Non-Classic Fairey Builds

About this boat

These come from the era of classic boats, including the 1960s and 70s and were timber hulled. The Fisherman 27 could be called a classic as it was a popular boat but I'm talking here in the context of models. I don't know of any of these being built and there certainly weren't any drawings or kits produced unlike with the classics like the Huntsman 31 etc.

These builds were borne out of my desire to build something different but still Faireys and were inspired by photographs found in books, which in the case of the River Cruiser, a small B&W photograph being my only source of information though with the hull being based on the Huntress made things easier.

Yes, you are right Bob, they wouldn't look that much different on the water. But once I've made more progress on existing and planned builds I quite fancy building a little Christina.

The Huntress hull is fairly quick and simple to build using the upside down, building off the deck technique so it's one to consider.

All of these "just mentioned" boats should retain the superb Fairey Marine handling due to the use of the same (or very similar) deep-vee hull shapes.

As far as model power boats go, they give some alternative cabin shapes for us to try, but most would not be recognisable as being significantly different to the better known originals when seen on the water from a distance.....apart from the Campbell models with the sloped front windscreens.

No, I hadn't seen them. They are produced by Campbell Boats, an American company with I think no link with Bruce Campbell of Christina fame.

I do quite like the look of some of the Bruce Campbell Christina's 23/25s using the Huntress hull. The link with Fairey, Dell Quay and Campbell are the Ray Hunt designed deep vee hulls with many of them being produced by Fairey for Dell Quay and Campbell along with their own models.

I did find these pictures of different Campbell boats when I was looking for the Christina.

These models looks to be slightly longer (?) and have more slope on the front windscreen which I quite like.

    Campbell Christina,

...another boat that I didn't know anything about, and there are less pictures that I could find of this type.

Again, it has some passing similarity to the Fairey Marine models that we are much better known to us.

It would appear to be another boat from the early 1960's that was available in 23ft and 25 ft lengths.

    Dell Quay Ranger.

I didn't know what a Dell Quay Ranger boat looked like as I have never heard of one before - so I looked it up and found some pictures of it.

It certainly looks quite a bit like the Fairy Marine Classic Power Boats that we like so much and I noticed that some of the pictures were from the Fairey Owners Club - so I assume that it has some connection?

The boats look to be from the early 1960's and the ones that I have read about are 27ft long.

    Hi Madwelshamn
I totally agree with you regarding the DellQuay Ranger.
What a differnce it also has a nice looking superstructure to her.
Although the Huntsman and Huntress look more as sports boats and racers
and they were built for that, the Ranger looks more of a Day Cruiser.
It has the rear outdrive that is a nice addition to the hull.
I am NOW waiting to see who is going to be the first to build one of these.
    Lest see !!👍👍🚤🚤

I've thought for a fair while now, that the Bulldog would make quite a nice model.
Yes it's just a traditional motorboat/work boat, but I do quite like it's design.

Also, a Bruce Campbell Christina, or Dell Quay Ranger would be quite a nice addition to the fleet, but still maintaining the Fairey theme 🤔
The Ranger being the favourite of those two for me.
Funnily enough, there has been a 1:1 Christina near me advertised on Fakebook marketplace recently. I'm not tempted by it though!

I like unusual models like your Fisherman build Chris - it looks good 👍

Making your own sails will test your skills with the sewing machine. 🤣

Fisherman 27 - This is a motor sailer and was prompted by wanting to build something with sails. The build is only in the early stages at the moment but I'm really enjoying it.

Faun 16 - This was a small river and lake cruiser and used the hull from the Falcon sailing dinghy. Fairey produced them for use with an outboard motor but some owners converted them to inboard and it was a nice example of one of those that inspired my build.

River Cruiser - As said, this was based on the Huntress hull so was the same length at 23 feet. The freeboard was increased to give more space inside the boat for cruising.

Only the prototype was built which then disappeared.
