    Greetings to all naval modelers.

In this section of the site (I hope I got it right this time) I want to include a 1:50 scale model that I invented many years ago.

It is not taken from kits or existing projects.
It was born as a toy to entertain my son but little by little I added slightly more accurate modeling elements.

I designed the hull but without using software, I drew it with pencil and paper. However, if you are not capable of designing a hull, the software is of little use.

It's not beautiful (let's even say a little ugly), I know this, because it wasn't born with a homogeneous project but is the result of ideas that came along little by little.

I'm fond of it and "every cockroach is beautiful for its mother" ahahahahahah.

However, it was very useful for me to do nautical tests and learn the rudiments of electronics on board RC models.

The motor is a 24 volt brushed motor but is normally powered by 6 volts. However, there is the possibility of bringing it up to 12, 18 and 24 volts. Up to 12 volts has been tested, above no.

It has no protruding fins or keels and can navigate in about 10cm of water.

Her name is FRANCESCA but I gave her to my son.

I will not include all the assembly phases but only some summary photos, so as not to bore you with an already finished model.
Of course, if anyone asks I will be available for any details.

I will only post four or five more messages related to the most interesting sailings, with very short descriptions of the places.

    Length on deck: 80 cm
length on the waterline when empty: 78 cm
length on the waterline at full load: 80 cm
    overall length: 112 cm
    maximum width: 21.2 cm
    full load draft
    with three steel bars
    on the eyelashes: 12.5 cm
    empty draft
with three steel bars on the eyelashes: 8.5 cm
    tree height: 41.5 cm
height from keel to deck: 17.5 cm
    total height: 59 cm
    weight without batteries: 5.42 kg
    weight with three batteries
lead acid VRLA AGM, 6V 4Ah: 6.27 kg

Correct RossM, the receiver is light, always better at the top.

Your video on the pond was delightful. ๐Ÿ˜‡๐Ÿ˜I could see it shifting from side to side, that is how you could see it was a problem. I have been known to attach the receiver to the underside of the hatch to protect it from water

    Good evening everyone.

This is the latest video of the schooner brig Francesca.
It is not the last in chronological order, rather one of the first.
In fact, she still didn't have any measures to waterproof the deck.

Navigation is in the very small lake of Villa Ada, one of Rome's public parks.
The peculiarity of this video is that I put a camera on board to take some shots from the ship itself.
The camera was not a micro camera but a small regular camera. It was very heavy and when the ship took a crosswind this additional weight on the deck caused the whole vessel to list too much.
After sailing for a while (and in the meantime I took on water without knowing it) with this camera I realized that the ship was behaving strangely and the freeboard had decreased a lot.
When I finished sailing and put it back on dry land, I found that there was about a liter of water in the hold.
Luckily it didn't damage any electrical components.
At that time I had a different construction philosophy (which I have totally changed).
Electrical components all at the top (also the motor is protected inside a plastic box).
In fact, initially I had studied a transmission system that absolutely did not prevent water from entering the pipe itself.
It worked but I changed it anyway because there were too many disadvantages including excessive noise.

21 degrees certainly doesn't seem right ๐Ÿ˜•. Currently in Somerset/ UK are a balmy 6 degrees . Certainly a lot better than -4 the other day, not ideal when trying to prep a double decker ๐Ÿš for it's mot and the leather cleaner was freezing on the seats ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ . Plus side is it's getting closer to April when hopefully I'll be able to drive them again and not clean them ๐Ÿ™ƒ

    Thanks so much Doogle.

Today is a good Sunday even if a little cold but the temperatures are right for January.

What wasn't normal was the 21 degrees Celsius of the previous days.

    Happy Sunday everyone.

This is the third video montage made many years ago.

    Navigation is at Lake Paterno.

I hope you enjoy the images.

    LAKE PATERNO

Lake Paterno or Cotilia is a lake in the province of Rieti, in Lazio, located in the San Vittorino plain. Very well known in ancient times, it was a sacred place for many Italic peoples, so much so that Varro called it "the navel of Italy".

