Not done a 'blog' But my Solent also started off as an 'Aerokits' kit back in '79 or 80'. it was always an ever changing model and has ended up as true scale as I can get it using the drawings I bought from RNLI drawing office in Poole a few years ago. I gave it a fake number 48-021 to cover any mistakes if compared to a real life boat. I've sailed it across the Blackwater estuary in Essex from Bradwell and I can honestly say it was the first craft in Burnham-on-Crouch Marina when they let the water through in (about) '88 or '89. After donating my old home made RCME 27meg system to the Mid Thames Boat Club museum at Beale park in 2000 I sailed it at Beale park quite a lot with my new 'Fleet'gear- trouble was MTBC always had their 'lifeboat days' when we were on holiday and the lifeboat days fizzled out. So now it languishes in the garage.. Did meet some nice people from Watermead club at Beale a couple of weeks ago... So may get it there.

Looks good, Did you get the RNLI yard drawings (as I did) to get it as accurate ? I made all my doors and hatches etc. out of fifteen thou' brass and it paid off.
Great Model..

π Paint spraying problem - can anybody help?

The main problem spraying metallics is that the 'flakes' of aluminium that give the 'look' have to lie all in the same plane as the paint hardens, otherwise you'll get the varied sheen density. Not an easy one to fix. I'd stick with the airbrush as that gives more control of the 'wet edge' during spraying. Best of luck whatever!!

Somehow I find brass is easiest to work with for doors (and most fittings/covers etc) then you can use small B.A fasteners to save faking nuts and bolts. 12 and 14BA work well in 1/12 scale. Thanks for an interesting set of pics - be good to see it when all finished.

Maybe you may elicit some posts from Fireboat fans? I thought there were sections for all interests associated with Lifesaving craft?
The 'Aerokits' link is really an Important nod to English Modelmaking history...

I just scratchbuilt my radar from the RNLI shipyard drawings... 20thou' brass shim the same as most of my solents parts such as doors, hatches etc.
Brass shim is easy to work with and solder....
