Here are a couple of shots of my โ€œOrcaโ€ as it nears the point of sealing, painting and weathering. I started this about 6 weeks ago and itโ€™s been built using the plans from Pat Tritle in the USA. Iโ€™m sorry that Iโ€™ve not taken many shots of the build as up to a point, most of it was covered by a build thread listed by Pat a few years ago on another forum. I shall include more shots now that we are at the paining and detailing phase as this is were I plan to go overboard!

I used the plans, mainly for the templates of the formers ect and deviated on wood choice where I felt that harder woods would be better than balsa. The hull was glass clothed and resin finished. Most of the superstructure was bass wood, obechi, some mahogany and even some pine! Whilst Pat included some basic detailing on the plans, I have done as much research as possible on the real thing, have watched โ€œJawsโ€ several times (not hard as itโ€™s still my fave film!), I shall try and replicate as much detail as possible!

Radio choice is a simple 540 sized brushed motor, 45mm brass prop, 15amp Mtroniks ESC, Hobbyking servo for rudder and 6 cell car type Nimh battery. Iโ€™ll take photos of the internals at some point.

Iโ€™ve built it in such a way that all major parts come apart for painting, rear deck, cabin roof and rear wall, front hatch, flying bridge, mast, all brass railings ect.

All thatโ€™s left to do before painting commences is the final details on the mast, a final shot of her completed before painting and then onwards! All the deck details, I.e, shark cage, O2 bottles, gaffs, spears, chum buckets, barrels, fighting chair, Rod n reel, Shark jaw on flying bridge, and any other details will all be scratch built. About the only commercial items going on are the post holes, nav light boards and search light, My only other issue now is trying and so far failing to find 3 suitable figures to represent Quint, Hope and Brody in 1:14 scale, anyone know of a solution please le5 me know?

Hi there, if you search Pat Tritle on google, you will find his website from USA weโ€™re he sells plans for boats and planes that he has designed. The plans for Orca are on 4 sheets and have all the detail you need to build this. Here is his website address www.patscustom-models.com

    Hi:
I've always wanted to build this iconic boat !! ... the biggest drawback is that there are few photos to take references and I couldn't find any plans.
Where can I get that blueprints? Thanks for the info

Thereโ€™s a wealth of interesting reading, videos ect on the history of Orca, what happened to her and the second boat post filming, sadly the original Orca was lost to rot but the second survives in the Universal back lot tour I believe?

What a great job you have done - all you need is Jaws himself , the Police Chief and Quint (sorry cant remember Chiefs name). Sure you will make just as good a job of painting - although as Martin says a pity to cover up such nice woodwork.

Quite an interesting story if you read about making the movie - Spielberg had a lot of alterations done to Orca beforehand - some to make it easier to film like enlarged windows.

Looking forward to seeing Orca on the water.

Looking good!, bit of a coincidence, I was just looking at a number of these on various sites about 2 weeks ago and there were some amazingly detailed models made. Looks like yours might be heading that way judging by the excellent work already.

You have done a fantastic job on "Orca" that wood looks so good that it would be a shame to paint over it.

Looking forward to seeing more updates.

Some careful mixing of Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics has seen me come up with a red and grey\green Iโ€™m happy with. Looking at reference photos, itโ€™s hard to pin down exactly the colours, but Iโ€™m happy they are close enough. The airbrush has been a busy boy today! Of course everything will change once Iโ€™ve varnished and started the weathering, the โ€œOrcaโ€ was a scruffy boat to say the least!

Primed with Halfords grey primer for pre-shading, then a little white primer before airbrushing the pale grey/green. All remaining colours were hand painted without masking except the circle of black were the shark jaw will be. Tomorrow Iโ€™ll weather the flying bridge and start adding all the detail parts.

Here is the completed and weathered flying bridge. Weathering with washes, powders and a little dry brushing where needed. Life rings are wooden rings from HK, about 50p For a dozen posted, Iโ€™ve got many sizes in stock at that price!

