Hi all, I am new to this and not sure if I am doing it correctly but I am sure someone will speak up and advise me otherwise.
After seeing the beautiful water taxis in Venice, after a trip there, I decided to build a RC model. I had difficulty in locating plans but finally managed and have now been 12 months into the build. I have attached a few shots from the start to where I am now. If anybody is interested make contact so I can answer questions etc. After much research I amanged to locate a stern leg that is scale size. I have used West epoxy system throughout and for the glue I mixed mahogany sanding dust to the epoxy to thicken and of course blends with the timber colour. It is fully coated with the same epoxy and sanded with 2000 grit wet and dry, then polished with brasso and finally car polish. I didn't want to introduce any oil based varnish etc. More shots to follow as I progress. Cheers and keep modelling. Ian -😉 New Zealand

I too mix sawdust with epoxy resin, did that back when I worked on full sized boats.

Hi, Yes using the sanding dust keeps the same tone throughout. Re the Silverdale Blokes Shed - Suggest you contact the Warkworth shed and check as I went to a meeting at the Warkworth shed recently and I am sure the Silverdale shed will be opening soon if not now. Hi Ian, nice to see a fellow Aucklander on the site👍 Excellent job on the model,- looks pretty solid. I was going to ask where you bought the resorcinol glue, and then I saw you'd done the same as I did with repairs and filling on my 15ft day sailer, and mixed mahogany dust with the west epoxy. Works really well. I save all my mahogany and other wood sanding dust for the same reason. Looks much better than opaque epoxy.
Resorcinol glue used to be good for that on mahogany, but it's hard to find now, and expensive. It's much nicer than epoxy for darker woods I think. There is a big new mens' shed here in Silverdale, but it doesn't seem to be open yet. It's been there for more than a year, but I've never seen anyone there. Not sure what the problem is, - maybe the council. JB ▲

Thanks for your comment and I would be happy to help anybody, just ask the question. A follower mentioned that I have a lot of machinery in my shop, well the truth is I am a member of the blokes shed here in Settlers Lifestyle Retirement Village here in Auckland and yes we do have a lot of good gear although mainly geared to wood work other than my small Myford engineers lathe. There are only about 5 guys who come down and work building all sorts of things, but not models. Will post more info on my Venice water taxi build soon. Cheers all and happy modelling.👍 ▲

Hi All. Thanks for all the nice comments. I am a marine engineer trade served machinist and built a few models plus full size boats up to 9.5 metre yacht so I have a bit of hands on knowledge.

Hi Ian, welcome from me.
From the photos I've seen I can say you're off to a great start. I also see (again from the images you posted) that you have a lot of equipment and a lot of space to be able to build scale ships. You sound more like a pro than a novice. The model is selling very well, it seems nice big, how long is it? Regarding advice and suggestions in this forum you will have all the help you need. Please take lots of photos and especially videos when you test in the water. I will follow your work with great pleasure. P.S. If you don't understand well don't worry, it's my fault, I use Google translator. ▲
