    Thanks Nerys,
I found the formulae to calculate C of E and am applying this to the C L R and hoping not too many changes😊

Hi Bellman, I knew the real Venta way back, soon after she was converted to a barge yacht. She was moored in Whitewall creek near my home at Lower Upnor on the Medway in the late forties.

Have you scratch built her or did you start with a hull?

Best of luck with her sail plan, if I can give you any further help, please ask.

    All the best, Nerys.

Bellman, I should have asked you what sort of barge are you building, how big etc. Thames Barges are my 'thing' so I'm always interested in other peoples'.

    Cheers, Nerys

To find the Centre of Effort of a sail, draw a line from each corner to the middle of the opposite side. Where these cross will be the C of E of the sail. Do this for each sail. I wouldn't bother with the mizzen unless she is a boomy with a big gaff mizzen. Then connect up each C of E making a triangle or quadrilateral depending on number of sails. Find centre of this. That will be the C of E of the boat. In a barge it should end up a little way abaft of the mast. In the barges I've built, I've never bothered with any of this and they sail perfectly well.I work to the old adage that if it looks right, it probably is right!

    Cheers, Nerys
