These are some pics of the boat before I gave it a light restoration, hopefully I’ll get this one on the water soon.

The main characteristic of the boat is the moving helmsman. He’s on a heavy duty servo controlled via a 3 way switch on my transmitter: port, centre and starboard.

The reason why the boat isn’t on the water is that the helmsman has a wheel in each buttock to aid his movement. The tyres have perished but there is light on horizon as I’ll be at a toy fair next month where I know there will be sellers with large boxes of model tyres. Just need to take one of the old ones with me to help the rummaging for replacements.

I visited a new to me model shop, Bekra Models in Newton Abbot today, very impressed with their stock. I spotted some wheels, think they are for model aircraft and they were only a couple of mm wider in diameter than the broken buttock wheels of the helm.

This afternoon I successfully completed open buttock surgery and the operation was a success. He should tack and gybe without graunching and complaining

Duncan, you’ll find videos of them on YouTube, there are a few different variants. Think mine is about 25 years old.

I bought the boat last year in a tired condition, the helmsman’s plinth had lifted and the deck hatches were missing. When the lake used by my club opens in March I’ll get to sail it for the first time.

There’s also a model Finn dinghy with a tacking helm called a Mickey Finn, I never got on with Lasers as I’m too big, but have had several Finns over the years.

Looks great! It looks very much like a full size Laser dinghy which I used to race in my younger days! Is the helmsman weighted to give some extra leaning out leverage?
Well done conceiving this idea of a moving helmsman. I haven't seen one before so I think it is probably unique!
I would love to see a video of it in action on the water. 😊

I'm impressed with the general condition of your workshop, now i know for sure that my clutter will be productive of good results.
