Hi all dived into youtube on the control of two speed controllers. found some good tutorials on how to programme my transmitter to enable the use of both gimbal sticks to control both motors to one stick. ( throttle). then to control each motor on the other stick individually to be able to help the rudders turn the boat.

Ah good Jim, I'm still waiting for my stuff to arrive, I'm using the Mtronics "w tail" mixer and 2 mtronics Viper 20A esc's along with 2 rudders. Allegedly this is a simple set up (Hah - we'll see ๐Ÿ˜Š) and like you described in your set up this will have motors on one stick and steering on the other, however, with the w tail set up the motor on the inside of the turn will slow and this should improve turning, unfortunately it looks like a couple of weeks before I'll be able to test anything. I'd be interested in hearing how your system works

Hi bill hope it is simple to set up. two of the tutorial you tube vids do show you how to set the ESC so that when you increase the speed to one prop it decreases the speed to the other IE which ever is the inside prop on the turn the speed / revolutions decrease.
the w,tail mix is done by the transmitter anyways it looks like we will have a go our ways and compare notes at a later date.

If you already have a rudder/motor mixer on board (or even not) then why mess with two sticks for throttle and rudder?
I always have gas and rudder on one stick, usually the right stick.
Works just as well on single shaft boats or twin jobs with or without mixer.
Then I can navigate with one thumb and have a hand free for special functions, or a Bierkrug/wineglass! ๐Ÿ˜‰ (I sail adjacent to a Biergarten๐Ÿ˜)

Hmm! Increasing the speed to 'one prop' means you must have so called 'Tank steering', i.e. one control per ESC/prop. Fine for tanks but a pain in the derriรจre for boats!๐Ÿค”
Same comment as above for rudder and throttle on separate sticks applies.
Why restrict your options in this way?
But if that's the way you want to go then I guess you can dispense with the rudder.

    Hi Doug,
On my Gato submarine i had a system that i had port motor on the left stick, starboard motor on the right stick.
And at the flick of a switch both motors would be operated by the left stick only.

Perhaps that is the sort of system he is talking about.

    Hi Doug,

I like the idea of having speed and turning on the one stick, do you have anymore info on how to do that, I just assumed that they would be separate, unfortunately I'm sure that having a civilised refreshment in a public place isn't allowed in Ireland-I'll have to check into that. I should receive my shipment of goodies at the start of the week so I'll have to get cracking and have a boat ready for it ๐Ÿ˜Š. I dug out my flower class hull last night but I want to do something different with it, but I'll wait (or at least try to) until I get my tug done.

    Hi Bill,
It really couldn't be any easier!
The right stick controls Channels 1 and 2: Ch 1 is Left/Right = Rudder, Ch 2 is Up/Down = Throttle. So just plug your rudder servo into Ch1 and ESC (or 2 ESCs via Y cable) into Ch2 and off you go.๐Ÿ˜Š If you are left handed use channels 3 & 4๐Ÿ˜‰

Biergartens were specially created here for convivial imbibing in a public place.๐Ÿ˜
I'm just lucky that there is a Biergarten, and a very fine restaurant, built on the banks of my local sailing lake; Ostpark Munich.
I still have fond memories of 'convivial imbibing' in Dublin and Cork๐Ÿ‘
If you want to mix rudder and the dual ESCs you can either use a mix function on your TX (don't know yours so can't say much there) or use a mixer board in the boat or even the dual ESC from Action Electronics with a built in rudder mixer, type P94 or P94L from Component Shop. I believe that they now do versions for both brushed and brushless motors๐Ÿ˜Š
    https://www.componentshop.co.uk/action-electronics/esc.html
It never ever occurred to me to mess about with two sticks for throttles.
Not even with my 1.35m destroyer, she turns quite sharpish as it is, with a very realistic and heart stopping outward heel!๐Ÿ˜ฎ

    Hi Doug,

Many thanks, doesn't sound to hard, I'll have a play about next week when everything arrives ๐Ÿ˜Š.
Yep, the european way of doing things is still to catch on here, beer gardens are usually the backyard of the pub, but saying that they are fun places.
I had a look at the P94 I liked that, it had very easy to understand instructions and everything in one compact unit, but I went with Mtronics instead (10 quid cheaper) plus I wanted to cut down on the number of suppliers.

