๐Ÿ“ Graupner Glasgow paddle tug - paddle rotation speed?

I am currently recovering a second hand kit which had been just started by the previous owner. Since the graupner motors are no longer available I need to work out what I require to achieve the correct paddle rotation speed for this model. I can access geared motors and suitable nylon gears etc to effect almost any reduction ratio. My problem is that I require to know what the paddle rotation speed should be so that I can then calculate the various options that might be suitable. Would anyone be able to provide, at least, an estimate of the recommended paddle rotation speed for this boat. I intend using the graupner paddles supplied with the kit as Clyde Model Boats appear to be having problems in obtaining some parts for their excellent alternative units.

I believe the father retired one or two years ago. Apparently he ran the webside of the business and it seemed to go smoothly. With his retirement the web business has suffered as the sons/partners? do not seem either interested or capable of managing the system. it may well be that the shop itself is still satisfactorily run but I am far removed from that end of the Country.

I should have added that approaching the magazines re the adverts would also probably be a waste of time unless they were to be inundated with complaints. I have had experience of a retailer who published, in their advert, both an e-mail address and a telephone number for complaints and other queries. They never responded to e-mails despite proof of the mail having been received. The telephone number "did not accept incoming calls". Contacting the ASA resulted in the reponse that the advert was OK. it was a service problem and was outwith their remit despite the fact that incorrect and/or misleading statements were made re the contact information. Magazines are not going to stop carrying an advert unless there is a major outcry and even then we are again up against, in most instances, the "big boys" who don,t give a t*** about you and me.

Unfortunately Trading Standards are no longer what they once were. You need to first contact the local Citizens Advice Bureau and ask them for advice. You then have to go through the usual rigmarole of sending a recorded delivery letter to the offending retailer and give them a chance to redress the situation. if this does not work the next step is to ask either your bank or the card issuer if they will do a charge back. if this does not work then the next step would be the small claims court or the sheriff court in Scotland. The CAB claim to pass on the information to Trading Standards but the latter will not get involved unless there is a plethora of complaints against the retailer. Total waste of space these days like so many so called standards and enforcement agencies. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

My experiences of Westbourne are that they are very good at charging your card as soon as the order is placed regardless of whether or not they have stock in place. Any attempts to contact them re non supply of goods either result in beng lied to re the items or more often all communication is totally ignored. I would certainly not recommend anyone attempting to do business with this company. Any reputable company will not charge your card until the items are dispatched.

The fitting kit for the dusseldorf consists mainly of pulleys, thread, tension springs and other bits and pieces to operate the monitors. Generally the forward monitor is operated seperately by two servos - one for rotation and the other for elevation. The rear two monitors on the cabin are arranged in the kit form to be operated in tandem by a further two servos. it then requires a 6 volt pump bought seperately or 12 if you use 12 volt electrics to feed all three units. I do have a Dusseldorf but have no intention of selling at present. You can fit quite a lot such as all lighting operating as in full size boat, radar scanner, scanning searchlight, towhook, dinghy crane, etc.,etc. Very unlikely that you would be able to find a fittings kit these days but if you can obtain a set of the plans there is sufficient detail from which to work out the servo layouts and pulley sizes required.

Check out the "Clyde Model Boats" website.

He does a hull and paddle wheels to match plus a plan.

Looks as though he is developing a semi-kit which would presumably include the materials required but I have no idea how long it might be before that becomes available -

๐Ÿ“ Left Hand props and shafts

Most props whether left or right handed come with a right handed thread. The one company which does provide props with right and left hand threads is Graupner but only on some of the types and sizes - the thread direction is coupled to the handing of the prop so that they tighten on the shaft when running forwards. Does mean that you need to source a left handed thread on the prop shaft and I have only found one german shop/manufacturer which is able to supply M4 Left hand threaded shafts.
As said by other posters easier to stick with right hand threaded and use a locknut.
The props should rotate in opposite directions and the direction of rotation does create different effects on full size boats - e.g. raising or lowering the bow when running.
Outwards turning props (top of prop) are also supposed to improve manoeuvering and are generally used on tugs and the like. There is also supposed to be an effect on achievable speed but you would need to search for the relevant article on the web.
When the prop turns the boat tends to try and rotate in the opposite direction due to torque. Having the props on twin prop boats rotate in different directions cancels out this effect.
The pilot on single prop boats is normally positioned either right or left to help counteract this effect - there are some very interesting articles to be found on the web referencing these subjects with respect to full size boats

    Thanks for your response.

I mailed a recorded delivery letter of cancellation under the consumer contratct regulations and this was received by them on 19th Novemeber.
I have proof of delivery for that letter but no response or refund has been forthcoming.
My only resort would be to pursue a claim through the Scottish Sheriff Courts but the costs and time required are unwarranted in my opinion due to the sum involved being relatively small.
Just thought that a heads up to other buyers would be a good idea as they do not appear to be particularly consumer orientated when problems arise in the supply of items ordered.

I would advise being extremely careful when orering online from this company. My first order has still not been fulfilled and I unfortunately paid in full at the time of ordering. Their contact telephone number does not accept incoming calls. All e-mails, although receipted as delivered go unanswered. Attempts to cancel the order and obtain a refund under the distance selling regulations have also gone completely Ignored. They appear to be slow in delivering but, should anything go wrong, my experience is that they simply do not respond to any communications whatsoever. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

If all else fails then try e-mailing Dumas in the States. They were extremely helpful when I required some replacement parts for a kit that I bought at auction.

I have dealt with them previously and did not have a problem. This time however I am unable to obtain any information that I have requested by e-mail such as date of dispatch and carrier so that I may check at my end to determine whether the items have gone missing or are not yet in the mail. Second order has arrived but the first order placed several days earlier has not. The only information that they have so far provided was that they were both packed on the same day so one would assume that they were probably also dispatched at the same time

I have to say that I do deal with several companies who are really geared to dealing with bulk orders but in every case I have found them extremely helpful and very efficient at meeting my requests.

It is just the lack of communication from this supplier that is frustrating me - especially the fact that their telephone contact number does not accept incoming calls. Exactly what is it meant to do then??

Is anyone else having problems whith this supplier? I am awaiting an order which may have been mislaid In the mail. All efforts to contact them are proving fruitless. They do not answer e-mails and the telephone number given on their website does not accept Incoming calls. The latter appears particularly pointless as It Is of no use whatsoever.
