    πŸ“ Refit Electronics complete

Completed the majority of upgrades for this refit. All new wiring, fuses, switches, new RX, new battery and setup, etc.

Rigging just about ready for a sea trial. I will use the existing sail setup just moved forward on the boat. Once it has sailed again I will determine if any new sail designs are necessary.

Here in California it's still too soon for me to venture out to the pond πŸ˜‚, so I will wait a few more weeks and see how it goes.

Great refit and I know what you mean by going out as things start to open up.Better to wait then to put yourself in danger.

πŸ“ Gaff Rigged Cutter - Refit

This is my Falmouth Gaff-Rigged Cutter that I built while on a little island in the Carribean back in '08/'09. It is a scratch built designed and built by myself. However it had one major problem - too much weather helm! So its been sitting in the garage gathering dust so it's time for a refit. That way I will have 5 to 6 boats to take to the pond...someday!! πŸ€—

While correcting the weather helm I will also do the following:
    1. Upgrade wiring to include new switch and fuses. 2. New battery type and system. 3. Replace outdated rx with a new technology version. 4. Replace motor esc. 5. Modify sails as required to fit adjusted mast location.

This will give me something to do πŸ˜‰ while glue and paint is curing on my US2M build that is ongoing πŸ˜‹.....

In my description, I forgot to mention that I already shifted the mast location forward 4". That is what is shown in the photo with the tape measure. #1 is the original location of the mast.

This mast relocation along with some rework of the sails and shifting some of the boat ballast aft should help with the weatherhelm. It's a bit of a challenge to get it right some times.

    Hi Joe,

I assumed that's what the taped marks were. Looking at your original rig, it does look as if if it's all a bit 'aft', but hard to guess from a picture. It's good to have a bit of weather helm but if you feel the need to move the mast four inches that does sound as if it was a bit extreme.
I'm sure we'll all learn something from your experiences and it's such pretty boat it'll be worth persisting with.
    Good luck with it.

    Rick,
    Thanks
We are in a heat wave here and my garage shop is too hot to work in on my US1Meter yacht; so this refit's rewiring and rigging can be done inside my house in my little studio space. Just keeping busy during my covid stay at home. ⚑

    Ian,
The weather helm was so bad that I had to hold the rudder full over to keep her straight!

How about a bigger jib and longer bowsprit?

    Nerys,
You read my mind, today I fitted a longer bowsprit and tonight I am redesigning the jibs. Thanks for the note!

It would be interesting Joe, to have a bit more info about your gaff cutter. For instance, where you got the lines, how big she is and what method you used to build her, weight, sail area, etc. I looked in your boat harbour and may have missed something.
It occurs to me that if you move the mast and increase the bowsprit and foresail area you might have changed too many things at once and go too far the other way! But then you probably know something I don't.😊
You have piqued our interest and we await developments.πŸ‘

Try googling 'Falmouth working boats', videos and pics. You will notice that their main boom ended more or less over the transom and they had guite long bowsprits. The Oyster boats were similar. There were also Falmouth Quay Punts which had a mizzen stepped on the transom (over to one side to avoid the tiller).

    Cheers, Nerys

    Ian,
So far I have just increased the bow sprit the same 4" distance that the mast moved forward. So the whole rig just moved forward. I am with you on doing too much too soon. Any changes to my current sail design will wait until after some sea trials.

My other upgrades are about done, just waiting to get a new switch I ordered.
