This is a small steam yacht (albeit electrically driven) based on Vic Smeed's Silver Mist Hull. The boat isn't complete yet but getting there. I just started working on her again getting the railings built. It'll be some time before I can get her tested (Covid 19 lockdown) but hope to ballast her in the plasterer's bath I bought for the purpose- I no longer have a bath in the house after re-fitting the bathroom with shower only. She has a steam whistle sound system and a MBB mist unit which seem to work well.

What a nice looking traditional boat. Being a relative newcomer to the hobby, I do not know all of Vic Smeed's designs, but this I like. Apart from that, a very well built model. Full marks.

    Cheers, Nerys

Vic Smeed and Martin Evans were always at the forefront of Modelling. Vic Smeed not only designed boats but planes as well. Martin Evans was fully employed by MAP as a producing Model Engineer. Martin has plenty of designs for steam locmotives and engines that fit into the boats and vice versa. When I started R/C I built quite a few of his designs. Even their books today are an inspiration.πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰
When I emigrated to Sout Africa in 1972 a lot of the annual went to the boy scouts but I still have 3 books by Martin Evans Invaluable to a model Engineer but like all things sadly out of print😭😭😭

Thank you Nerys, for your kind comments. Only the hull of this boat was designed by Vic Smeed and I changed the bow profile to look more like a traditional clipper bow. I designed the upper works. I have built several of Vic's designs and they can be seen in my harbour.
For those of us of a certain age who have been interested in (should I say afflicted by?) model boats since boyhood, Vic Smeed is a very important name. He was editor of Model Maker and then Model Boats for many years and was responsible for many lovely designs, boats and aircraft.
    Kind regards,
    Ian

Ian, I agree, I still have Vic Smeed's Model Boats and Power Model Boats by my bedside and refer to them regularly.

I really like your adaptation of the Smeed hull to a steam launch. It is really a great project! I also have a Silvermist plan. I will have to dig it out and look at it from your perspective.

Thanks for that. It sort of works! I wanted a small steam yacht but couldn't find lines, adding to which, I had the hull going spare. I changed the profile of the bow by simply adding a 6mm ply piece to make it a clipper how and then trail boards. It couldn't be described as a true scale model but it brings me a lot of satisfaction. I have built a Silver Mist as designed but also at 36''. It's in the Harbour.
I hope you do decide to do something with the Silver Mist design. Give me a shout if you decide to proceed and need more info.

There's something about the traditional steam yacht, the faded grandeur of former days. I remember, must have been in the '50's one, the GlenStrathalan being presented to the Training Ship Arethusa, the thought being that she could give the boys seagoing experience, but unfortunately, she was coal fired and was far too expensive to use. She looked nice, moored alongside though.

    Cheers, Nerys

    Hi Nerys,
I have just been looking through your boats and some lovely stuff there. I agree about the faded grandeur which is why, if you look closely, you can see the mahogany has been treated with Gilder's paste in verdigris, to give the impression of manky woodwork that needs a bit of tlc! I might find it difficult to extend that treatment to the hull😊. I still have to put Minnow in the water and fear I may not have watched the weight of those upperworks closely enough. I know from my other Silver Mist that she weighs about 15lb so I might be alright.
I must say, I enjoy reading of your exploits and experiences. You should write a book- or maybe you have.
    Regards,
    Ian
