It is indeed a Gannet they run very well i have one myself, use quite a bit of oil which is a total loss system.

In addition for anyone looking to get into submarines 35/40Mhz penetrates water far better than 2.4Ghz.

I thought about using a crawler motor and ESC also as they are designed for torque and also the ESC can be set with all sorts of clever features like start mode and ramp up etc.

Agree, i wanted some wriggle room on prop experiments and to allow ballasting options to get the boat moving realistically through the water ( appearance of weight ) . As i also want duration the plan was to use 2 Yuasa 12 or 6v PB batteries Ah rating dependent on size. Having 2 allows me to use them as movable ballast with them wired in parallel. I think the difference between the 850 and 800 is the 800 provides less performance but more torque 800 at 12v 4289 RPM ( unloaded ) 850 at 12v 9778 (unloaded ). Still un-decided though so any more thoughts good or bad welcomed.

Thanks for the info it looks good but as i believe these motors can create quite a racket i think i will go back to simple and use a MFO Torpedo 800 direct drive to a 40mm 3 blade and then experiment with cheap props.

Hi All,
Having decided to build the Lesro Pilot i thought about power for it. I want a high torque setup so i can run an increased prop size and or prop pitch blade count. Lesro recommend a standard brushless setup with a 40mm 2 blade prop. I just found in my loft of goodies a Xerun V10 8.5T sensored brushless motor ( 2 pole ) with matching ESC ( quite an expensive setup intended for 1/10 RC buggies ) this motor is rated as 3940Kv with a mximum of 2s lipo. I like the thought of a sensored brushless setup for smooth startup but really not sure about this type of motors suitability, maybe running into a reduction gearbox ? MFA do a nice brushed 540 motor with 6:1 reduction gearbox attached which might be better but as i have the other kit if its suitable it would be good.

Its a nice bit of engineering and sounds brilliant, just need to find somewhere to use it now. Attached shows it without oil tube ( i remove it after running to avoid a hydraulic lock on the next run ).

The Gannet lives ran it today for the first time started very easily, i had previously tested the ignition system which gave a very strong spark after cleaning the points. Ran beautifully very quiet and low tick over, I used 1ml redex to 1 litre fuel and 5w30 oil in the oil tube which i adjusted slightly to lower the flow, nice faint blue exhaust. I used a garden sprayer manual pressurised container for water cooling just pumped through the water pickup. Think i uploaded a short video.

Thankyou all for your input, i like the varnish approach might take some effort to get a good finish but the last time i used FG i looked like i had been tarred and feathered. Looking at the Lesro kit and the excellent build blog on here the wood looks of good quality. Moving on i am not fan of boats with stern deep down and bow pointing skywards at speed so im looking to ballast the boat to try to get to the attitude i have seen in some photos of the real thing.

Looking through build blogs it looks like a common practice is to skin wooden hulled boats like the Lesro Pilot with fibre glass. I am looking at buying a Lesro pilot but not sure of my skills with glass fibre laying on compound curves etc ( maybe its time to learn ), maybe very thin cloth is forgiving ?. Are there other methods people use i.e. tissue and dope maybe ( might be the same as glass fibre ). If GF is the only real viable option do you use a single piece as far as possible to keep the surface smooth or use stripped pieces layered up.
I have used GF before on other projects but always seemed to get bubbles creases etc.
Thanks for any input

Thankyou both, i will put together a build log as i go. Additions so far will be 2x Mtronik Viper 25 brushed ESC ( prefer 2 instead of trying both motors off one ) Mtronik sound card/speaker with large diesel sound file, and a Mtronik micro switcher so the sound card can be started stopped from a transmitter channel plus one other feature i.e. horn etc.

Hi All,
I couldn't resist a Billings Smit Nederland purchase, its an unbuilt boxed kit with 2 geared motors supplied and nice brass rudders fittings kit etc from a well known website. I am now looking for a good realistic sound module and advice on paints for the Hull. Not sure if it comes with build instructions but im sure there should be blogs etc on the web if things are not obvious.
Thanks
Andy

Well that was an anti-climax, the locking nut at the engine coupler end came undone very easily which then allowed the drive shaft to be unscrewed by hand from the engine coupler and pulled out. Thanks for all your help

Thanks yes i think they are the only options to try, there is about a 2mm gap between the lock nut and brass shaft at the coupler end so its possible i can loosen there and then hopefully simply unscrew the drive from the prop end.....sounds simple but will give it a go later and see how many expletives i can get through.