    Hi Martin,
Yep, I remember you mentioning that.
I wondered at the time; Why?
What does the right stick then do?
Most folks are scratching about trying to find RC sets with the most channels/functions (however you want to look at it) for the least spondulicks. Yet others split functions between two controls (channels) when one will do!
Never tried twin throttle controls (never occurred to me to) but I imagine that it demands more intensive concentration (= stress) and removes any possibility of operating any other functions simultaneously, which I can easily do.
What was the advantage of your set up on the Gato?
I'm sure that the Tank Steering fans will now jump on me but I'm willing to learn!

Looking forward to the results report.
Doesn't the mTroniks solution involve three separate modules though, as opposed to the Action one? S'pose some folks might then think 'all eggs in one basket'๐Ÿ™„
At least it makes the installation easier.
Whatever, have fun. That's the whole point of the exercise!๐Ÿ˜Š

sorry Doug seemed to make sense at the time left stick throttle. is main speed control. the right stick is programmed to sense the degree of turn on the rudder and adjust the amount of thrust to each prop.
never done this before so it may well be a waste of time. nothing like hitting your bonce to learn where the low beams are.

    Hi Jim,
" the right stick is programmed to sense the degree of turn on the rudder and adjust the amount of thrust to each prop. "
Don't quite see how a 'stick' senses anything, but I'm willing to learn.๐Ÿ˜‰ I guess it refers to a mix function in your TX?
For my models, most of which are with two or more (max 4) shafts, and especially for first timers with twin setups, I try to apply the KISS principle. Keep It Stupid and Simple!

I also don't like wasting controls on the TX. Hangover from the days when the more than two stick four function sets were crazily expensive. So we had to figure out ways to get more functions out of one control! Hence my home brew 4 function switch on one channel for my destroyer, ca 35 years ago. Still works๐Ÿ˜Š
Whatever Jim. If what you are doing feels good and works for you DO IT๐Ÿ‘
Just let us know how it goes please!

"nothing like hitting your bonce to learn where the low beams are. "
He he! Reminds me of a holiday in a superb hotel in Cinque Terre Italy.
We had a roof top room with balcony (more of an inset into the roof), velly nice, superb views. BUT! Inside the room the roof (ceiling) was sloping. So at 6' 2" who was it who kept bangin' 'is bonce?๐Ÿค•
Happy building, keep us informed of progress๐Ÿ‘
    Cheers, Doug ๐Ÿ˜Ž
Attached is a drawing of various wiring arrangements for twin motor setups.
Ignore the TX stick drawings on the left. Just find out which two channels your right stick controls and use those๐Ÿ‘ Left stick for Southpaws! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Hi Doug,

If i remember correctly it was an old Fleetscale 40Mhz set.
And also i think that when you flicked the switch both motors were linked to the left stick and the right stick only controlled the rudder and nothing else.

What the advantages of this is still a Mystery to me as i no longer have this equipment.

you are not wrong my friend fell in love with her at the southern counties model show in 2018 a chap had the great big one but just as a static model she looked as if you could swim in the clear coats of varnish. Mines the 85 cm version little sister but just as beautiful.
been on line quite a bit now researching the power system a lot of peeps are warning you off the amati set up (cheap and nasty was one discription) not strong enough very bad vibration through the motors to propshaft connections. I will copy the amati kit but beef up all the components.
anyways thank you for you time and effort Jimmy.

    Hi Jimmy,

If you thinking of upgrading the control gear I've been researching twin motor set-ups for my upcoming tug. For example Mtronics do a w-tail mixer for about 20 UK pounds from Howe's, this can be used with other manufacturers esc's (1 per motor) and gives you a lot of control options.
If you have a look through my build (still to get under way) we've talked about this type of set-up and I've received a lot of good advice. Although my build will be a tug and won't be as elegant as your aquarama the same principles will apply.
I can't comment on the vibration or quality issues, but hopefully some of the above will help.

I have had a look around but unfortunately have not found anything.
The only thing i can recommend is that you look at boat trailer images, download the image you like that make one to fit your model.
    Sorry i could not help.

    Hi Doug,
I did come across this when i was looking but i was mainly looking for plans/drawings that would give Jim something to work to.

    Hi Martin,
Model building involves a certain amount of ingenuity and lateral thinking.
Which you obviously have in abundance๐Ÿ‘
I'm sure that Jim can find plenty of info on these two search sites.
If he can build a Riva he can surely manage a simple space-frame trailer, given all these exploded drawings. Might even be a plan in one of the How To links.
Any plan would probably do, he'll have to adjust and scale to the dimensions of his model anyway. 'Make to fit' as you said.๐Ÿ‘
The odds of finding a 1 to 1 'how to' and plan of a trailer specifically for a 1/10 Riva must be hyper-astronomically long.