Lake Paterno is a basin of karst origin, originating from a sinkhole of the ground (sinkhole, of which it represents one of the most exemplary cases). It has an oval shape and small dimensions (150x190 metres, diameter of 204 metres), but is very deep (almost 54 metres).
It is fed by an underground water source; the water drains through cracks in the limestone rock. The temperature at the bottom is 6 ยฐC, almost constant throughout the year; the one on the surface is usually warmer depending on the season.

It is located at 600 m above sea level. upstream from the lake and about 5 km from the town of Ponte Alto.

The lake is suitable for bathing, fishing and scuba diving.

The remains of a majestic villa dating back to the 1st century dominate the body of water. B.C. probably to be identified with that of the Flavian emperors (so-called Villa di Tito); a short distance away are the remains of the Aquae Cutiliae thermal plant.

    surface area = 0.03 kmยฒ

    length: 190 m
    width: 150 m
    depth: 54 m

    Greetings to all naval modelers.

This is the second navigation video.
I hope you enjoy the selected sequences in his time.
This time too I tried to cut out and assemble only the parts of navigation that were not too fast, but I leave the last word to you.

The navigation was done in a city lake inside a public park in Rome.
It is very busy and there is not the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere of a private association pond.
Here in Italy, the lakes of private associations dedicated to modeling are more unique than rare.
I saw that in England there are many clubs of this kind; certainly an enviable situation.
There are many advantages because you can stay safe from theft and damage and in the event of a breakdown you can count on many people.
The Italian naval modeling associations, as far as I know, hold rallies, events and even competitions but often do so in public lakes.

There isn't much to say about the Tor di Quinto lake, it will be one or two meters deep at most, it is 190 meters long at most.
The only advantage is that, being in the city, you don't have to travel far to reach it.

    Greetings to all modelers.

As I mentioned, I will only include some of the most significant navigations.

Some might be curious to see how it navigates.
I remember that it only goes by engine and that the sails are there only for aesthetics, they do not have any useful functions.

Navigation at 6 volts, if you use the stick well, is very realistic. Even turns can be done in a controlled manner and look real.
In the hands of teenagers and children things change but this is their fun.
When I did the video editing years ago, I cut the scenes that were less realistic and too fast.

This navigation was done on Lake Vico, a beautiful natural lake which I will describe better below for those interested.

Limited to the navigation of the model, it can be said that the side we chose was characterized on the surface by many floating aquatic plants. These got stuck in the propeller.
The ship was still going but I noticed that she was being held back by something.
Despite the effort, nothing ever overheated and in any case once or twice she returned to shore for a brief cleaning of the propeller.

    VICO LAKE

Lake Vico (from the Latin Lacus Ciminus or Lacus Ciminius) is a lake of volcanic origin in central Italy located in the province of Viterbo. It boasts the highest altitude record among the large Italian lakes, with its 507 m above sea level. It is surrounded by the mountainous complex of the Cimini mountains; in particular, the lake is surrounded by Mount Fogliano (965 m) and Mount Venere (851 m).

    Due to its peculiar natural characteristics, the Vicano district is included among the areas of particular naturalistic value in Lazio and among the biotopes of significant naturalistic interest in Italy. Since 1982 it has been a protected area belonging to the Lake Vico Nature Reserve and for this reason it has been saved from building speculation. There are very few homes that overlook the lake;

According to legend, the lake originated from the iron rod that Hercules stuck in the ground to demonstrate his strength, challenging the local inhabitants; no one could remove it. When the hero did so, a huge jet of water gushed out and filled the valley, thus forming the lake.

Lake Vico is actually the result of a series of long and powerful phases of volcanic activity, which occurred between 400,000 and 93,000 years ago and emerged from different centers of origin: for this reason its caldera has a "polycentric" shape. The lake originated after the cessation of the volcanic phases, around 90,000 years ago following the filling of the volcanic caldera by the rains and snows of the glacial phases.

The lake is suitable for swimming and is rich in fauna and flora.

    surface area: 12.93 km2

    maximum depth: 48.5 m

After taking up many of my wife's vital spaces for ship model building, it was a must to name it after her.
