name the Battle and give the date.

2. Please name the ship that brought the news of the death of Admiral Lord Nelson back from Gibraltar after the Battle of Trafalgar and name the Captain of the ship, I have seen a couple of lovely RC models of this particular boat.

A simple school question

Cheers

Pat
