Steam launch advice

Hi Rick
Thanks for the info. I have purchased another Myford and want to also build a marine engine. Cheddars Ceramic Burners I used on a LBSC 3.5" Britannia only way I could get it to steam properly as we don't have welsh coal🤕🤕
Gonna dig around for some plans from Sarik
Cheers

Steam launch advice

Clevedon steam has been my go to for my boiler;gas tank and ceramic burner. Have had very good serves from them.
I use Steam fitting UK for piping needs
Kennions UK for globe valves. Kennions have a DIY boiler kit they sell.
Tony Green Steam supply boilers and engines.
Pendle steam boilers .
Just a few of on line steam items

Clevedon Steam took over Cheddar Models Designs👍👍 I was a model engineer but can't afford it anymore being on retirement! ( Coppers Damn Expensive) My Springbok Boiler cost me over GBP 1000.00 and that was only the boiler
Good Luck

Steam launch advice

Thanks all,

I am looking at a Krick bokrum as i dont really have building facilities to get something more elaborate. Buying second hand and fettling it ( installing new steam plant) would be perfect for me, i saw a nice example on a well known website which has a Edgar Trojan and cheddar pintail boiler etc. But was debating over the single cylinder engine, im no new comer to steam as i have had many stationary stuart engines and run a 5" loco. I have hovered over the Graham engineering twin engine kit supplied by Macc steam many times and also full boiler engine units by clevedon steam which is an oscillator twin (would prefer slide valve). I have a spare boiler which must have come out of a steam boat but this might not be good for the bokrum as its 10" long 5 diameter also its horizontal" this matched to the Graham engineering twin in some hull ? simple to build might be good.

Macc Models are a great supplier. 👍 I live only a mile from them and source most of my brass and other metal requirements from them. Being so close, I don’t even have to pay postage 😁

Sure is some of these engines can cost a bit but 'Live Steam' in the USA have some that can be machined out of standard brass etc. The two manufacturers I gave are costly but they do the boiler ceramic burners etc, want to some ideas look on the the link supplied. Edgar Westbury's plans are available from Sarik he also did a paddle steamer paddle design but it's not definitely for the faint hearted as it has paddles that feather

Thanks Ian
I think steam is a wonderful way to go in building a boat but not for everyone as there is a large output of cash. As i said in earlier post make a list of the costs for everything needed to build a steam launch. Research; Research; Research.

Hi Rick and Andy,
Rick you have it right a twin cylinder steam engine is the way to go! Stalling and hydraulic lock can be a problem on Single Cylinder I have one that always needs a flick to get it running. Suggest you look for some articles by 'Tubal Cain' ( Tom Walshaw) ex ME writer now deceased, he did quite a few stationary engines and boilers in his time. He has some books published (quite a lot actually) the best place to look for his books are Special Interest Model Books. Search the Internet as there are plenty plans around for downloading. Also look at Stuart Models Dorset and Clevedon Steam but they don't come cheap!
Good Luck

You can use a kitchen rudder with a single cylinder engine. You cab also get a Grahm twin engine and it is a complete machined kit starting at $245.00 USD. Google them up and look what they have😊 I have one that I will be running with a Wanda boiler.

Hi Andy for the steam launch I would go with a twin as it is self starting .A single needs be in the correct spot to start and if it stops on the water getting it back may cause you problems.
I have three launch's and all are twin with reversing ability.
I do have a Stuart H 10 single that I run on air it runs very well but I would not put it in a boat a little to big.
The first thing I would consider is what launch do you intend to build.
How big is the boiler.Have you looked at engines for the boat and cost.If you haven't started yet cost out the item's you will need.Boiler ,Engine ,condenser fuel tank, are your major items.

Steam launch advice

Hi All,

I am after some guidance from those with experience operating steam launches. My question is specific to an RC model that has a single slide valve steam engine. Is it a much better option to go with at least a twin for self starting abilities, or is operating a single just a matter of experience with that model to avoid stalling in open water. I guess this also depends somewhat on the location i.e. large lake or small easy accessible pond. Just really after experience of anyone with a single cylinder setup.

Thanks
Andy