Can anyone make sense of the attached photo. Have tried to diagram the drive setup possibly not very successfully. The coupling from the engine to drive shaft seems to be a rubber coupled drive. What i cant figure out is if the drive shaft can in someway be pulled out from the prop end. It might be a flexible drive shaft but no idea how this connects to the rubber engine drive unit. I guess the motor end of the drive shaft could also be threaded with the flanged nut locking the two together ?. Im not sure what the aluminium washer is for at the prop end other than some sort thrust washer which is now stuck on as somewhat mangled. Any thoughts appreciated.

As a test i cut a 6mm wide length off a leather belt to see if i could loop under the starter ring and pull it through while keeping tension on the other side. It actually works to a degree i.e. it spins over a compression stroke ( not sure if enough to start ). This might be better than a closed loop belt and an electric starter to avoid hydraulic locks bending the conrod. The engine has a quite a bit of compression which is good and turns over freely its just getting enough momentum to start to it thats going to be the trick.

I think i will pull the engine out and fettle it on the bench as there is no starter cord so need to loop something around anyway. If i can figure out how to release the drive shaft. I can start trying to undo things but dont want to be using force until i know whats what. Does the arrangement in the photos look familiar to anyone ???

Is there anyone out there that has used a PM research M8 ( v twin oscillator ) in a steam launch. They look like a good engine and reasonably priced for a self assembly kit with inbuilt forward/reverse throttle.

Thanks all,
I am looking at a Krick bokrum as i dont really have building facilities to get something more elaborate. Buying second hand and fettling it ( installing new steam plant) would be perfect for me, i saw a nice example on a well known website which has a Edgar Trojan and cheddar pintail boiler etc. But was debating over the single cylinder engine, im no new comer to steam as i have had many stationary stuart engines and run a 5" loco. I have hovered over the Graham engineering twin engine kit supplied by Macc steam many times and also full boiler engine units by clevedon steam which is an oscillator twin (would prefer slide valve). I have a spare boiler which must have come out of a steam boat but this might not be good for the bokrum as its 10" long 5 diameter also its horizontal" this matched to the Graham engineering twin in some hull ? simple to build might be good.

Hi All,
I am after some guidance from those with experience operating steam launches. My question is specific to an RC model that has a single slide valve steam engine. Is it a much better option to go with at least a twin for self starting abilities, or is operating a single just a matter of experience with that model to avoid stalling in open water. I guess this also depends somewhat on the location i.e. large lake or small easy accessible pond. Just really after experience of anyone with a single cylinder setup.
Thanks
Andy

Thanks i guess a semi synthetic starting at 5W might be a good choice seen as how i want to try to get some oil into it prior to actually starting it as i have no idea how long its been standing i.e. spin on a starter cord or something. 5W should flow easily at non running temps hopefully.

Luckily my local motor world stocks "Carlube 30 SAE mineral oil" i am never too sure if modern oils with all their Alchemy are good or bad for classic engines. The previous owner has added an after market Oil tube by the looks of it as its bigger than the ones i see on Youtube. The engine is fitted in a very well built 48" Fairey Huntsman and the installation is very good. I will post some photos soon as i can figure out how to disconnect the engine to prop drive yet.

Yes Redex still available so i will definitely be mixing a leaded batch. It might be best to use some classic SAE 30 oil i guess i.e. non of the modern additives, need to have a think about that one.

Hi all,
This is my first post so thought i would start with a tough one. I have recently purchased an RC boat ( not my first large Petrol boat) that is powered by a Gannet 15CC 4 stroke petrol engine. The engine is in good condition even the points and is correctly installed with all accompanying ancillaries. Does anyone have any information on these engines or operational manual ? I have tried google but have drawn a blank so far. From some youtube videos i think it needs SAE 30 oil and definitely leaded petrol.
Any info appreciated
