This little pond yacht was a 5th birthday present from my grandad in March 1954. Sailed regularly and is great fun. No control only luck and the wind.
In the 67 years I have owned it has had three sets of sails and been repainted only once.
Thinking about it when i was very young my Mum and Dad bought me a Yacht it was about eighteen inches or maybe a bit longer it had a steel hull and bulb keel and a wooden deck with cloth sails, i lived in London then and use to sail on Battersea Park Boating lake, I lost it couple of times and had to get people out in rowing boats to retrieve it for me. I later learn' t in life to take a fishing rod with me and hooked it quite a few times. Wish i still had it would be a classic now.
Hi Colin
Reminds me of my first boat acquired at about the same age as yours. Great fun to sail and plenty of exercise chasing to the opposite side of the pond. Learnt a great deal about sailing and adjusting the shrouds. Sadly mine disappeared in one of Mum's clear-outs.

I wish I still had my first boat like you Colin. Mine was a Christmas present in about 1936 I think I was only about three. She was about 12" long, painted red and named 'Britannia'. Probably had that name because 'J' class racing was the thing at that time and 'Britannia' owned by the King was a popular contestant. I sailed her on Cold Knap Lake in Barry and I am still a member of the Vale of Glamorgan club that sails there. When I think, she was just an ordinary pond yacht with no controls apart from adjustable sheets and I would let her go and have every confidence that she would go to the other side where my Uncle would turn her round and send her back. The confidence of youth !!!
What a lovely looking boat Colin, such classic and classy lines.
I love that you have such great memories attached to it as well.
Bet she looks absolutely spot on on the water ⛵
Hi Colin, I never had a sail boat when i was young but i wish i had one like yours but when i was 15 i built a drag boat powered by a diesel boat engine with no radio control and went to my local pond to try it out got it started and let go it went like the clappers but unfortunately and elderly chap had just launched a beautiful large sail boat and my boat went straight up the sails and rigging wrecking both i felt sick and after apologising to the poor chap i never built another boat until know. a little bit annoyed my Boat did not arrive today but hopefully tomorrow.🤞
That's what my modelling is all about Martin.
And hopefully those memories will be part of my grandchildren memories in the future.
It's so good that when I'm sailing, total strangers often stop and reminisce about models that they sailed with their parents as kids.
And if I offer them a go with the controller then you often see the inner child coming out.
Cheers Colin.
Not likely Martin, my mum would probably tell me off, as it was her dad that bought it for me.
I can even remember getting soaked as it was raining when I got it but me and my dad went to Abbey Park in Leicester where we lived to try it out, dad had a fishing rod with him just in case it got stuck out of reach, but not needed.
I was so happy that I had a boat of my own to sail with dad and grandad.
Still makes me smile just thinking about those great family boating days, both real and model.
Cheers Colin.
Hi Colin,
Sorry I had a senior moment as you said in the main text sailed regularly.
Have you ever been tempted to convert her to RC ?
Mind you it would probably ruin the history of this old girl.

Cheers Colin.
Do you get tempted to put her in the water again just for old time's sake ?