The last thing on the bridge to be completed is to paint the echo sounding fish finder made from plasticard. In fact everything is scratch built except the helm, Horn, searchlight and nav light boards as I had some left over from another project.

A little work on the roof and rear wall of main cabin today adding the base colours. Exhaust painted and rusted, and fish finder painted (thanks Doug for the screen shot, printed and installed with an epoxy window!).

Still looking very bright and factory fresh, but all that will calm down with some serious weathering! Thatโ€™s it for a few days as I start nights tonight.

The ropes are just model boat rope wound around 1/16โ€ brass wire Hoops the had a thin strip of plasticard glued to the outer edge prior, easy peasy. I like to scratch build as much as possible, saves money as the scrap box is the source for most things, and itโ€™s a lot more satisfying than buying an off the shelf product.

My army job for the past 15 years has been in the Forces Guarding Branch, we work a similar shift pattern to the Fire Service, 4 on 4 off

Ha ha, I shall get a nice 6 week break between leaving the Army and moving to the new job which is only part time. Iโ€™ve accrued some leave and get a month off at the end with what we call termination leave. As for the adverts in the 50โ€™s and 60โ€™s, Iโ€™m old, but not that old ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ. The Falklands conflict was my influence to join up, the rest is history! ๐Ÿ‘

Peter, many thanks for your kind words. Itโ€™s been a long old stint, Iโ€™ve never had any other job or to be exact, way of life. But Iโ€™m actually moving out of service life into a job on an American airforce base, so I hope the transition will be an easy one, especially as I get to see fast jets every shift!

What I like best is that you are capturing the essence of the boat - as if you could step aboard and meet Brody & Quint (before Jaws visited) - its a great job you are making of it.

That's a long time to have been in the services - but straight into another job ? Surely you need a break ?

Been reading the early Model Makers again - saw the army was actively recruiting through the magazine in the 50's and early 60's - did you ever see any of those adverts ?

Looking forward to seeing her completed.

Hereโ€™s a couple of shots of an hours Work before shift making some of the details to go on. Iโ€™ve made the first cage side, 3 more to go! The ballast tanks for the cage, the 2 chum buckets (pvc pipe from B&Q ยฃ2.99 for 2 meters!) and the 2 scuba bottles that Hooper used in the last scene of the film. So, this morning before bed after night shift I painted the Scuba tank bottles finished with yellow and blue trimline. After a kip, I made Quints fishing reel based on An image I found of an Abu Garcia shark reel, all made from various bits of scrap plastic rod, card and strip. Quite please with the outcome if Iโ€™m honest! It will of course have real fishing line added once painted.

Today before bed the reel got its coat of paint and varnish. Reel placed next to a 10p piece to show scale. No wonder I wear glasses ๐Ÿ˜‚

This afternoon started the first of those famous yellow barrels, which are simply 36mm pvc pipe from B&Q, balsa ends and plastic strip. Spun up in the drill and sanded to shape.

Working with small bits is fiddly granted, but Iโ€™m lucky to have quite small but steady hands, however my glasses prescription has changed many times over the years as a consequence! To avoid losing tiny bits amongst the dust and stuff on the floor, I use a small towel on my work bench, anything that slips my grasp falls onto the towel instead of disappearing onto the floor! Of course I would be in a world of grief if I was to use one of โ€œthe long haired sergeant majorsโ€ best bath towels! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

A little more done today prior to and post kip. Fishing rod made from tapered dowel, brass rings, whipping like a real rod, real fishing line and hook!

Especially pleased with the barrel, primed, airbrushed tamiya yellow then washes, dry brushing ect to dirty it up before adding the ropes. 2-3 more to make!

Iโ€™m trying to keep the whole build to under a ยฃ100 from start to finish. I spent about ยฃ30 on wood, same for the motor/propshaft/prop (already had esc, coupling, servo, battery and RX) and about ยฃ40 On a few commercial items and a couple of paints I didnโ€™t already have. The rest has been made from the years of accumulated various wood, metal and scrap boxes I have!
